Does redesigning a website affects SEO results
-
We have a website and we are getting good traffic to it. Its a travel related domain registered many years back. Now its ranking high for most of the potential keywords even if it is not at all SEO friendly (Domain is an exact match keyword). We are planning to redesign it. Will that affect the SEO Ranking?
We need to ask some more doubts:
1. When redesigning we are planning to change the inner page URL. So it it wise
to redirect (301) old URL to the new URL? Old url will not be there after redesigning. But its currently having page ranks.
2. Can we redirect more than one old url to a single new page?
3. Google new updates said "they will be going to diminish the exact match results domains". Does that updates affects us?
4. Any more suggestions for the redesigning?
-
I have recent experience with a very similar situation. We decided to go ahead and change the entire look of the site and a lot of the content, but we kept the same URL structure. For one of the main keywords we experienced the following:
Google: We fell from first page to fourth page over a period of 4 months. We are just now starting to see an uptick in rankings and have climbed back to the 3rd page.
Bing: We climbed from the third page to the bottom of the 1st page over a period of 3 months.
Part of the redesign was to focus our on page optimization results.
In answer to your 4 questions:
1. Redirect anything that won't be there for sure. You don't want people clicking an old link just to find a 404 dead site.
2. Yes you can redirect more than one old url to a single new page, but make sure it is a logical redirect and is helpful to the user. Don't just do it for fun.
3. Like Joram said, "You'll have to wait and see"
4. Don't redesign just because you are tired of the look. Too many web site owners look at their website everyday and get tired of the look when it is a perfectly fine site. Have a purpose for redesigning that includes something along the lines of, "This redesign will help my visitors because...."

Would it also be important to keep the content similar to maintain SEO and then change it slowly to prevent a drop?

My 2 cents:
First of all with any major redesign there will be a lot of changes on the rankings side: those could be positive or negative or a mix of course.
You really need to plan everything with extra care especially if you rank already ...
A good advice is allways to do everthing step by step. That measn: change the design and don't touch the url structure. Change the design but don't inject new pages or delete old ones.
As soon as teh dust is settled with teh design change you can move forward and remove / add new pages and wait again. When everthing is done you can start the redesign of the url structure but again step by step.
In this way you will be able to track and monitor all changes and be able to go back if something bad really happens.
As for the url change - it's a golden rule not to touch those on an existing domain unless it's really really imperative tod o so.
With any url change, even if 301 are implemente correctly you still face a big possibile drop in rankings !
Been there - done that - got burned.
To stay safe, make and bring on the table a contingency plan just in case.
Overview to your questions:
1. When redesigning we are planning to change the inner page URL. So it it wise
to redirect (301) old URL to the new URL? Old url will not be there after redesigning. But its currently having page ranks.
** Even with 301 redirects the site will suffer from the url change. It dosen't mean you don't have to do it but just plan it with care and only if it's really really important to move with the change.
2. Can we redirect more than one old url to a single new page?
** Yes.
3. Google new updates said "they will be going to diminish the exact match results domains". Does that updates affects us?
** Doy ou have an EMD and target the keyword that is in the domain ?
4. Any more suggestions for the redesigning?
** Do everything step by step - build a road map / project plan with the changes- don't dive in live there's no tomorrow as you can run into some serious problems.
Everything can be done and usually a redesign is more then welcomed - especially if it's done from an UX point of view. Do plan however everything with extra care.

Hi,
To start with: Yes, your redesign it going to affect your rankings. The question is how it's going to change.
Changing your url structure will definitely have quite an impact on your rankings. It's wise to read some more information about the effect of the url structure on SEO. Maybe this is a good one to start with: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/basics-of-search-engine-friendly-design-and-development
If the old url's won't be accesible any longer you should definitely redirect to the new url's. It is possible to redirect more of your old url's to one new url. After the change in your url structure it might take a while before Google has indexed all your new url's and it's very likely that you'll see a fluctuation in your rankings.
About Google's 'EMD update": You'll have to see over time how that update affects your site.
At least make sure all content is accesible on the new site and don't remove too many internal links to well ranking pages. There are tons of other do's and don't for redesigning your site. I think you can find some very important ones in this SEOmoz guide.
Good luck!

International Websites - Hosting, Domain Names, & Configuration
What is the best way to configure a website that targets a number of countries and languages around the world? For example, Apple has websites optimized for just about every country and language in the world (see: https://www.apple.com/choose-country-region/). When you choose the UK it takes you to: https://www.apple.com/uk/ When you choose China it take you to: https://www.apple.com/cn/ Etc. When you go to apple.co.uk it forwards you to the UK version of the website. The same is true for apple.cn. Is this the ideal way to set it up? I have also seen websites that have each version of the website on its own TLD such as exampleBrand.co.uk and exampleBrand.cn - in this example they don't forward to the .com. My concern with Apple's solution is SEO and hosting. Do consumers favor seeing their country's TLD in search results over exampleBrand.com/uk? For hosting, shouldn't the mainland China version of the website be hosted in China? Is it possible to just host a folder of a website in a certain country such as the cn folder for China? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I was unable to find much info on this.

Seo and CSS media queries
Hello to all participants! I'm starting on responsive design with css media queries and I was wondering if hidding content can, in this case, can also be bad for seo? I know that hidding content is bad (eg. display: none;), but is it also like that with responsive design or does Google see it other way? If I have a news column with title, image and text for 1024px and hide the text and image leaving just the title for 768px, or smaller, will Google consider this black hat and will it be bad for seo? are there any articles I can read about this subject, and other similar subjects? sorry for my english 🙂 thanks

Drupal SEO - Concerns about cloaking
It appears that core Drupal includes a CSS style that automatically generates an tag for any* or > ## Main menu This uses the CSS to create a 1px1px header with that text that is absolutely positioned in the top left hand corner. Essentially, hidden and unreadable to humans and presumably also useless to even screen readers. There is some discussion of the reasoning for including this functionality as standard here: [http://drupal.org/node/1392510](http://drupal.org/node/1392510 "http://drupal.org/node/1392510") I'm not convinced of its use/validity/helpfulness from an SEO perspective so there's a few questions that arise out of this. 1. Is there a valid non-SEO reason for leaving this as the default rather than giving ourselves full control over our ## tags? 2. Could this be seen as cloaking by creating hidden/invisible elements that are used by the search engines as ranking factors? Update: http://www.seobythesea.com/2013/03/google-invisible-text-hidden-links/ Google's latest patent appears to deal with this topic. The patent document even makes explicit reference to the practice of hiding text in ## tags that are invisible to users and are not proper headings. Anyone have any thoughts on what SEOs using Drupal should be doing about this?

What is your mobile website strategy?
Do you have one where you deliver the same content to the desktop (rich user experience) as well as mobile websites? In our case we provide content to www.domain.com, m.domain.com (for smart phones not using our native apps) and mo.domain.com (for older feature phones). We found that in some instances Google favours the indexing of our mobile content over our desktop site and we have now started pointing canonical content to our desktop site (i.e. to www.domain.com). Possible downside is that Google might not present desktop indexed content on mobile devices. This is not really a big issue, as currently Google presents mobile content for desktop searches. A better approach would have been responsive design, but we feel that dedicated apps will rule the mobile device space and desktop-websites will evolve to allow content to be displayed on all devices (we consider our m.domain.com and mo.domain.com stop-gaps to overcome legacy device issues and bandwidth limitations). What is your mobile device strategy with regards to SEO?

Site redesign and links?
I have a real estate website. On my sidebar I have about 16 links to pages on various neighborhoods. I templated my site using dream weaver so the same sidebar and links are on every page. I'm thinking of redesigning the sidebar and having one link that will take visitors to a page where all the neighborhood links will be and then from there visitors can choose whichever link to go to a specific neighborhood info page. I am doing this to clear space on my side bar for other content and links. What impact would this have on my home page? The website is bronxpad.com if anyone wants to check it out and provide feedback.

Wordpress/ Insert Tables/ SEO
I'm using Wordpress to create websites and blogs. I have limited (non-existent) HTML Coding knowledge. I'm looking to insert tables within my pages with information. Inside of these tables I want certain names to link to another page with more specific information about that name. I'm using a plugin called "WP Tables Reloaded" it simple helps you to create aesthetically pleasing tables without needing to know HTML Code or CSS. The issue is... when you create this table and insert it to the post, the only thing that shows on the sites back-end page is the table I.D. and the only thing that shows in the HTML is the tables I.D. It looks like this... [table id=2 /] I don't think search engines will be able to crawl this table, thus I won't be receiving any credit for the links being used within the table. Am I right about this?

Do you have an SEO 'plugin' recommendation for SharePoint 2007?
I'm not a programmer and our 200+ person company isn't going to change their CMS just because I asked them nicely. Do you know of any SEO plugin I can use on SharePoint 2007? I just don't want to have to keep going into each of 110 websites time after time.
