The best way to spend 4 hours/day on offsite SEO?
-
I have an assistant who is able to do 4 hrs of SEO work for me every day. I don't have much onsite SEO work for him to do, and he's not skilled for social media management, so I'm thinking the best thing to have him do is manual link building.
So far I've had him create a spreadsheet of more than 1,000 blogs and directories that relate to the subject matter of our websites, and had him include the domain authority of each and if they use the "nofollow" attribute on their links.
Next I will have him start adding comments/submissions that include links back to our sites, starting with the highest DA sties and ones without the "nofollow" attributes.
Do you agree this is the best way to have him spend his time? Are there other tasks you would highly recommend?

I do have a paid membership, but I don't know where the list of directories is. Can you tell me?
Also, isn't looking at the domain authority of a directory a good way to tell if it's good?
-
BIG question Ryan, but if I cut all the crap the result would be something like this…
Some directories are really good while others are really bad so if you really know what good directories are go for it but if you don’t then don’t do the wild guess kind of a thing or judge the quality by the website’s layout!
SEOmoz have bunch of good directories in their list so you can go though the full list within your paid SEOmoz account see if you can go with those….

Thank you very much. I found your answers really helpful, Moosa and Alice. I definitely understand your advice not to engage in spammy link building on blogs. But what about directories?
There are a bunch of directories out there -- some free, some quite expensive. Is submitting our websites to all of those directories considered spammy by penguin? Can submission to some directories by harmful? How do we know which ones are good?

I would spend $1000 to have a local photographer coach your employee on taking great photos for your website. Then with advice from photographer spend $1000 on a good digital camera.
Then set the employee to work taking great photos for your website.
After that I would get graphics program coaching and a graphics program.

Hi Ryan, I agree with Moosa here. Thoughtful and valuable comment posting can help you to gain authority among niche audiences, but adding your URL before you've earned this authority is quite spammy and might get you penalised by Google. If I had an extra four hours a day for SEO, I would spend:
- 30 minutes - Commenting and interacting with influential bloggers and communities in my niche
- 30 minutes - Keyword/trend research
- 2 hours - Content creation around these trends and keywords
- 1 hour - Promoting that content and managing social media profiles. Even if your assistant isn't skilled is social media management, it shouldn't take too long to get him up to speed.
Content creation and promotion is the best and most sustainable way to earn links, if that's what your primarily concerned about.
Good luck!

I think this is one of the best ways to get your website kicked hard by penguin... To be really honest i can say NO to your idea!
I guess if a guy can work for you 4 hours a day and you want him to do quality link building for you then you should tell him to find link opportunities for you instead of blogs and forums that offer do follow link...
- Tell him to find the website that allow guest posting and are related to your niche.
- Tell him to find websites that are link to broken links of any of the website
- Tell him to email them and request links from them
- Tell him to search the image that you are using on your website to see who else are using it to ask link from them...
And this way you will be able to build a legitimate link profile instead of spammy link building that usually starts with do follow blog commenting...

Are SEO fundamentals accurate or real?
Hi I've been studying about seo for quite a good time. I have learned about linking building, on page optimization, and so on but I in the real word all these fundamentals seems not be followed but google's algorithm and here is an example. On google.com.br (brazilian google) I'm trying to rank for the main keyword "airsoft" and its variation for the website www.qgairsoft.com.br. But the the top 1 os SERP is: http://lojaairsoft.com.br/index.php But this website doesn't follow almost any seo advice: 1. It has almost no backlinks at all 2. It has no good content (both on pages and doesn't have a blog) 3. url's are not user friendly 4. It doesn't have a mobile website 5. It has almost no presence on social media, with almost no interaction 6. It doesn't have H1 7. I doesnt have any "canonical" set 8. It has a lower DA 9. It has a lower PA 10. Moz metrics are lower 11. It is not as old as my target website... 12. .. I think you got the point. And dispite all that the website do better than my website and also better then other websites with theoretically better 'seo'. What is wrong? What I am missing? Does all these principals really matter for ranking?

SEO in multiple languages
I'm doing SEO for an apartment rental web-site. We have one web-site for each destination. And for some (popular) destinations we have a separate domain for some languages. For instance: http://www.barcelonacheckin.com/en for English and http://www.barcelonacheckin.com/fr for French In another destination we have http://costabrava-ok-apartment.com/en for English and http://www.location-costabrava.fr/ for French. We have good result with the separate domains for languages. But I'm facing two problems: We do not get any progress in the ranks in English in any Web-site There's a lot written about SEO in English and there are many opportunities to build relevant links. But we are out of sources for eg. French. Our SEO routine exists of participating in forums on famous travel web-sites, guest post exchange with our blogs, link exchange and presence in Social media. Can anybody give us some suggestions?

Best Way To Set Up Link Structure
I have set up each page on my site to be a landing page as it were . Employing a couple of concepts one of which being that I do not want the user to browse away from the page to a page that has no contact form on it . I would in fact prefer as most landing page companies seem to agree that the user stay on the page where they land and contact me through the form . I currently have a page called my domain/links that displays a superfish Joomla menu that I have not styled or done anything with really because I only use it to access the pages while editing and have no real intention of a user Actually finding the page . I intend on eventually deleting it . Most of the pages on the site are directed towards geographical cities in the surrounding area . The pages are not duplicate content obviously but they are all speaking pretty much the same message to my audience . Hey this company does electrical work in your town . I have no problem with putting a text link menu at the bottom of the page before the footer with all of the pages on the site . However this being a content management site I could simply put this at the bottom of every page . Should I do this ? Or should I put this only on the home page and then have all the other pages link back to the homepage . Or should I do a hybrid of this and put them all on the home page and then on the other pages put Four or five links to different services that we do such as recessed lighting , under cabinet lighting , get a quote . Pages such as this that I actually want the user to possibly browse to Such as in a traditional website model . I am a firm believer that keeping the person on this page Leads to higher conversions . However visually speaking the opportunity to fill out the form is there on every page . There are many things to consider so I would like a few professional opinions . Thanks ! PS Merchant circle has been getting some negative press lately . I have a blog there that has a great page ranking . Previously I was copying a version of my text links and posting it at the bottom of my blogs . Is merchant circle still in good staining and a good bet for links ? opinions comments thank you !

Do you think it's a good idea to try to find synergy between clients for blog posts/citations/links, or should you keep clients away from each other?
Say you have for example three (in this case) clients, and: Client A sells red widgets Client B is a doctor Client C sellls blue widgets With some research, you find that: Red widgets (A) can make the process of blue widget creation (C) even more effective. Red widgets (A) can protect you from harmful things that doctors (B) are qualified to recommend that you stay away from. Furthermore, there are things that doctors (B) recommend that you do in order to maximize the benefits of red widgets (A) Blue widgets (C) carry with them certain potential health risks, which according to doctors (B) can be minimized using the following means Sometimes blue widgets (C) can be used to effectively repair red widget (A) factories ...and so forth. Sure you're really writing these articles to generate links and exchange authority, and frankly you started with "how can I find synergy between these clients?" rather than a with a great article subject that needed a citation which luckily happened to be another client, but the citations are legitimate and the clients are qualified to speak on the subjects where their expertise and interests overlap. Would you consider going ahead with this? Does anyone have any experience doing it? I could see potential pitfalls if clients were to interact with each other, but keeping yourself as the intermediary might well work and overall it seems like a decent way to grab low-hanging fruit as they say. What do you guys think?

Is there a way to leverage paid advertisements placed in industry specific publications to get SEO benefits?
Is there a way to leverage paid advertisements placed in industry specific publications to get SEO benefits? I am looking to advertise in publications like trade journals or magazines, but want to also reap SEO benefits by getting a link. So I am avoiding buying banner ads, but instead trying to find opportunities for links from editorial mentions, quality article or editorial submissions, etc. Advice on the link proposition, or best way to approach editors, please? Many of these publications are traditional print publications, and their sites are really seo'd. Thanks.
