Problem with re-direction
-
Please help me to solve a problem with redirection. I re-do the
site and move it to new domain page-by-page as recommended.I use WordPress Redirect plugin. I did everything as written 10
days ago but don't see redirection. For example, old page http://aurora17.com/?page_id=2485
New page http://njcruise.org/alaska-cruise-tour/
Where is a problem? How to solve it?
-
If you have trouble tomorrow, add me on Facebook or skype and I'll try and chat you through it.

Thank you!!! I will try tomorrow.

The entire documentation is here: http://urbangiraffe.com/plugins/redirection/
I haven't used this plugin - only Simple 301s - not Redirection. So I'm not entirely sure if they want the whole URL but it should be simple to test. I would think you would put in the http:// but try it without - maybe that's the issue?
-
Matt, please clarify format for request. It has to be the whole address as http://aurora17.com/?page_id=2485 or /aurora17.com/?page_id=2485
Thank you!
-
No worries! Let us know how it goes.
-
Thank you Matt!
-
Yes, don't use the plugin on NJCruise - just Aurora.
If they don't work, just deactivate (don't remove) the plugin and try the one I linked above (Simple 301s) It's a much easier plugin and it should work easily. If not, you can always delete Simple 301s and reactivate Redirection - so you'd still have all your work.
-
Right now I have on both! This is because I didn't know what to do! So, remove redirection from NJcruise? Thank you!
-
Hello Nadejda.
I see the plugin is installed on your aurora17 blog, but as you say, it isn't working.
Your old site has several problems, but it appears it does know how to redirect, but the plugin, not the apache server would be doing the redirecting if you set it up correctly.
Are you sure you set the redirects on Aurora and not on NJCruise?
-
You set up the plugin exactly as I said and it didn't work? That's odd. I think it's the way we're writing URLs then.
Deactivate the plugin.
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-301-redirects/
Install and try Simple 301s ... try that. If it doesn't work, we'll keep working on the URLs for the first plugin but this should make your life better in like 5 minutes.
-
Thank you Matt! I used redirection plugin on NJcruise.org but noticed that this doesn't work. I switched to aurora17.com - the same issue. I changed the plugin - no result. Your suggestion? Thank you!
-
The problem is on aurora17.com - your Wordpress Redirect plugin is not working for some reason.
You're using this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/redirection/ ?
Source URL: http://aurora17.com/?page_id=2485
Target URL: http://njcruise.org/alaska-cruise-tour/
Type: Simple redirection
Method: 301
Then you just push "Add redirection" - it should be ok? Is the plugin activated on Aurora or NJCruise? You want it on Aurora to "push" the URLs to the new site. More info if you can...

Recently re-built our site and changed domain. Now I want to go back to old domain - it it a bad idea?
About a year ago I rebuilt our website and changed our domain name. We rent villas in Tuscany, we used to be 'invitationtotuscany.com'. Then I started doing the same in Provence, and in the italian lakes, so i had further sites called invitationtoprovence.com and invitationtotheitalianlakes.com. But maintaining them was awkward and I wanted to have one site. So I put them all onto invitationto.com and did 301s from the old domains and sites. Now I'd dropped off organic search results and I've also realised that invitationto.com is far less clear as a business address. My inclination is to go back to invitationtotuscany.com - Tuscany is still 80% of our business and have the other areas in there too - optimised for SEO for Provence etc. I'm being told its a really bad idea to change domain, 301 the old one, and then revert to the original domain. But I'm suffering anyway, so I wonder if I sjhouldn't just bite the bullet. A lot of my old good backlinks still point to invitationtotuscany.com (BBC, Sunday Times, etc) and the DA is 33 against 22 on the new one.. All help gratefully received! : )

If I sell custom sticker products and have similar titles, is it a problem?
Hi, We're running a rather new website at www.redrockdecals.com and we sell mainly sticker products. I would just like to clarify on something that is bugging me and I just can't go forward with other products until I know the answers. I'd appreciate the help so much. We sell for example license plate products for different European countries. I have figured out the best title for the page would be for example "Custom Catalonia License Plate" and the primary keyword in this is Catalonia license plate since that's what actually gets some searches from Google and therefore I have used that without the word "custom" in the product description text. I guess it's a good idea to write totally different description texts for all of these license plate pages so that's what I've been doing. Now the question is - does google accept the fact that I have different product titles like Custom Catalonia License Plate, Custom Germany License Plate etc so just the country name differs on all of these pages? Or should I play around with the titles and word orders also? There is one part on the product page where we describe for example the temperature ranges and other specifications about the sticker material as you can see here: http://www.redrockdecals.com/custom-slovakia-license-plate Is it ok to copy-paste that text to all of the pages if the short descriptions on top of the product page are different?

Site Map Problems or Are They?
According to webmaster tools my Sitemap contains urls which are blocked by robots.txt Our site map is generically generated and encompasses all web pages, whether I have excluded them using the robots.txt file As far as I am aware this has never been an issue until recently. Is this hurting my rankings and how do I fix it? Secondly, webmaster tools says there is over 5,000 error/warnings on my site map. But site map is only 1,400 or so pages submitted. How do I see what is going on?

How long to reverse the benefits/problems of a rel=canonical
If this wasn't so serious an issue it would be funny.... Long store cut short, a client had a penalty on their website so they decided to stop using the .com and use the .co.uk instead. They got the .com removed from Google using webmaster tools (it had to be as it was ranking for a trade mark they didn't own and there are legal arguments about it) They launched a brand new website and placed it on both domains with all seo being done on the .co.uk. The web developer was then meant to put the rel=canonical on the .com pointing to the .co.uk (maybe not needed at all thinking about it, if they had deindexed the site anyway). However he managed to rel=canonical from the good .co.,uk to the ,com domain! Maybe I should have noticed it earlier but you shouldn't have to double check others' work! I noticed it today after a good 6 weeks or so. We are having a nightmare to rank the .co.uk for terms which should be pretty easy to rank for given it's a decent domain. Would people say that the rel=canonical back to the .com has harmed the co.uk and is harming with while the tag remains in place? I'm off the opinion that it's basically telling google that the co.uk domain is a copy of the .com so go rank that instead. If so, how quickly after removing this tag would people expect any issues caused by it's placement to vanish? Thanks for any views on this. I've now the fun job of double checking all the coding done by that web developer on other sites!

SEO problem if homepage is 2 folders deep?
We are currently looking at a site for a client, where instead of featuring standard file structure, every folder is being buried two folders deep by the CMS. So the homepage is: www.domain.com.au/folder/folder And a subpage is: www.domain.com.au/folder/folder/subpage Is this necessarily and SEO problem? Will it be positive for rankings to pull out the two redundant folders? Any insights are appreciated! Cheers

Slash at end of URL causing Google crawler problems
Hello, We are having some problems with a few of our pages being crawled by Google and it looks like the slash at the end of the URL is causing the problem. Would appreciate any pointers on this. We have a redirect in place that redirects the "no slash" URL to the "slash" URL for all pages. The obvious solution would be to try turning this off, however, we're unable to figure our where this redirect is coming from. There doesn't appear to be an instruction in our .htaccess file doing this, and we've also tried using "DirectorySlash Off" in the .htaccess file, but that doesn't work either. (if it makes a difference it is a 302 redirect doing this, not a 301) If we can't get the above to work, then the other solution would be to somehow reconfigure the page so that it is recognizable with the slash at the end by Google. However, we're not sure how this would be done. I think the quickest solution would be to turn off the "add slash" redirect. Any ideas on where this command might be hiding, and how to turn it off would be greatly appreciated. Or any tips from people who have had similar crawl problems with google and any workarounds would be great! Thanks!

Will using hidden divs cause me problems?
The developers want to use hidden divs to display links to each page of our photo gallery from the first page to Google but only previous and next buttons to users. Will this be a problem? Is it the best solution?
