How is it possible to 301 specific pages to a new domain?
-
The old site is small, only 100 pages or so, and about 10 of them are particularly useful. I would like to 301 those 10 pages to 10 similar pages on the new site, and also 301 the other 90 pages to the new site... the new site's home page, I suppose.
Does it make sense to do this and if so how?
I think if I simply 301 the whole of the old domain to the new one, the juice will be shared among the new site's page equally which is not what I want. I know where the htaccess file is and I can 301 a page within a domain but I'm at a loss with this. Thanks for any help.
EDIT:
I'm hoping for something like this:
old.com/page_1 >> new.com/page_A
old.com/page_2 >> new.com/page_B
... and 8 more of those
And then the other 90 pages:
old.com/Remaining pages >> new.com/index
-
Glad it helped and the explanation below is nicely done.
-
Thanks Matt, that put me on the right track. I have posted a full solution is you need it anytime.
-
SOLUTION:
Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine On
#redirect this type of url www.old.com/index.php?everything-after-the-question-mark to a new url
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^everything-after-the-question-mark$ RewriteRule ^index.php$ http://www.new.com/new-page? [L,R=301]
#change the above for every specific url with a query string that you want to send to a specific url
#for capturing the rest of the site's query string urls and sending them to a single page - the home page in this example:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(.*)$ RewriteRule ^index.php$ http://www.new.com? [L,R=301]
#www.old.com doesn't have a query string so needs its own 301:
Redirect 301 / http://www.new.com
-
I think the issue you are having is because you are redirecting a dynamic URL and this is what is causing the problem. There was Q&A on here regarding this ages ago I will try and find it and let you have the link - unless we have an expert that wants to step in..
Try adding a rewrite condition before a rewrite rule:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} route=product/product&product_id=51
-
For some reason it doesn't work. I've changed the fifth line below for posting here, but the four lines above it is the code that I used in the htaccess. Because it's a 1and1 server which use php4 as default, it has an extra line to use php 5, which the site has always had. The domain-to-domain 301 works ok with this extra line.
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine On
Redirect 301 /index.php?route=product/product&product_id=51 http://www.newdomain.com/new-page
-
try this below
Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on
Redirect 301 /oldpage.html http://www.newdomain.com/newpage.html ```
-
Thanks Matt
The domain-to-domain redirect works but the page-to-page doesn't, even when the page-to-page is the only instruction below "RewriteEngine on".
-
Hi - yeah place all your specific redirects first and then add you blanket redirect at the end.
-
Sorry Matt, that was a bad typo. I've changed that now... I meant 301 those 10 pages to 10 similar pages".
Thanks very much for the link. I might just have to test this with a dormant domain and see if it works, but my worry is that the command to redirect the whole domain will override the commands to redirect the individual pages.
RewriteEngine on
#I would have ten of these:
rewriterule ^index.phproute=product/product&product_id=52(.*)$ http://www.new.co.uk/products/new$1 [r=301,nc]
######## As I would prefer not to do the above for all 100 pages, I would need a way to redirect the remaining pages. I don't know if the following accomplishes this as it's simply a command to redirect the domain?
#######Options +FollowSymLinksRewriteEngine onRewriteRule (.*) http://www.new.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L]
-
Sorry my confusion - when you said "301 those 10 pages to 120 similar pages on the new site". Then your idea is correct it will be best to redirect your old page to a specific new one - I have done this successfully many times myself.
You can does this with your .htaccess - easiest way for you would be to use this:
http://www.webconfs.com/htaccess-redirect-generator.php
When using the tool you only need to initiate the rewrite engine once then just copy the last line for each url redirect:
include this only once:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
-
Hi Matt,
It will be one-to-one:
old.com/page_1 >> new.com/page_A
old.com/page_2 >> new.com/page_B
... and 8 more of those
And then the other 90 pages:
old.com/Remaining pages >> new.com/index
-
To me it doesn't make sense to redirect a page using a permanent redirect that tells the search engines the old page has moved to multiple new pages - the new page should only exist in one location from a duplicate content and link juice point of view. I think that would be an improper use of a 301 redirect. You could group pages and point the old page to the first page of each group.
Also note as far as I am aware this is not possible as a 301 redirect will send you to a single location not multiple when you type the old address, so you could point 10 pages at 120 other than creating 10 index pages which group those 120 and pointing one of the 10 original at each of them...

301 redirects and impact on page authority
I need to restructure a section of my website, changing some page titles and moving some pages to other sections. This will then change the URLs but the CMS I use will automatically create 301 redirects so the old URLs still work. The question is, will this have any negative impacts on page authority/page rank? From what I've read, it seems having 301's used to have a negative impact but doesn't anymore?

Keyword On Page 1 Everywhere but Google (Site Specific)
Website: www.wheelchairparts.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Mike.Bean
Keyword: wheelchair parts My website is #1 or #2 on almost every search engine besides Google. Google has us bouncing between the bottom of page 2 and top of 3. However we are on page one for "wheelchairparts". I need to get a link building campaign going for this site. I feel it's more difficult for ecommerce websites and nothing seems to fit in with Rand's Mozcon 2016 Link Building talk except hacks. I need to find a flywheel. Either way, my question is what can I do other than link building to get on page 1 of Google for the term "wheelchair parts"? Thanks in advance! - Mike Bean1 -
What are the effects of having Multiple Redirects for pages under the same domain
Dear Mozers, First of all let me wish you all a Very Happy, Prosperous, Healthy, Joyous & Successful New Year ! I'm trying to analyze one of the website's Web Hosting UK Com Ltd. and during this process I've had this question running through my mind. This project has been live since the year 2003 and since then there have be changes made to the website (obviously). There have also been new pages been added, the same way some new pages have even been over-written with changes in the url structures too. Now, coming back to the question, if I've have a particular url structure in the past when the site was debuted and until date the structure has been changes thrice (for example) with a 301 redirect to every back dated structure, WOULD it impact the sites performance SEOwise ? And let's say that there's hundreds of such redirections under the same domain, don't you think that after a period of time we should remove the past pages/urls from the server ? That'd certainly increase the 404 (page not found) errors, but that can be taken care of. How sensible would it be to keep redirecting the bots from one url to the other when they only visit a site for a short stipulated time? To make it simple let me explain it with a real life scenario. Say if I was staying a place A then switched to a different location in another county say B and then to C and so on, and finally got settled at a place G. When I move from one place to another, I place a note of the next destination I'm moving to so that any courier/mail etc. can be delivered to my current whereabouts. In such a case there's a less chance that the courier would travel all the destinations to deliver the package. Similarly, when a bot visits a domain and it finds multiple redirects, don't you think that it'd loose the efficiency in crawling the site? Ofcourse, imo. the redirects are important, BUT it should be there (in htaccess) for only a period of say 3-6 months. Once the search engine bots know about the latest pages, the past pages/redirects should be removed. What are your opinions about this ?

301 redirect Actinic HTML pages to ASP. Achievable?
Hi - I'm hoping someone can help me resolve an issue in relation to setting up 301 redirects. The client to whom I provide SEO services is being told by his developers that setting up 301 redirects is not achievable from old HTML pages to his new site running on a Windows server. My feeling is that it should be fine, and I have found documentation online that seems to support this, however I'm no developer, certainly no server admin, so I was wondering if anyone could advise me? Is it feasible to set up 301 redirects from Actinic sites (HTML pages) to a new site in NOP commerce running on a Windows server (ASP pages). Thank you for your help! Iain

301 a page and then remove the 301
I have a real estate website that has a city hub page. All the homes for sale within a city are linked to from this hub page. Certain small cities may have one home on the market for a month and then not have any homes on the market for months or years. I call them "Ghost Cities". This problem happens across many cities at any point in time. The resulting city hub pages are left with little to no content. We are throwing around the idea of 301 redirecting these "Ghost City" pages to a page higher up in the hierarchy (Think state or county) until we get new homes for sale in the city. At that point we would remove the 301. Any thoughts on this strategy? Is it bad to turn 301s on and off like that? Thanks!

New domain name for existing site
Hi all, Our business has aquired a new domain name because there are several organisations closely related to ours that use similar domain names to target a niche group of users. We would like to use this new domain name to link to an existing website with content targeted at this user group as we feel that they will be more comfortable getting to the content via this new URL. After a useful search in these forums the majority of SEOMOZ gurus suggest that the new URL should be redirected to our current site using a 301 and we are happy to do this. However do we have to link the URL to our homepage or is it acceptable to link to a subfolder within the domain and then targeting content on this page to the user niche? Thanks for any input. Kind regards. Edit 11:38 The old url is oldcommunity.charity.com (we know having a subdomain is bad) this is where we manage all community engagement. The new url is www.newparticularcommunity.com and we would redirect this to oldcommunity.charity.com. The reason we have bought www.oldparticularcommunity.com is because the url is used by other charities for community engagement and is recognised by the community we are targeting. We are redirecting to our old site because we do not want to engage with them on this new url as our old site oldcommunity.charity.com already does this and can cater for the new community and perhaps they haven't realised that we can.
