Backlinks not showing in OSE
-
Hi I have been undertaking back linking for our website and have submitted our site to a range of online directories and quite a few of them are currently live. However when I download the Open site explorer report I'm not seeing these links included in the back link list. Can anyone tell me when they are likely to appear please?

This is also a great suggestion. Haven't yet made the leap for paid Majestic SEO tools, but I am oh so close!

Hi Hardley,
It's a good question, and one many people ask. Even though Joel's advice on using the link: search operator is a good one, you'll also get limited results with this. As Google will only show a handful.
As Dana mentioned, OSE only updates once a month. However as much as I love OSE and use it everyday, it doesn't have nearly as much data on links as Google does. Therefore it can take a while to find all your hard work.
Try using Majestic SEO. In my opinion they don't do as good as job summarising link info, they have a bigger index of link data. It's likely your links will show up there.
As with any SEO/life subject, get data/opinion from multiple sources and make an educated guess.
Hope that helps

I also have the same problem. There are links that are pointing to my site that are not showing up on OSE. These are old links. I'm thinking OSE doesn't capture all inbound links.
What I like to do is use the link operator in chrome or safari
use link: then the name of your site without the www or the .com. This will give you a list of every site that mentions your site.
I would then make a list of all those sites and then use the seo tool bar for Firefox to see if they are followed or no followed links.

Hi Hardley,
OSE updates only about once a month. The last update happened a few days ago and the next one is scheduled for December 6th. Here's a link to the update calendat: https://seomoz.zendesk.com/entries/345964-linkscape-update-schedule
I'd check again after the next update to see if your backlinks are showing up at that point. If not then it's possible that the directories with which you've submitted may no longer be indexed by Google. This has become a more and more common issue as Google is trying to clear its index of directories that have no editorial discretion and just include links to any site that pays them for a link.
Hope that's helpful!
Dana

Outreach for backlinks
What are some of the best ways to reach out for back links? The goal is to get a link from their website to our root or an anchored text but what are some techniques and options to consider to make it beneficial for both parties?

How does PageRank pass through a backlink on a subdomain vs. subdirectory?
Scenario 1: I earn a link on exampleblog.root.com/example-page/. The DA is 90, but it's a brand new page so PA is 0. Subdomain is also new, zero backlinks. Scenario 2: I earn a link on root.com/example-page/. The DA is 90, PA is still new so 0 for now. My assumption is that PR will flow from the homepage through the subdirectory then ultimately to my domain. If the subdomain doesn't inherit any of the root-level metrics, then should I even be worried about the DA in scenario 1? What are the seo implications between the 2 scenarios?

Backlinks - Linking to new domain
Hello Moz community! My established client recently franchised their business by adding a metro area location. We have thousands of back links built to the corporate website, a lot of which have anchor text that are geo-targeted to the new metro area website. We still find the corporate website important, but would rather focus our efforts now on the newly franchised location. Does anyone have experience with successfully having old links changed to a new domain and if so how? When changing directory listings, such as everything on get listed, is it better do do slowly or as much at once as possible? Any recommendations or information would be appreciated! Thanks!

Backlinks from Trade Website - Are they worth it?
Hi I am doing some linking building for a niche and slightly dull industry. I have found that trade magazine want a lot of money to publish press releases with back links. The publications are relevant to my industry but have a low page rank on Google. Is it still worth paying for these links? Thanks David
