Should we imitate our competitor's blog network?
-
One of our competitors has built a little blog network, and I'm wondering if it's worth it for us to imitate it. Here's how they have it set up: They have domain.com, their e-commerce site, and blog.domain.com. They also have a half-dozen EMD blogs set up that all link to each other and to the e-commerce site, each one supplying content related to one niche of their busines (e.g. kitchenwidgets.com, widgetsforkids.com, etc.). It seems they've been doing this since December 2011.
In my opinion, the content on these EMD blogs is pretty low value. Sure enough, they have basically no inbound links from outside the blog network, and it's not getting shared socially. I'm having a hard time imagining a lot of long-tail searches that would bring in qualified shoppers, since they basically just write up 300-word long descriptions of photos.
Based on SEMrush data, it doesn't look like this approach is hurting them -- they didn't take a Penguin dive in April, for example. But how likely is it that this approach is helping them enough to justify the time they must spend writing (probably ~30-60m a day)? It would be trivial for the algo to determine that these are not natural links and completely devalue them. Would it not be better to consolidate that time into 2.5-5hrs a week spent researching and writing a valuable, link-worthy, long-tail-rich post for the main blog and then promoting it in hopes of attracting natural links?

Agreed, plus the answer that you marked as good really is the best answer for this question
-
Not sure to be honest with you. By clicking on a Good Answer it will automatically mark the question as Answered... But people other members still can and often do reply after its marked as answered.

Hmm, I didn't mean to mark this "Answered." Is there a way to undo that?

Here is a recent post from today, about shady linking:
http://www.seomoz.org/q/do-shady-backlinks-actually-damage-ranking
Your competitor decided to this themselves, instead of going out and buying links, they're doing it on a much smaller scale then if they were to purchase 1000s of links, so Google might not catch them right away, but its a matter of time until their rankings go down...
-
Yes, that is always the toughest thing to accomplish. What you need to explain to them is focusing on amazing content that will be beneficial to your customers is far more important than concentrating on getting links that are of no value and can get you in trouble with Google...
Getting a link to your site from a self made EWD domain with a blog that doesn't have any PR, PA, & DA is absolutely a waste of time and most likely will get you penalized...
There are numerous posts, whiteboard fridays on SEOMoz that talk about this. Here is some reference:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-noob-guide-to-link-building
http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links

and there are many more, just search for link building on seomoz.

That's my suspicion, Igor. Now to convince the higher-ups, who saw our competitor's strategy and decided that must be what we need to do in order to vault over them in the rankings.
-
Hello,
I think you should definitively start a blog just like your competitor however copying their tactic is not a good idea, as search engine spiders are very intelligent these days and can figure out linkspam. I assume that your competitor has all of his sites and blogs hosted probably under the same hosting account which would provide no value in regards to link value.
Your strategy of " to consolidate that time into 2.5-5hrs a week spent researching and writing a valuable, link-worthy, long-tail-rich post for the main blog and then promoting it in hopes of attracting natural links?"
Is much better and will pay off in the long run.
-
I should clarify that the EMD blogs are not attracting actual inbound links; their e-commerce site is doing fine.

Spam sites republish a article with 'money keyword' anchor text and causing a pentalty.. how to prevent.
About 6 weeks ago we had a DA50 / PA50 homepage site publish an article on our company which included a money keyword anchor text to our site.. Great. Once this happened we shot up the SERP for this term, but quite a few other spam / crawler sites seem to automatically republish everything this DA50 site publishes. This didnt seem to be a problem up until a couple of weeks ago, but now with the new penguin update it seems we have been slapped with a penalty, for having 20 sites all with the same article and anchor text. (the rest of our profile is pretty natural, so this is the main culprit for the penalty) Im now going to write to all the webmasters apart from the DA50 site, and ask them to remove the article, failing that ill have to disavow them. For future reference what is there a way of avoiding this issue of spam sites republishing a propper article and triggering a penalty.

The better my blog gets, the lower my rankings!
My blog was hit by Google Panda on July 21. My rankings dropped dramatically overnight. Nothing I do is helping. In fact, the day my guest post was published on one of the biggest blogs in my niche (DA over 70) my Google impressions dropped to an all time low and then got worse. (250 impressions and 12 clicks) You can see the first drop and the second drop in these screenshots and yes Google Webmasters and Google Analytics match. http://tinypic.com/r/2dvtvlj/5 http://tinypic.com/r/4u83t4/5 I am getting more fans, subscribers, traffic etc but my Google traffic just gets worse. I would really like to get some organic traffic! But I have no idea why this is happening. I checked manual actions and there is nothing. I cleaned up crawl errors and duplicate content. I get several backlinks a week within my niche from high authority sites. I just don't get it and I am very discouraged. What should I do?

Guest Blogging - Spread about or stick to a few?
I’ve decided to do guest blogs. I have written 10 tutorial articles, most are 500 - 600 words and none less than 300 words, there’s no fluff or padding, and I have ideas for 7 more. Is it best to spread your work across various sites and blogs? (assuming they are all good / high PR etc.) or could this make me come across as bit of a content whore? If one place likes my work and asks for more, are there any more benefits to me other than just ones internal to their site (that being increased exposure on their site) I’m also thinking about including my guest post tutorials on my own website as downloadable PDF’s with short descriptions so that the content remains original where my guest posts are. I also want to make video versions of the tutorials to put on youtube and embed within the guest posts too, but also my own website. Is all that a sound idea SEO wise? On other question if that’s OK. I have seen the following in google’s guidelines… “The following are examples of link schemes which can negatively impact a site's ranking in search results: sending someone a “free” product in exchange for them writing about it and including a link.” http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66356 That’s a bit of grey area for me knowing that normally a professional book reviewer receives a free review copy, in this case perhaps a blogger receives a free review copy. This has never been seen as suspicious so long as interests are declared. Do you think those google guidelines include this kind of activity? Regards,

Why Can't My Ecommerce Site Rank?
I've already done the on-site SEO things, URL's are all SEO-friendly, etc AND I've already done a few rounds of link building to some of the interior pages on my site, and I still can't get my site to rank. What other strategies can I employ to get my site to rank? I don't believe my keywords are that competitive (fleece blankets, baby blankets, etc.)

Should I remove links from my internal blog?
I have blogs/news sites on every one of my clients' websites (each representing a different business within the same industry - self storage). On each of these blog sites, I have a writer who places about 3-5 exact keyword match links (varying anchor text) to give interlink juice to the other off-site businesses owned by the client. Each of these blogs receive about five posts per week. I am sure this is mega-over-optimizing and a stupid thing to do considering penguin. So, my questions are: Moving forward - 1. Should i stop adding so many blog articles to each site? 2. How many interlinking anchor texts should I use per blog? 3. Should I go back and either get rid of all those interlinks on past blogs or just trash the blog articles altogether? Please help if you can - I very much appreciate the responses best bd

White, Black, Grey, B.S. Hat?
I was using Open Site Explorer to check out some competition and I noticed that there were a good amount of links coming from a no-name blog Seen Here. Obviously there are 50+ mentions of Express Auto Repair across a few blog posts. I've seen this tactic used before, but does it really do anything for the client, or is this just old school trickery? Thanks for your help.
