I need de-spam help/advice
-
For one of my sites I am working on I outsourced SEO about 3 years ago. One of the "tricks" the SEO used at the time was to pay for several Blog posts to be "sponsored" by this web site using exact match keywords for the domain.
1 Where do I look to determine the spammy links pointing to this site?
2 Have you had success getting rid of these bad links?
-
The purpose of OSE is to show you links to your site. There is no way to accurately determine which links are organic vs manipulative without visiting the site.
DMOZ links would not be considered as manipulative.
-
Is DMOZ really a spammy link? It's the first one that came up using those filters.
-
Thanks very much for your reply, really appreciated your advise.
Now im going through Paddy blog,
Thanks for your help

Ryan,
This is excellent and clear:
"The message Google is sending is very clear: stop building links and start earning them."
As to expecting Penguin to keep improving over time, Google has already said it will, just like Panda.
There are a ton of ways to earn links, the first is to create great content that people want to link to. Look at how Google News works in terms of ranking articles. One of the SEO variables considered most valuable by those using Google News per Search Engine Land survey was cites (links) from other high authority Google News sources. Those sources don't link unless it is quality content.
Great point.
-
The first step is to ensure your site architecture is solid. If your site is unattractive, has broken links, is difficult to read, etc. then fewer people will want to link to it. Set up a Responsive Design mobile site, have a graphic designer improve the look and feel of your site, crawl your site to ensure your internal links are solid, gather user feedback, etc.
Next, you want to build "best on the web" type of content. Your content should be sincerely helpful, original and something readers want to share.
Find out who the influencers are in your niche. Ask them what content they need and give it to them! Each time you are likely to earn a link and be exposed to a new audience. Forget about search engines. The direct traffic value is fantastic.
There are countless articles on the subject of links. I would suggest the above advice is your best bet but if you require more direct tips, then I recommend you learn from a link building expert. Of course, great advice does not come cheap. Make sure you are prepared to pay him in the proper currency.

Sharing your experience is great! It is what this Q&A is all about
Regarding your competitor's anchor text, I would suggest not spending a moment of time thinking about it. Fairness is based on perception and none of us have all the facts. When it comes to penalties, we should each focus on our sites and let Google sort out our competitors. It can be frustrating at times, but focusing on others only allows that frustration to build.
63% is still a VERY high anchor text percentage. If that site belonged to a client of mine, I would begin a manipulative link removal campaign. There is simply no way to earn enough quality links in a reasonable amount of time. I have repeatedly seen very fast recoveries after link removal campaigns. I hope this information is helpful.
-
I do Agree with you but to be honest, unfortunately clients dont have patience to wait they would like to get quick results. And to earn link you need to have some help from your client in terms of any incentive but they don't want to spend anytime just like us to get on with things,
I had the same issue with a site in april it was hit by penguin, i then started removing link , and had to request for link to be remove numerous time from sites and then wait for google to get index.
i did it till end of june nothing happen also send a request to google the reply was there is no manual penalty but it could be algorithmic penalty I checked my competitors link profile they were about 70 to 80 % direct keyword anchor then i compare it to mine and it was 63% after the analysis i start working on link building . start creating industry niche research content in our blog then some social activities and focus on guest blogging, but my anchor where all brand name or naked anchor . It work for me the SERPs are improving but still a long way to to go. sorry but im just sharing my experience.
-
That method is likely to cause more trouble then it solves.
Many site owners and SEOs seem to be confusing the Penguin mechanism with the message. The message Google is sending is very clear: stop building links and start earning them.
You are proposing to build links to manipulate the Google algorithm into not detecting the other "over-optimized" anchor text links. I have seen this advice and frankly, it is horrible. Most site owners have far too many manipulative links to "balance out" with legitimate links. Therefore you are building manipulative links without using anchor text to bypass the current Penguin detection system. I would bet a lot the next Penguin will not only continue detecting the original manipulative links (even if you change the anchor text) but also the new ones. Even if I am wrong, then the Penguin update after will. I expect Penguin to be just like Panda. It will keep improving over time.
Remove the bad links. Stop "building" links and start earning them. Site owners who follow the advice to change anchor text or bury the "over optimized" links are going to be hurting really bad, really soon.
-
Another way is to balance your link profile by creating backlinks Using generic , nacked and brand anchor links to balance things out,
-
The worst ever was my first campaign in 2011. My most recent campaign we had about a 60% response rate which was awesome.
-
What kind of success rate do you find you get Ryan? Mine really varies from niche to niche but is nowhere near 80%+
-
lol yup, if you had fun doing 8+ hours of link building, you can enjoy it even more when you have to remove them. #damnthegoogleoverlords

If your traffic dropped on April 25th and you know there are bad links pointing to your site, then the likely cause is Penguin. It's always important to understand the exact cause of the drop as Google makes approximately 50 algorithm changes each month. There were also Panda changes in April.
To gain an initial look at the spammy links, simply go to Open Site Explorer: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/. This tool is part of the SEOmoz tools. For most sites affected by Penguin, you can locate spammy links pretty fast. At the top of the page there are 4 drop down boxes. Set the first three drop downs as follows:
followed+301, only external, pages on this root domain
As far as getting rid of the bad links, I have had a lot of success. The process is very manual and not a lot of fun, but it works. You need to contact site owners and very politely request they remove the links. If the first attempt does not succeed, do not give up. Keep trying.
Best of luck!
-
A lot of things happened in April. There were Panda refreshes on April 19 and 27 and Penguin hit on April 24. I'd be wary about cutting links until you are sure what you are dealing with. You could do more harm than good.
If this is a Penguin issue then no one knows exactly what has to be done to recover. Many webmasters will advocate getting spammy links removed. But the problem is that in order to beat the algorithm you may have to get 85-95% of the links removed and in most cases that is near impossible.
If you'd like me to have a look at your site I do a diagnosis package for a very reasonable fee. I have a good look at your analytics data and webmaster tools to give you an idea of what you are dealing with. You can contact me through my profile page.
-
Good rule of thumb, if you're getting links from:
- .info
- .ru
- .biz
They are usually poor links and should be avoided of removed.
Check your site's links in OSE (Open Site Explorer)
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/
If they are:
Directory links or article submission links it should be easy to log in and delete them, assuming you were provided with the credentials.
-
The site hasn't received any unnatural links warning. I just know that rankings dropped DRAMATICALLY in April.
I also know that the mozTrust of this site is pretty low compared to the competition. I attribute it to this.
-
Have you been hit with an unnatural links warning? Penguin? Not sure?
It's important to know what you are dealing with before slashing links.
If I'm trying to get an unnatural links warning penalty reconsidered then I generally try to get removed any and all links that an SEO may have made. So, if it's an anchor texted link from an article, 98% of the time it's unnatural. I find though that most website owners are too lenient on themselves when they are trying to decide which links to remove.
I have had success in getting some webmasters to remove links like these - but you won't be likely to get them all.

Removing/ Redirecting bad URL's from main domain
Our users create content for which we host on a seperate URL for a web version. Originally this was hosted on our main domain. This was causing problems because Google was seeing all these different types of content on our main domain. The page content was all over the place and (we think) may have harmed our main domain reputation. About a month ago, we added a robots.txt to block those URL's in that particular folder, so that Google doesn't crawl those pages and ignores it in the SERP. We now went a step further and are now redirecting (301 redirect) all those user created URL's to a totally brand new domain (not affiliated with our brand or main domain). This should have been done from the beginning, but it wasn't. Any suggestions on how can we remove all those original URL's and make Google see them as not affiliated with main domain?? or should we just give it the good ol' time recipe for it to fix itself??

Removing Poison Links w/o Disavow
Okay so I've been working at resolving former black-hat SEO tactics for this domain for many many months. Finally our main keyword is falling down the rankings like crazy no matter how many relevant, quality links I bring to the domain. So I'm ready to take action today. There is one inner-page which is titled exactly as the keyword we are trying to match. Let's call it "inner-page.html" This page has nothing but poison links with exact match anchor phrases pointing at it. The good links I've built are all pointed at the domain itself. So what I want to do is change the url of this page and let all of the current poison links 404. I don't trust the disavow tool and feel like this will be a better option. So I'm going to change the page's url to "inner_page.html" or in otherwords, simply changed to an underscore instead of a hyphen. How effective do you think this will be as far as 404ing the bad links and does anybody out there have experience using this method? And of course, as always, I'll keep you all posted on what happens with this. Should be an interesting experiment at least. One thing I'm worried about is the traffic sources. We seem to have a ton of direct traffic coming to that page. I don't really understand where or why this is taking place... Anybody have any insight into direct traffic sources to inner-pages? There's no reason for current clients to visit and potentials shouldn't be returning so often... I don't know what the deal is there but "direct" is like our number 2 or 3 traffic source. Am I shooting myself in the foot here? Here we go!

I am experiencing referrer spam from http://r-e-f-e-r-e-r.com/ (don't click) - What should I do?
It amazes me that every day in search marketing is filled with something new that I don't know or never heard of. Most of you are probably familiar with referrer spam, but I hadn't ever heard of it before. I am currently experiencing referral spam on my personal blog. What's the best way to get rid of this pest? Shall I ignore them? Block them in my robots.txt file? Use Google's Disavow? or should I just plain holler "Curse you referral spam people!!!" ? Thanks all!

HELP - Site architecture of E-Commerce Mega Menu - Linkjuice flow
Hi everyone, I hope you have a couple of mins to give me your opinion. Ecommerce site has around 2000 products, in english and spanish, and around only 70 hits per day if that. We have done a lot of optimisation on the site - Page Titles, URL's, Content, H1's, etc.... Everything on page is pretty much under control, except I am starting to realise the site architecture could be harming our SEO efforts. Once someone arrives on site they are language detected and do a 302 to either domain.com/EN or domain.com/ES depending on their preferred language. Then on the homepage, we have the big MEGA MENU - and we have
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | bjs2010
CAT 1
SubCat 1
SubsubCat 1
SubsubCat 2
SubsubCat 3 Overall, there are 145 "categories". Plus links to some CMS pages, like Home, Delivery terms, etc... Each Main Category, contains the products of everything related to that category - so for example:
KITCHENWARE
COOKWARE BAKINWARE
SAUCEPANS BOWLS
FRYING PANS Kitchenware contains: ALL PRODUCTS OF SUBCATS BELOW, SO COOKWARE ITEMS, SAUCEPANS, FRYING PANS, BAKINGWARE, etc... plus links to those categories through breadcrumbs and a left hand nav in addition to the mega menu above. So once the bots hit the site, immediately they have this structure to deal with. Here is what stats look like:
Domain Authority: 18 www.domain.com/EN/
PA: 27
mR: 3.99
mT: 4.90 www.domain.com/EN/CAT 1
PA: 15
mR: 3.05
mT: 4.54 www.domain.com/EN/CAT 1/SUBCAT1
PA: 15
mR: 3.05
mT: 4.54 Product pages themselves - have a PA of 1 and no mR or mT. I really need some other opinions here - I am thinking of: Removing links in Nav menu so it only contains CAT1 and SUBCAT1 but DELETE SUBSUBCATS1 which represent around 80 links Remove products within the CAT1 page - eg., the CAT 1 would "tile" graphical links to subcategories, but not display products themselves. So products are only available right at the lowest part of the chain (which will be shortened) But I am willing to hear any other ideas please - maybe another alternative is to start building links to boost DA and linkjuice? Thanks all, Ben0 -
Website Vulnerability Leading to Doorway Page Spam. Need Help.
Keywords he is ranking for , houston dwi lawyer, houston dwi attorney and etc.. Client was acquired in June and since then we have done nothing but build high quality links to the website. None of our clients were dropped/dinged or impacted by the panda/penguin updates in 2012 or updates previously published via Google. Which proves we do quality SEO work. We went ahead and started duplicating links which worked for other legal clients and 5 months later this client is either dropping or staying in local maps results and we are performing very badly in organic results. Some more history..... When he first engaged our company we switched his website from a CMS called plone to word press. During our move I ran some searches to figure out which pages we needed to 301 and we came across many profile pages or member pages created on the clients CMS (PLONE). These pages were very spammy and linked to other plone sites using car model, make, year type keywords (ex:jeep cherokee dealerships). I went through these sites to see if they were linking back and could not find any back links to my clients website. Obviously nobody authorized these pages, they all looked very hackish and it seemed as though there was a vulnerability on his plone CMS installation which nobody caught. Fast forward 5 months and the newest OSE update is showing me a good 50+ back links with unrelated anchor text back links. These anchor text links are the same color as the background and can only be found if you hover your mouse over certain areas of the site. All of these sites are built on Plone and allot of them are linked to other businesses or community websites. These websites obviously have no clue they have been hacked or are being used for black hat purposes. There are dozens of unrelated anchor text links being used on external websites which are pointing back to our clients website. Examples: <a class="clickable title link-pivot" title="See top linking pages that use this anchor text">autex Isuzu, </a><a class="clickable title link-pivot" title="See top linking pages that use this anchor text">Toyota service department ratings, </a><a class="clickable title link-pivot" style="color: #5e5e5e; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; line-height: normal;" title="See top linking pages that use this anchor text">die cast BMW and etc..</a> Obviously the first step is to use the disavow link tool, which will be completed this week. The second step is to take some feedback from the SEO community. It seems like these pages are automatically created using some type of bot. It will be very tedious if we have to continually remove these links. I hope there is a way to notify Google that these websites are all plone and have a vulnerability, which black hats are using to harm the innocent... If i cannot get Google to handle this, then the only other option is to start fresh with a new domain name. What would you do in this situation. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Which of these elements are good / bad link building practices?
Hi, I need some help. I recently got some help with an seo project from a contractor. He did 50 directory submissions and 50 article submissions. I got good results, going up about 20 places (still a long way to the first page!) on google.co.uk on a tough key word Since this project I learned article marketing is not cool. So I am wondering about what I should do next. The contractor has proposed a new bigger project consisting of the elements listed below. I don’t know which of these elements are ok and which aren’t. If they are not ok are they: 1) a waste of time or 2) something I could get penalized for? Let me know what you think?? Thanks, Andrew 100 ARTICLE SUBMISSIONS [APPROVED ARTICLES] -> 1 article submitted to 100 article directories 50 PRESS RELEASE SUBMISSIONS [APPROVED & SCREENSHOTS]-> 1 PR writing & submissions to top 50 PR distribution sites each 150 PRIVATE BLOGS SUBMISSION [APPROVED ARTICLES] -> 1 article submitted to 150 private blogs submission 100 WEBSITE DIRECTORY SUBMISSION -> 1 url (home page) submitted to 100 top free web directories 50 SOCIAL BOOKMARKING [CONFIRMED LINKS] -> 1 url of site submitted to top 50 social bookmarking websites 40 PROFILE BACK-LINKS [CONFIRMED LINKS] -> 1-3 url's of site submitted and create 40 profile websites 50 SEARCH ENGINES -> submission to all the major search engines 20 NEWS WEBSITES -> Ping all links from reports to news websites
