No longer showing for 'money' phrases but long tail combinations rank high?
-
I hope someone can shed some light on this as I've been pulling my hair out so much there's hardly any left!
Background: 12 year old website that for about 10 years had Top 3 rankings for 100's of phrases but rankings first dropped off August 2011. Panda seemed to be the cause but finding the exact issue is hard. We are an online travel agent and every hotel page has duplicate content copied from other websites. This has not been changed although lots of sections in the site still rank well, so do the hotel pages themselves. Lots of internal duplicate issues have been resolved but with no effect.
Our old style link, link, link all day long with our 2-word main key phrase as anchor text has given us an unnatural backlink profile but no message has been left by G about this in WMT (yet).
Internal link structure is poor with all pages linking back to the homepage with our 'money' 2-word phrase in 3 places.
Penguin wiped two thirds of all our backlinks back in May 2012.
Why then, do we still rank for our 'money' phrase on the homepage when it has some extra words included and becomes long tail?
e.g.
CityName Apartments (money phrase) - Now ranks page 2-3
CityName Apartments to rent for the night - Ranks #2 on Google in all countries
To make things more confusing other pages rank really well for similar money phrase
e.g.
CityName Apartments Offers - Ranks 2nd on 185,000,000 results (not homepage)
It seems only the homepage is effected (where 95% of inbound links point) but if the site wide duplicates or unnatural link profile was flagged it would effect more than one page of the site. Wouldn't it?

For whatever it's worth, have a site which was also mauled by Panda & Penquin in April, 2012. Probably lost around 30% to Panda and Penguin knocked it down to around 25% of the pre-mauling traffic. The Penguin mauling is algo based and is probably caused by anchor text in manually written comments on relevant blogs or pages. Without doing anything (as in taking an extended vacation from blogging, linking, etc.) traffic is now at 50% of pre-mauling (probably half of the Penguin effect is gone). Seems to benefit from each Penguin update by 10% - 20% per month. I am curious how this compares to "link removal" efforts.

Hi Marcus
Thanks for confirming my suspicions.
It's time to bite the bullet and start re-writing all the content!

Hey Simon
It's fairly easy to diagnose a panda issue and start by checking the dates you lost traffic. Lets assume you have a panda issue and that has pulled down lots of the rankings for various pages and sections of the site.
Now, that does not mean, that subsequently, you have not picked up a penguin problem as well and looking at your link profile, it would certainly not be surprising:
- No URLs in the top 5 anchors
- Links from low quality sources (http://zurichhotelsweb.com/links/links13.html)
- Links from topically irrelevant sources
- High percentage of keyword anchors
- low percentage of URL anchors
So, if you can check the date you first lost organic traffic in analytics you can pretty much determine if it is a panda problem.
You can read up on the types of thin content here:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/fat-pandas-and-thin-contentThen, you need to identify all the thin content pages and either update them or remove them. If you can't remove them or they have a purpose then you can noindex them and ideally nofollow the links to them from the rest of the site.
Once you have done that, and you need to be thorough, then you should see a bounce back from those issues but I am fairly sure you will have accrued some penguin issues as well so I would also then check the penguin dates for further drops.
I have one client that got hit by Panda on the 19th of April and lost around 25% of organic search volume from Google and then by Penguin on the 24th and lost around another 50% of the remaining volume. We have solved a lot of the penguin problems but are now looking at the panda problems which can be larger in scale to diagnose and resolve.
Fact of the matter is, you have to be fastidious in your approach and remove anything that is duplicated or thin and then go after the Penguin problems.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Marcus
I know this sounds like Penguin but this issue kicked in nearly a year before Penguin was announced which is why I'm thinking Panda.
Thanks for taking a look Simon

Hi Simon,
Can you drop a link? A quick look at the backlink profile would really help here as it certainly looks like a penguin problem for the 'money keyword' from the description but without checking, it's hard to tell.
My thinking would be that the longer search keywords are not competitive so you still rank for these terms. That said, if you have internal / external duplicate pages that are not ranking, if you can't or won't change the content, then maybe they could be worth noindexing as a test at least.
Re the links, I have been working with various sites with a bad link profile and subsequently done a bit of research about what constitutes a safe and natural (or super natural) link profile and the basics seem to be:
- 50% of links should be from topically relevant sites
- keep keyword anchors below 50% and ideally around 30%
- aim to have at least two of the top 5 anchors as branded URLs
- aim for around 70% of the link profile as branded url links
- link to a wide variety of documents with a wide variety of terms
- keyword anchors for product pages should be below 45% of total anchors
- keyword anchors to category pages should be below 25% of total anchors
More details here:
http://www.bowlerhat.co.uk/blog/seo/anchor-text-ratios-and-link-building/This is possibly a little conservative but is the approach we are using to repair link profiles and for future link building efforts.
Hope this helps

Title tag: Long tail words or keyword dilution?
Hi all, I am a newbie to SEO. Lately, I have been struggling to optimize my title tag. Ones say that we should have long tail words in title tags because long tail words improve click through rate and generate quality leads. On the other hand, ones say that putting other words in the title tag will dilute the main keyword that my page ranks for. Do keywords really dilute each other in the title tags? I am really confused. Let me give this an example: Web Design Services | Company Name Web Design Services with Conversion Focused | Company Name Which one would you prefer and why? Thank you. 😄 Best, Raymond

Blacklisted website no longer blacklisted, but will not appear on Google's search engine.
We have a client who before us, had a website that was blacklisted by Google. After we created their new website, we submitted an appeal through Google's Webmaster Tools, and it was approved. One year later, they are still unable to rank for anything on Google. The keyword we are attempting to rank for on their home page is "Day in the Life Legal Videos" which shouldn't be too difficult to rank for after a year. But their website cannot be found. What else can we do to repair this previously blacklisted website after we're already been approved by Google? After doing a link audit, we found only one link with a spam score of 7, but I highly doubt that is what is causing this website to no longer appear on Google. Here is the website in question: https://www.verdictvideos.com/

Cannot Increase Ranking For a Keyword Phrase
I've been working on the keyword phrase, "Niceville Assisted Living" for the website: http://nicevilleassistedliving.com and my increase in rankings has pretty much stalled. When I first started working on this website, a lot of the content was duplicated (which we took care of by plugging in unique content), there were locations listed on the homepage that were throwing my rankings off, I've created blog posts each week (we've even tried posting one post every day for a week), added the Facebook feed to the homepage, corrected errors in the theme, and I'm trying to get a resources page built. I know content is a very, very large part of SEO.. but it seems like the content I am plugging in isn't helping. There aren't any errors in Webmaster Tools and my keyword density is fairly close to the website ranking #1. I think my biggest problem is backlinks. Other websites have quite a few whereas the website I'm working on doesn't have any (I'm working on that, but the number I have doesn't compare to the websites ranking in the top three). I'm stumped as to what to do next. Does anyone have suggestions to improve the ranking for this keyword phrase?

Rank on specific Google
Hi folks, a website is hosted with a TLD like .com in the USA. The content etc. is obviously all english but now we want to focus on a specific Google like .co.uk What must be necessarily be done to rank better? Is it enough just to buy a .co.uk domain and set the nameserver up or do we need to get a british hosting? Thanks in advance. Mike

My New(ish) Site Isn't Ranking Well And Recently Fell
I launched my site (jesfamilylaw.com) at the beginning of January. Since then, I've been trying to build high quality back links. I have a few back links with keyword targeted anchor text from some guest posts I've published (maybe 3 or so) and I have otherwise signed up for business directories and industry-specific directories. I have a few social media profiles and some likes on Facebook, both for the company page and some posts. Despite this, I've had a lot of trouble cracking Google's top ten for any term, long or tall tail. I was starting to climb for Evanston Family Law, which is the key term I believe I am best optimized for, but took a dive yesterday. I fell from maybe the 14th result to somewhere on the 4th page. For all my other target terms, I don't know if I've gotten into the 20s yet. To further complicate matters, my Google Places listing isn't showing and is on the second page of results for Places searches, after businesses that aren't located in the same city. The night before I fell, I resubmitted my site to Google because Webmaster tools was showing duplicate title tags when I had none. I had also made a couple changes to some internal links and title tags, but only for a small fraction of the site. Long story short, I don't know what's going on. I don't know why I fell in the rankings and why my site isn't competitive for some of my target key phrases. I've read so many horror stories about Penguin that I fear my onsite optimization may be hurting my rankings or my back links are insufficient. I've done plenty of competitor research and the sites that are beating me have very aggressive onsite optimization and few back links. In short, I am very confused. Any help would be immensely appreciated.

What is wrong with my once highly ranked site?
Hello, I'm really desperate for some help. I believe I've been hit by Panda as traffic started diminishing late March for my 6 year old website. I've never had a sharp drop, only gradual. I've lost a load traffic since then. I did change shopping carts in June since I had a a canonical issue from my old cart that couldn't be corrected. The old cart also did not allow me to have unique product titles and the urls were garbled with letters, numbers, etc... I know Panda did not like that. I've made several changes (cleaned up broken links, added more content to my site, added Disallow: /search/ and Disallow: /search to my robots.txt file to avoid duplicate content from my search box.) My most prized keywords (tutu and tutus) are on page 15 or so of Google now, when they used to be on page 1 or 2 at the worst. Other good ones are slipping too. I do need to hire an SEO to optimize my titles eventually as I believe my they are still a bit stuffed but before I do that, I am just trying to get the other stuff done first. My main questions are this... Do any of you see something else that looks bad to you in the eyes of Google? I'd love the cold, hard truth as I'm pretty desperate for my site to recover, if at all possible. Thank you in advance! Here is my site: http://alturl.com/mvmux

High ranked web site on Google GONE - but webspam team says nothing wrong
We purchased several weeks ago a .org blog that has been highly ranked (number 1 on competetive keywords) for at least a year. it is a blog We moved the blog to our IP range and it went from #1 on top keyword and first page on another to the home page just gone. Now there was a secondary page indexed that stayed on page 5 for the keyword the home page was ranked #1 but the home page (which was high ranked page is just gone) We wrote the Google Webmaster team for reconsideration but they wrote back and said the web spam team said nothing wrong. A contact of mine who works for one of the most well known SEO compaines in the world says because we moved it the site could disappear for a week or so but the "algos would realize" and return it to that top spot soon. Does anyone know anything about moving a site to new IP and issues that can result?

My homepage doesn't rank anymore. It's been replaced by irrelevant subpages which rank around 100-200 instead of top 5.
Hey guys, I think I got some kind of penalty for my homepage. I was in top5 for my keywords. Then a few days ago, my homepage stopped ranking for anything except searching for my domain name in Google. sitename.com/widget-reviews/ previously ranked #3 for "widget reviews"
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | wearetribe
but now....
sitename.com/widget-training-for-pet-cats/ is ranking #84 for widget reviews instead. Similarly across all my other keywords, irrelevant, wrong pages are ranking. Did I get some kind of penalty?0
