Blog Comments Criteria Question
-
When I am commenting on blogs to get links, what criteria should I use to make sure the blog is valuable and wont hurt me in the long run?
-
I also agree. I had a boss a few years back that demanded that I do this. I had to keep a spreadsheet of all of the posts, what I said, and the link I used. I fought tooth and nail against it, but I had to. I left a short time later. But on a side note, that is how I found SEOmoz and other awesome blogs.

As a Penguin victim, I believe what you're recommending is not enough to be safe. I was even penalized for using my name as the anchor text. Some of the sites where I used my name might have been unrelated and a few might have been moderated too loosely but the high degree of danger greatly outweighs any benefit. Whatever you do, do NOT point the links at your homepage! Other people seem to believe there is a benefit but it's probably too marginal to be worth the time required and the risks.

I agree. Don't leave blog comments just to get links. The ones that will let you do that easily are not the blogs you want links on. The good blogs will have humans reviewing comments and systems put in place to make sure that you don't sign up for an account and drop links.

"When I am commenting on blogs to get links"
Stop right there!! You should not be commenting on blogs for the sole purpose of gaining links. This in no why helps the community that you’re participating in as I am sure the comments being left are of low value. Commenting on blogs to get links back to your website is a tactic people used 5 years ago and should not be used this day in age.
Now, Blog commenting does come in handy when you actually have something with value to contribute and can show a community you know your stuff on your given Nitch. I definitely recommend using blog commenting this way to gain more exposure for yourself / brand but only if your comments really do add value.

Not auto approve - those are usually spammed, if posts have 7934 comments that read like "great site, thanks! bookmarked!" and link to their own sites with keyword anchors, its a bad site
-
Niche related - content on site is related to your website, don't contain illegal/porn/gambling/pharma related content
-
Switch up anchor text - don't over optimize, make your linking text varied. use real name, brand name, keywords
-
Make sure the blog is indexed & ranking - if its penalized, your time is better spent elsewhere
-
Social signals - the more tweets/shares a blog post gets, the better the website typically is
I'm sure there is more but having these elements is almost guaranteed to be a good blog.

I usually find that blogs/newsites found through google news work better even though most are nofollow

Ecommerce promotion: How many blog posts per week minimum for fast launch
Hello, We're trying to jumpstart our new Ecommerce site with a blog. We just launched and have 4 thorough blog posts which I'm working to refine to 10X content. Trying to make all content 10X. As you know, it's not easy. Our niche has little to no content written by competitors. We are hoping to get to about $5000/month sales with this site. How many blog posts should we launch a week (10X content) in order to take advantage of boosting our results in the rankings as fast as possible. Does it usually take 6 months? I know the more the better, but consider we only have so many resources, so I'm trying to decide if one 10X piece a week is enough, or 2 or 3. Thanks.

Best Blog Post Length to get Links
Okay, kind of silly question but i am looking for some help interpreting an analysis done by John Doherty almost a year ago: http://moz.com/blog/what-kind-of-content-gets-links-in-2012 In the document he mentions the correlation that longer posts on average receive more links but the graphs were really hard to interpret (for me). Based on the data what is the correct size we should shoot for (most graphs were missing labels). Any one have any insight? Should i shoot for 300 words per post, higher, etc? Thanks! Kyle

Blog Swapping
Hi, I know that it's not advised to engage in link swapping activities, but what about when it's actually useful for our readers? As an example, I'm writing a guest post on a hen party website on how to choose the right hairdresser for your wedding day (relevant content to both their site and mine). They asked if I'd like a post in return about the best way to do makeup if you're going on a fancy dress night or hen party (which is again relevant to both our audience groups and will be of great interest to them). Is this sort of link swapping okay, when the primary goal is to actually provide our audience with a richer experience, or would this still raise red flags for search engines? Thanks!

Does posting on blogs with anchored backlinks do you any good?
My current strategy: I am ranking for keyword and site: Immigration Consultant I access the Fresh Web Explorer and search my keyword, then find the blogposts with High Authority where I can post using HTML and include my link in my signature, or sometimes the post has a link associated with the username. Now my question is this, does this count? will google even crawl the comments? can I aid the crawling process somehow? Any advice on creating relavent back-links is much appreciated. Thank you

Cluster of outbound links on blog
Hi, If a blog has a section which contains 40 outbound links almost like a blogroll do you think Google looks at this cluster as suspicious? Could this come across like paid links to Google?

Branded vs non branded keyword question
I have been doing a lot of research about my competitors on open site explorer and have come to see that most of them are getting a high percentage of links from branded anchor text. It is almost to the point where they are not even using any keyword terms as anchor text. I have a few questions: 1. why are they doing this 2.. how are they ranking for keyword terms when I cannot find any anchor text in their link profile that reflects their target keywords. 3. is it better for me to focus on building branded anchor text keywords than to do exact match keyword terms especially after the panda update 4. if it is better for me to focus on branded anchor text only, how do i rank for keyword terms?

Question about 302 re-direct
Hi, I have noticed a competitor of mine is using 302 redirects to his website. It seems to me that he is buying a huge amout of domains and linking to his own website though this. I have never noticed anyone else do this before and wondered what people's views are on this?
