Use 301 redirects when deleting old products?
-
I'm removing old products (wines) from my site, and I've been using 301 redirects for each product page back to the winery page. My question is, am I using best practice? I want people who search for these now nonexistent products to go to the winery page where they will see what is now available. But does google approve?
I've also tried leaving the product's page intact but saying that it is no longer available and putting a link in the text that points to the winery page.
Which is better, in the eyes of the god google?
Thanks!

The only additional suggestion I'd make here is that maybe you 301 redirect to the closest current product instead of the winery page. If they're looking for a 2006 vintage and you now have the 2007 vintage, possibly redirect to the 2007 vintage.

Agreed. That's what we do at my company with old products

Yeah your first solution, that's what always gets recommended, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't do (on here especially) if it wasn't above board... there's been a whole bunch of articles that I've seen on here though saying to go for it, which I do... and stuff on SEMPO, and a loads of other places all saying the same. I'm sure it would be all over the SEO blogs and forums by now if there were any change to that

Complete redesign of website and 301 redirects
I did a complete redesign and content change for my website. I have my new webpages indexed but they still haven't replaced the old ones after 1 month. In search results I see both the old ones and the news ones. How long of a delay should I expect (approximately) for the old pages to be replaced by the new ones knowing the entire website was changed. Thank you,

Should you 301, 302, or rel=canonical private pages?
What should you do with private 'logged in' pages from a seo perspective? They're not visible to crawlers and shouldn't be indexed, so what is best practice? Believe it or not, we have found quite a few back links to private pages and want to get the ranking benefit from them without them being indexed. Eg: http://twiends.com/settings (Only logged in user can see the page) 302 them: We can redirect users/crawlers temporarily, but I believe this is not ideal from a seo perspective? Do we lose the link juice to this page? 301 them: We can do a permanent redirect with a short cache time. We preserve most link juice now, but we probably mess up the users browser. Users trying to reach a private page while logged out may have issues reaching it after logged in. **Serve another page with rel=canonical tag: **We could serve back the home page without changing the URL. We use a canonical tag to tell the crawlers that it's a duplicate of the home page. We keep most of the link juice, and the browser is unaffected. Yes, a user might share that different URL now, but its unlikely. We've been doing 302's up until now, now we're testing the third option. How do others solve this problem? Is there a problem with it? Any advice appreciated.

Is ranking hurt by slow moving product
I sell B2B industrial products. I have 300 products on the site. Some products are seldom purchased and the brand name is not significant for these products If the title page is the right wording and length, and there is a valid product widget -1-1-1 but nobody has bought one in 5 years due to it being a niche product, but they could and it's a profitable sale. Question: Is** overall site rankin**g **being hurt **by valid content ( Description, Part # and Price and it can be checked out in the cart), but is is never/seldom searched for.?

302 (Temporary Redirect) up and growing, how to fix?
Hi guys. On my website I have an action that will only perform if you are logged into your account, otherwise you are redirected to the login page causing a 302 redirection. When SEOmoz crawls my website, it gets all these redirections to the login page, but I really can't do much better so what is the best way of fixing this? I've thought of using rel="nofollow", but I want make sure this change will fix my issue, both with the SEOmoz crawler and any other search engine crawler. Thank you guys so much!

Keyword use in Title tag?
To improve SEO on a particular keyword, should you use that same keyword in the title tag of multiple pages within your site? Will that help or would it actually hurt by causing pages within your site to complete against each other for that keyword? Does it make a difference if that keyword is truly used on all those different pages?

How many times to use keyword
So if I have my main site, blog and article directory section, can I use keyword in all three places, but obviously different, unique content? And if so, can I link them to make it even more powerful?
