I am trying to learn a little more about Travel SEO, particularly in the "hotel" vertical.

what are some of the top Hotel SEO sites out there and what are they doing right?

Tripadvisor is great at SEO in general, but I've heard they struggle a little in the "hotel" vertical. Is there anything they can do to improve their rankings in this area? Does anyone have any suggestions, whether it be a far out idea or on-site optimization?

I think to achieve good results for any "vertical" focus has to be actual users and not search volumes. SEO, SEM, & Inbound Social Marketing has to be startegic & creative. (Say Adding Value?)
Here few suggestions & features I liked from Urbanspoon , Expedia
1. Scope for UGC (User Generated Content) : Reviews, Ratings, How to Reach, Overall Experience.
2. Solid site architecture. ( For fun we name it wysiwyg architecture ) - Panoramic view of Hotel room, restaurant, Car for RentOr Add value using more relevant modules on Page.
3. Many great websites are missing implementation of Microdata using schema.org
4. Sectionwise Sitemap.xml, Image Sitemap, Video Sitemap
5. User-centric Navigation (Internal linking with partial anchor text)
6. Add Value using cool Facebook fan page or app
7. Promote every effort & channel strategically
8. Implement Canonical tags across Multilingual TLDs.Hope, I have made attempt to enlist major features which Tripadvisor is missing

Most top hotel SEO sites are very likely to be chains with an SEO/ Digital Marketing team capable of creating content, linkbuilding and integrated marketing strategies. I know Hilton has been working pretty hard on their SEO in the past.

I would say Tripadvisor is doing fairly well. Their strategy is interesting at a hotel level, they tend to rank across their multiple properties, say you type "Hyatt Hotel Sydney", apart from the main site and those doing direct link campaigns to the hotel, you will find 4-5 properties of tripadvisor both AU & .com.

I think it depends on the keywords - for example "bali hotels" is a head term, but since the introduction of the hotel box on Google results its not a particularly high traffic driver any more.
Individual hotel names on the other hand aren't impacted by the hotel box, thus you tend to have the traditional Google organic results (i.e., 10 slots per page) and more opportunity to acquire decent traffic for rankings between 1-6.
Sites like hotels.com and agoda.com are pretty strong on hotel names, but rankings are so varied depending on the Google locale you're accessing.
Google are making it increasingly difficult to gain visibility in the hotel sector having also recently launched their own "hotel finder" product: http://www.google.com/hotelfinder/

Ranking for a brand term with "&" (and) in the name?
Hello Moz community. We have a company that rebranded their name to "Bar & Cocoa" with the URL https://barandcocoa.com/. It's been about 3 months, and the website has yet to show up organically anywhere within the first 50 results foer their brand terms. It seems that Google pretty much ignores the "&" or "and" word when typing in bar & cocoa, or bar and cocoa in search. You'd think with that with the exact domain name, it would at least move the needle a bit, but it has not helped. Even being in Denver, I'm getting results for a "Bar Cocoa" business located in Charlotte, NC, and the secondary pages that belong to that business, and then a bunch of other companies, products and irrelevant search results (like a parked domain)! Any suggestions or ideas, please help!

International SEO Options?
Hi we currently have a site which is a example.com domain in the Australian market (we have geo-targeted to Australia within search console). We are looking to expand to United States. I have added the potential options down below, just wondering which one you guys think would be best from a SEO and practical standpoint? Or if there are other options i should consider? Option 1 The Australian domain is strong so this option takes this into consideration. Keep example.com (Australian) Add on: Sub-Directory for US Which would be: example.com/us/ In Search Console set the sub-folder to target US and also setup hreflang tags. Setup the US site on the sub-directory. Option 2 Add sub-folders for both Aus and US example/au/ (Australian)

Does 301 vs 302 matter when dealing with "social signal"?
When looking at links and how search engines look at "social signal," does it matter if a link is 301 vs 302? In addition to that, if I build out my own short URL system that gets used for link redirects that include referral attributes, would/could I get penalized if I use 301 instead of 302?

Where Does Blogging Fit Into SEO
I read an article yesterday that said blogging comes under the heading of social media, which is at the top of the so called SEO pyramid. I have taken this to mean less time should be spent in social media compared to other areas of SEO. Yet content creation was at the bottom of the pyramid (more time allocation here). Isn't blogging part of content creation? I would have thought there is a limit to what can be done for service/product & landing pages. Whereas blogs are a great way to produce more unique content for a website. Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks - Christina

Multinational SEO
Hi all The situation: We have a .com website that is the core of our business over the last 3 years we have built this into a very sucessful brand. Customers are able to purchase products from our website and have it delivered anywhere in the world. As part of the development of our business we want to obviously rank high within serps regardless of what country our potential customer is from. We understand that we will need to translate much of our website to achieve this and that is something that we have in the pipeline. My question is more aimed at the English speaking countries and how we should optimise our website for these. For example: websitename.com.au and websitename.co.uk were initialy setup as 301 redirects to websitename.com, however, we have now set them up as their own domains which display the exact same content as the .com website. So to clarify the content on websitename.com/product1.html is also on websitename.com.au/product1.html and websitename.co.uk/product1.html What would the best way to ensure that our .com.au and .co.uk gain traction within the appropriate country? Is duplicate content still an issue? All our prices are displayed in USD will this go againts? We use US English (with a sprinkle of chinglish) as our websites copy languange should we change spelling for AU and UK? Does anyone have any case studies and or other reports I can read that may help me find the right solution for us. Thanks Danny

SEO & Magento Multistore - I have been asked if "duplicatiing" a magento stor using its "Multistore" functionality will cause both to be picked up as duplicate content, can anybody help?
Hello all. I have been asked what the consequences of using Magento's "multistore" functionality are if we were to duplicate our entire magento store and place it on a secondary domain... The simple answer which comes to my mind is that it will be a flagged as duplicate content. However, is this still the case if the site were placed in a different country? The original being the UK the copy being Ireland (both English speaking) How would Google.co.uk & Google.ie treat these stores? Hope this is clear... our site is http://www.tower-health.co.uk
