Is something strange going on with Google last few days?? Seeing strange results for competitive keywords
-
I am seeing some very strange results for competitive keywords.
If I search on google.co.uk for "website design" which I feel is a pretty tough keyword. I see a site called http://www.techdesigns.co.uk/
If you go to the site its a laptop review site with no mention of website design on the site. They seem to be an Amazon Affiliate
They have 23,597 links saying website design but mostly from adult websites.
I have seen this on a few result related to SEO but dont want to mention any names in case we upset anyone on the forum.
How can they rank for such a competitive keyword without onpage? Surely Panda should have hit this site?
Why have they not been hit by Penguin so many adult links?
Sorry if this is anyones site on here I am not looking to get you banned or hit just stumps me why this site ranks.

Yes I am seeing some very strange results too.
This morning I did a search for "http timeout error" and got a list of results that had wikipedia at the top followed by over 50 results for Time-Out magazine, not a very helpful set of results.
Also since the last know updates I have notice a 40% or increase in the amout of organic traffic coming from Bing and Ask (e.g. gone up from 100 visits per day to 140 per day), has anyone else seen this?

I think I you look at anchor text ratio on inbounds it's quite penguin friendly. Not too weighted. A

They probably won't last. People will go from the Google search results pages to these sites and if they offer nothing of use return to the search results page. Google data will now show high bounce rate which will affect their ranking. It's a genuine indicator of usefulness IMO.

Yeah you will see some poor sites of old coming back.
But surely Panda update would hit your site so you do not rank for a competitive keyword such as "website design"
Its beyond me how you can rank for that phrase without any onpage or mentioning anything to do with the subject.

Not sure - but now that you can disallow links im sure we will start seeing link profiles that are nasty but are ranking due to the disallow tool

Should I target two pages for the same keyword, but two different intents?
When people type in a certain keywords in my industry space (animated video), they usually have one of two intents: some want to see videos (for inspiration or entertainment or whatever) and some want to hire a company. We have pages that meet each intent. Some "Best of..." blog posts for the crowd that want to see videos (that might be top-of-the-funnel prospects, potentially) and a landing page for the buying-intent people. I'm seeing each ranking page as essentially two, kept in proper balance to meet search intent by click-throughs. So I'm betting that my landing page won't cannibalize the "best of..." page. Is that the right way to see it, or not?

Old Spammy Backlinks but No Manual Penalty...No Results
We have taken over a site in which the client had unfortunately hired an SEO consultant who bought bad comment spam links. Webmaster Tools does not show a manual penalty of any kind but clearly this was bad practice from the former "SEO" consultant. I believe we have a good structure of the completely new website we have built for the client but I am not sure of the best way to reduce any negative fallout from the previous actions. I've read conflicting information about submitting disavow report to Google for the comment spam links. In some cases, I have read that it would be irrelevant since there is not a manual penalty. I am fairly certain rankings are being negatively effected from this action and looking for the best way to neutralize the algorithmic penalty. Not sure if this helps or not but I use GWMT "Download Latest Links" and see that the soonest Google discovered one of these links is 4/4/2013. Most of the links were generated some time during 2012. How do you even begin to try to reach out and have comment spam manually removed...when most of the sites that allowed the comment spam to begin with are spam sites themselves?

One keyword has dropped, everything else is ok, why?
Ok so this is what I got, 1 page ranks for about 5 different terms, all closely matching for example: Flower Pots, Flower Pot, Cheap Flower Pots, Buy Flower Pots. Flower Pot and Flower Pots are on page 2. Flower Pot stays where it is BUT Flower Pots drops out the rankings completely after being there for years. Could a blast of exact match anchor text at the term Flower Pots cause this? I would have thought the page would have been zapped rather then just one keyword. Any ideas?

Can Google ban for use of Press Releases?
Is it possible for Google to ban you if you are doing multiple press releases on a weekly basis? All content is unique and news worthy, following proper ratio density/links Thanks!

Branded vs non branded keyword question
I have been doing a lot of research about my competitors on open site explorer and have come to see that most of them are getting a high percentage of links from branded anchor text. It is almost to the point where they are not even using any keyword terms as anchor text. I have a few questions: 1. why are they doing this 2.. how are they ranking for keyword terms when I cannot find any anchor text in their link profile that reflects their target keywords. 3. is it better for me to focus on building branded anchor text keywords than to do exact match keyword terms especially after the panda update 4. if it is better for me to focus on branded anchor text only, how do i rank for keyword terms?

Is backlinkbuild.com considered against Google policy?
I guess it IS buying links, but I have read many reviews saying they are ok (Which might just be part of thier network of sites :)) It seems like cheating, but they say they do the leg work, that it's not just automatic junk links. Any experience with them? Thank you!
