Video Hosting Question - host on website via wistia type solution or upload to youtube and embed?
-
I have a client that owns a Video production company. They have a lot of video examples of all their different types of services i.e. commercial production, TV broadcast production, business videos, training videos, etc.
Where should I host their portfolio of videos, should I:
A: Use a paid video hosting solution like wistia
B. Upload to youtube or vimeo and embed to my own site
The only videos titles with keywords that I could see bringing any type of conversions for their business would be their demo reels, for example: "Atlanta Corporate Video Production Demo Reel." The other videos would be the name of the video "Court TV: Cop On Trial For Killing Wife" and therefore wouldn't bring the kind of visitors that are searching for a video production service. This is why I'm curious about what the best hosting option is.
Any advice would be a great help.

Don't think this is a suitable alternative to securely hosting if you want rich snippets - because it isn't. While Yoasts plugin will allow you to get the rich snippet - it won't stop YouTube outranking you for your own video and also only works with a bit of a hack that YT may turn off at any time.
-
It ultimately depends on what you want to achieve - from both a business and marketing perspective.
If you want video rich snippets and conversions - use a third party solution like Wistia.
If you're trying to improve brand awareness through social engagement, use YouTube.
As it's essentially a show reel and you're trying to get people to come to the website in order to learn about the company - i would suggest using Wistia and focussing on rankings and conversions. The content won't do very well on YouTube, so you have little to gain by putting it there.
For a more in-depth explanation, i have written about the whole subject here www.seomoz.org/blog/hosting-and-embedding-for-video-seo and this advice still stands.

- You Tube - It has a larger audience
- Yoast's new Video Plugin (if using Wordpress) - Embed the youtube video on your site, the plugin creates the video sitemap and rich data (SERP display image) for you.

Check out this blog it may be of some help. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/hosting-and-embedding-for-video-seo I'm using jwplayer hosting myself; a couple of YouTube embeds; and now experimenting with Bits On The Run so I can see if I get any rich snippets and so I can see some analytics.

I went through the same problem as you. I went for the Youtube option, embedded 3 videos onto my site and used the old object code so that my videos would get indexed. It took ages for Google to even acknowledge them, never mind show them on the SERP.
I changed to Wistia, using the free option of 3 videos (it might be 5?) and within less than a week, my videos were returning in the SERP linking to the correct page on my site. My site is also listed for the same page on the same SERP. So in effect, 2 results for my one page on the first page of Google.
My good experience!

Since you are just starting with a Video SEO project, I would strongly encourage you to go the route of a service like Wistia. I just wrote a blog post on the whole subject located here: http://www.danatanseo.com/2012/09/creating-video-seo-strategy-is-hard-but.html There are references to other helpful resources in the post too.

What is the best SEO friendly way to combine two websites.
I have two websites, eg: widgets.com - sells expensive widgets as gifts everydaywidgets.com - sells cheap widgets for everyday use. I would like to combine them both under the widgets.com domain name, because its easier to run the SEO campaign for one rather than two. But i still want two different product collections, and two different sites. widgets.com is by far the larger of the two sites so my current thought is to have that the main landing site, and have a button at the top to take the user to widgets.com/everydaywidgets where they have a similar but different site, and different products. I can set this all up no problem with the correct 301 redirects from everydaywidgets.com, but is it SEO friendly? Does anyone know of a real world example of a business doing this? Cheers

Two companies merging into a new website. How to merge two existing websites into a brand new website and preserve search rankings.
Brand A and Brand B are merging to form Brand C. Brand A has a great search presence (prominent rankings, answer boxes, and impressive organic traffic). Brand B has a good reputation in real life but their web presence was extremely weak (we've been helping with that over the past few months and it is improving). What are the steps we need to take? The previous domains from Brand A and Brand B are going away and we need to promote the newly minted Brand C website. This Q/A summarizes what we want to do but with one exception: They only discuss merging Brand A into BRand B and there is no Brand C.

Viral Video :Best use - What to do with it?
So I was told that I have video that should be the next "viral video" in a particular vertical market. (It is an animal) Anyway I have 4 offers from different companies now that want to market it for me. Junkin Media, Rumble.com, Newsflare and Storyful. Junkin wants ownership in perpetuity the other groups want for 1 year to market to news agencies. They are offering 60/40 revenue split with me getting 60. plus an extra $1 per thousand hits on the video. Supposedly they will market it to for me to news agencies etc. Anyway I was wondering if it would work best for me to market it myself and embed my business website link in the video for link juice on my home page. Then I can post the video in various places and the link strength might help my domain or page authority. Any suggestions about viral video use? Boo

Making the most from a Press Release being featured on news websites
We have recently sent out a press release to targeted publications and have been lucky enough to be featured on a hand full of quality news websites which all feature links to our main URL. A minor draw back is some of the sites have just used the press release with minimal changes so we are a tiny bit worried about duplicate content issues but the sites are all high quality with a Domain Authority of 65+. Anyway I am wondering how best to capitalise on these. A few ideas I have:- 1. Go to our Company Google Plus page and +1 them. 2. Go to our Twitter profile and favourite the "tweets" that have been sent out mentioning each article. 3. Go to our Facebook page and "Like" the articles on each of the sites. 4. Setup a Squidoo page called "My Company featured around the internet" and link to the news pages. 5. Setup a Tumblr page called " MY Company featured around the internet" and link to the news pages. We are not sure if featured the links/urls on our "Press" section will undermine any benefit of link juice - we were thinking of doing a PDF of the pages and hosting the PDF on our site.

High authority brand expanding product line, domain question
Hi MOZers, I've been given a handy little domain puzzle to deal with and would love insight from the community. Here's the situation: We're retailers of one specific, big, nationally known product. Let's pretend it's the Snuggee (IT'S NOT). People search for it and buy it from our site, or from Amazon or other retailers that we distribute it to. We're about to expand to carry a bunch of related, but different products - so from a one-product brand to 5 or 6 different items, relating to different keyword searches. Imagine Snuggee people want to start selling a whole bunch of products that solve the same needs of warming the front of your body and making you look silly. The owners want to change the main domain from [specific product] to [name similar to specific product, but is more general]. What concerns me is how to handle the fame of the branded product in terms of domain names. Current domain, based on that product, has a ton of links and a decent age. Owners are thinking to redirect everything to fresh new unestablished domain. While I know 301s will pass most link value, it will also be a home page that will be about a bunch of products - not just that main known one. In fact, we're considering making a URL for each product as landing page, of which old famous product would be one of 5 or 6 pages. Two main options we're considering right now: Keep old domain as a doorway page featuring just old product, with same look and feel, and from which any links would point to the new domain. Try to keep this as ranking for top result for this search, which should be easy. Unify everything under new domain, with old product being featured on a separate page / subdirectory. Hope that new home page still can rank pretty well for our old product, even though it will be talking about other products now as well. What we'd stand to lose would be the SERP for old products featuring too many big box retailers that sell our stuff and take a chunk out of our margins. The goal is to help us become known for many things, while still being always the best search result for what we're already known for. Which of those two options seem best, or is there another I'm missing altogether? Thank you!
