Need help on redirects and which domain to make my main
-
Hi there i have at the moment abcecigs.com as my main domain for my electronic cigarette company, I have now aquired abcelectroniccigarettes.co.uk and abcelectroniccigarettes.com which one would be best for my main domain?
i will be having mostly UK customers to keep postal cost down ect, what would be the best way to go about having my main domian changed to one of the better electroniccigarettes.co.uk or .com domains, and still have abcecigs.com used as I have a few links posted to there.
Thanks alot
-
Place a 301 redirect on each of those domains pointing at your new abcelectroniccigarettes.co.uk.

Hi matt thanks for the reply really appreciate it.
So I think im going to copy all content and change the hard coded links. Once I have done this what exactly should I do to the existing abcecigs.com and the other .com domain to keep the juice ect.
Thanks
-
Unfortunately I think there are only two options redo all your content or go through your old content updating the hard coded links and then upload this with filezilla to your new domain - which would be quicker than redoing everything.

Hi carlos yes I have already bought the domains, i bought them from 123 reg but my site is hosted on arhoster will this be a problem?
Im finding it tricky as to what I do, I would like to have the .co.uk as my main domain, and the 2 .com's pointing to it,
my site as it stands has the abcecigs.com domain and I have hardcoded links included on the site, what would be the best way of doing the swap
thanks
ps my server uses cpanel

Hy guys sorry for the delay in response my internet has been down
I will be using the abcelectroniccigarettes.co.uk domain as my main domain, what is the best way to do this, i was originally going to copy all files from abcecigs.com to new domain using filezilla but as Matt said that will take for ever as i have many hard coded links.
What way would you guys recommend i do it
thanks for all your help

Well if you are going to target specific European countries I would look at creating content specific to them and targeting them. I would in this case consider setting up subfolders on your new .com domain such as /uk, /de, etc and putting the specific country contents in them. You don't need individual country code domains for each.
If you setup your new site on the new domain yes you could copy all your webpages via ftp from your old domain to your new domain, however you would need to look at your navigation and internal links because if any of these are hard coded to your old domain such as abcecigs,com/aboutus.html then you will need to change it to your new domain.
When you have a 301 redirect in place you should go into Google Webmaster Tools on your old domain and tell it that this website has moved and select your new address.

Hi thanks for the quick reply wow!! I would like customers from other European companies aswell as postal cost wouldn't be that much , postal to us Asia ect would be costly! Would it be good to build a brand new site for the eu? ie abcelectroniccigarettes.sl ect or will the .com or . Uk surffice? So for the uk I need to copy all content from abcecigs.com to the abcelectroniccigarettes.co.uk using FileZilla then do a 301 redirect form abcecigs.com and tell google I have redirected it? Sorry for a lot of questions you guys are a real help

Hi,
I thought you had already registered the domains?
If you have already bought the domains, all you need to do is add the domain to your Cpanel using the "addon domains" option. (if you bought the domains with a different registrar to your hosting provider you will need to change the nameservers)
To redirect your old site to the new, use an .htaccess file. http://www.search-friendly-web-design.com/general/55-301-redirect-each-page-of-site-to-new-domain-address
-
Well if you are mainly targeting the UK I would setup a 301 redirect from abcecigs.com to abcelectroniccigarettes.co.uk and I would also setup up a redirect from the abcelectroniccigarettes.com to the .co.uk.
However you could consider building your new site on abcelectroniccigarettes.com and putting the different countries that you are targeting in subfolders such as abcelectroniccigarettes.com/uk and putting a 301 redirect from abcelectroniccigarettes.co.uk to abcelectroniccigarettes.com/uk. You would also want to 301 redirect abcecigs.com to abcelectroniccigarettes.com. This all depends on the fact of whether you want to target international customers properly? If not I would go with something like my first suggestion.
Remember a 301 redirect passes the majority of your link juice from your old domain to the new one it is redirected to as it is a permanent redirect.
-
Hi carlos thanks so much for your help. Do i do the 301 redirect in cpanel? I find redirects tricky. thanks
also do i use the addon domains in cpanel to register the .co.uk domain name?
thanks
-
If you want to rank in Google UK I'd use the .co.uk domain, not only will it help you rank quicker but customers tend to trust local TLDs over .coms when it comes to purchasing online.
To move your site:
-
301 redirect all your pages to the respective pages on the .co.uk domain to make sure all the link juice and authority is passed to the new domain
-
Inform Google via Webmaster Tools that you have moved your website to a new domain

Switch to naked domain that has higher page authority
Brilliant Moz community! I just started here and find it so helpful and am confident that I can get an answer to this. Our domain is currently https://www.example.com. I have been wanting to move to https://example.com just for a cleaner URL. To my surprise, https://example.com has the same DA but a significantly higher page authority than our current https://www.example.com. Of course my immediate reaction is to 301 to the https://example.com but I wanted to get some advice and anything we should consider before doing this. My other question would be - how is this possible? I don't remember that we ever used that domain but we also had some rather bad developers a couple of years back. Thank you so much in advance!

Help! Odd SERP results on two branded terms.
We have had the ODDEST thing happen to our Branded search. Last week we started seeing our Women’s subdomain (women.duluthtrading.com) outranking our main Duluth Trading domain (duluthtrading.com) on searches for “duluth trading co” and “duluth trading company”. Sample of odd results page: http://screencast.com/t/cKgkaYc1 As you can see- our Women's sub domain is ranking #1 then our main domain, THEN what used to be our organic site links are now listing 3-6. If you search for "duluth trading" though, you will get the typically results page: http://screencast.com/t/qGLDWiM0f We have been trying to figure out how or why this has happened. Our website went out for 30 minutes on January 4th. We thought maybe that is what happened but it has now been 7 days. Any help or suggestions would be great!

Domain authority vs indexed pages
Hello, There are many articles and from our personal experience we can say that you can rank a page without backlinks with high DA but we cant figure out if DA of domain help to rank as the link juice ( so the link juice going from home page thru all pages to specific page) or it will rank a page even if its not linked in any way from homepage or any other pages and even if it not linked in any way from other pages and still ranks just because of high DA, does that DA value will spread even above all indexed pages if you have lets say 100,000 pages, i mean if domain has 100 indexed pages and DA of 50 and another domain has 100,000 and DA of 100, if both pages are the same on those domains and have no backlinks to it from my understanding page on domain with 100 indexed pages and DA of 50 suppose to rank higher ? Please share what you think

No Domain Link In Press Release, What About Yelp?
Hi Moz, I understand that using a PR for SEO benefit is old-school, black hat, and largely outlawed by Google. We are simply trying to get our name pushed further into the local market, i.e., using a press release for it's natural intention. Our company offers free quotes through our site and the scheduling of jobs with new clients is largely done online. I think it seems silly NOT to have a link to our URL in the press release, but rather than poke Google, we're fine omitting it. However, would linking our Yelp near the end be a big deal? Yelp no-follows their URLs back to the company site so there isn't a risk with pumping up a support link through PR and we can provide SOME clickable link to our information. Thoughts?

Organic fluctuations after domain migration ?
I'm working on the rebranding of an ecommerce site We're going to do a domain migration and since half of the current traffic is coming from organic searches I'd like to estimate possible fluctuations on this channel. **Do you have any rebranding experience? or can suggest good case studies on this? ** (Technically speaking we know the protocol and also on the communication/strategy side we're covered.. we just need an estimate of the organic drop.. in the worst case scenario)

Will new site have any effect on main site ?
Hi, We have a successful ecommerce site at www.printerbase.co.uk but we are now branching out and will soon be offering services which we are going to do through a different website with a possible URL of something like www.printerbasesolutions.co.uk so my question is, will having two websites containing the word printerbase have any negative effect on the ranking of www.printerbase.co.uk or would we be better having a completely different URL? The new site is not going to have any ecommerce functionality it is going to be more about offering the services we can give to clients and encouraging them to get in contact with us. Thanks BigJoe

UGC Brainstorming - Need Some Help!
Hi All, I'm helping a client build an e-commerce store from the ground up, which sells class rings to high school students. Not a novel product, but they have a nice URL - WearMyStory.com, and are thinking through creative ways to reach the market by letting users share their stories with UGC. I have some ideas, but could use some help. I think using video/picture/essay contests for students to share their stories is a great way to get buzz and grow socially. What I don't know is how to capture all of this great UGC for SEO purposes. Do you know of any great sites with brilliant UGC strategies (outside of reviews, etc.)? Do you have any examples of software companies who help you leverage the UGC into SEO gold? I'm trying to find great examples of frameworks where sites are leveraging the UGC. The other wall I am hitting is how to create a community when it is simply a one time purchase e-commerce product. If a customer buys a ring (or any product for that matter), what would keep them coming back to the site? Any good examples out there that you can think of? Thanks!

Domain Name Masking Redirect for Brandname to Keyworded Domain
Hi mozzers I have 2 domain names, brandname.com and keywordname.com and but have a question related to web vs print marketing on deciding which domain to use or redirect. We already have established unique content first on the Keywordname.com site over the last 6 months and it has started to climb well in google rankings. But now we'd like to do some print advertising and think it would make more sense to use Brandname.com when refering to our website. So the 2 question are: Should I 301 redirect brand.com to keyword.com (preferred as all content and rankings on keyword.com) or vice versa, as I realize I can only have one site to avoid duplicate content. And is it possible to use domain name masking on brand.com if redirecting to keyword.com to avoid risking our rankings, or is masking bad for seo? Thanks!
