Alt image tags not being read by on-page optimization tool

Can bots see the keyword among other words in aIt image tags? For example, if the keyword is upholstery leather and the image tag says "our upholstery leather collection" will the keyword be recognized? Another example is buy leather. I have a image tag on a slide that reads "free samples before you buy leather" but an on-page analysis in moz does not show an alt tag title for buy leather? Same problem with an moz on-page analysis of the term upholstery leather.

Good point. Just ran it through W3 and everything was spic and span clean..1.0 Strict compliance! The site is Leather Hide Store if you want to see but again, maybe a question for team moz.

Sure. If it's only done 3x and genuinely descriptive, you're probably good.
As for why 'moz pro might not be seeing it, it's indeed tough to say, but I'd start by double-checking that you have valid code using http://validator.w3.org. If there's a tag left open or a quote out of place, that can muck things all up.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I actually only have upholstery leather mentioned on the page 3x and the moz on-page optimization report said I needed a fourth. Titling the alt img upholstery leather was perfect b/c it is an accurate description of the image and (I thought) would be recognized as the 4th mention of the keyword on the page. My question (or problem) is why is the moz on-page optimizer not reading it? I am glad to here the the googlebots will recognize the keyword even when enclosed by other text. One thought just occurred to me and that is the images are hyperlinked...could that influence it? Maybe a question best posed to the moz team?

Hi Hunter.
1. Yes, search engines definitely read text inside of image ALT tags.
2. Yes, you should absolutely use them, every time. Among other important applications, they're used by screen readers for the blind. Having a handicap-accessible site, among other things, immediately places your site in a league above the competition in terms of overall quality.
3. Maybe, on the scope of keyword uses that you mentioned. You'll need to be very, very careful on how you use keywords in hidden tags like this. There was a time when keyword density was everything to Google, and black hat SEO's stuffed the crap out of these hidden tags with their keywords. Nowadays, the help that you give yourself, keyword-wise, for Google's standard (non-image) search, from ALT tags, is really negligible. It's much more about the above (having a useful description, just in those scenarios that it's really necessary). Most of the time, when I see a client trying something like this, they've invited massive penalties on themselves from abusing it. It's much easier to hurt yourself than help yourself through "optimizing" a lot of on-page factors like these, so be careful and keep these tags succinct / genuinely descriptive.

How to deal with hundreds of externally-generated images with no alt text?
Hi all This is a good one. I work for a webdev company who has clients in the transport industry. Part of our work on their sites involves pulling in transport-related offers from a feed. This includes both text and images, which our site template turns into viewable pages. The problem is that Moz has flagged that these images don't come with alt text, and there are _hundreds and hundreds of them. _I can't add alt text to them all, there just isn't the time or resources. Besides, the list is updated frequently, and new images are pulled in. So... what do? Would it be prudent to noindex them all by default setting? I'm stuck! Many thanks,

Hey Mozzers, I've recently been doing a content audit on the category and sub-category pages on our site. The old pages had the following "profile" Above The Fold

600 words+ of content duplicated from articles, sub categories and products My criticisms of the page were
1. No content (text) above the fold
2. Page content was mostly duplicated content
3. No keyword structure, many pages competed for the same keywords and often unwanted pages outranked the desired page for the keyword. I cleaned this up to the following structure Above The Fold
H1 Page Heading 80-200 Word of Content (Including a link to supporting article)
H2 Page Heading (Expansion or variance of the H1 making sure relevant) 80-200 150 Words of Content
Image Links to Categories / Products
Below the Fold
The rest of the Image Links to Categories / Products The new pages are now all unique content, targeted towards 1-2 themed keywords. I have a few worries I was hoping you could address. 1. The new pages are only 180-300 words of text, simply because that is all that is needed to describe that category and provide some supporting information. the pages previously contained 600 words. Should I be looking to get more content on these pages?
2. If i do need more content, It wont fit "above the fold" without pushing the products and sub categories below the fold, which isn't ideal. Should I be putting it there anyway or should I insert additional text below the products and below the fold or would this just be a waste.
3. Keyword Structure. I have designed each page to target a selction of keywords, for example.
a) The main widget pages targets all general "widget" terms and provides supporting infromation
b) The sub-category blue widget page targets anything related and terms such as "Navy Widgets" because navy widgets are a type of blue widget etc"
Is this keyword structure over-optimised or exactly what I should be doing. I dont want to spread content to thin by being over selective in my categories Any other critisms or comment welcome0 -
Over Optimization - What exactly is it?
I keep hearing this term "over optimization" and people assuming they have received an over optimization penalty. I also hear people say, "You need to optimize every page on your site." So at what point does a site become "over optimized?" Are there any good reads around here that explain this better?

Is there a set length / restriction on ALT tag content?
Something in which is an essential part of any site but I cant for the life of me remember if there is a set / recommended limit to the size if should be or is restricted to.

Recommendation: Add a canonical URL tag referencing this URL to the header of the page.
Please clarify: In the page optimization tool, seomoz recommends using the canonical url tag on the unique page itself. Is it the same canonical url tag used when want juice to go to the original page? Although the canonical URL tag is generally thought of as a way to solve duplicate content problems, it can be extremely wise to use it on every (unique) page of a site to help prevent any query strings, session IDs, scraped versions, licensing deals or future developments to potentially create a secondary version and pull link juice or other metrics away from the original. We believe the canonical URL tag is a best practice to help prevent future problems, even if nothing is specifically duplicate/problematic today. Please give example.

We have 5 postions on page 2 in a google search, but none on page 1\. How can we fix this?
For one of our most important key phrases we have 5 listings on page 2 but none on page 1. We are an ecommerce company, the key phrase we're trying for is a Top Level Category name for us, so the 5 links we have on googles second page for the key phrase (in order) are the appropriate top level category page, the sites home page and than three sub categories of that top level category. So while that all makes sense, can't we convince google to concentrate all that link power/juice into just the top level category page? Hopefully bumping it to first page rank? The 5 ranks are 11-15

How can I stop google reading a certain section of text with my H1 tag?
Hey Mozzers, I'm wondering if anybody knows of a way that I can stop google reading a certain part of text within my H1 texts? My issue is that I have individual office pages on my site, but many offices are based in the same city; such as 'London'. I want to keep London within the H1 tag for user experience but I do not want it to be picked up by the search engines and start a canonical issue. I've seen some people say to use document.write or use an image. Does anybody know of a correct way of doing this? Many Thanks.
