Will links to www and none www result in penalty?
-
Hello all,
Normally i redirect my www to none www to avoid the potential of duplicate content and as its typically something that is done in SEO.
I don't have access to the site of the company I am working for at the moment as everything related to the sites code goes through the web developer.
At the moment the site lives at www and none www and one does not redirect to the other. I have been building links (organically as we engage on a few forums and blogs) to the www as that is how it is linked internally already and how links from the job boards we post on link.
We do however have some natural none www links and my concern is that since the site isn't redirected that it is being penalised or could become penalised because of this.
I imagine that it isn't a serious penalty if one at all but I would rather know so I can try and get it sorted as fast as possible.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. The WWW has the most links and the http has very few. I was mainly worried about the vulnerability of this structure and the risk the website faces from negative seo.
It should be sorted in the coming weeks but for now I'm stuck with it on both.
Thanks

i am glad it helped :}

Hi Luke,
You are not going to face penalty from search engine for these issue. I have the same issue with my client but I have Google webmaster access of each site. I download all duplicate html then forward to client to aware them of this issue. Most of the client provide me access after checking too many duplication errors. But if I don't get access, I check backlink profile of both version and continue my seo effort on version which has more backlink.
Hope this help you out....

Thanks for the reply and the clarification. I know that as mentioned it should use one or the other but your input has helped me with determining my stance on the issue.I'm guessing that there's no solid facts on this in regards to a penalty.

Hello Luke,
I don't believe there would be anytype of penalty for such an issue, but yes you should finalize which domain should you use www or non www and put a 301 redirect on it.
It will prevent duplicated content issue in google and will also flow the incoming link juice to that one domain name instead of the current division of two as i see.
Hope this helps.

Outbound Links
I have a page on upstrap-pro.com that provides weights of cameras and lenses. The user/buyer of my on-slip camera straps needs to know the weight his camera and lens to determine the proper pad size... large to small. We have put together a long list of the most popular customer cameras. The way it was done (by my daughter) was to also provide a via a link to dpreview.com which is an excellent site for camera information including specifications etc. My personal feeling about this is mixed. I can do it by having it open dpreview.com in a new tab but then the user/customer could still get distracted and go down the rabbit hole. On the other hand dpreview is such a good site that if they are new to photography and don't know about it, they should. I don't get a dime from dpreview. If fact I doubt they would ever link back to me because they do not write about camera straps. I hear mixed things about outbound links. In this file there are quite a few outbound links to dpreview to keep it consistent. I could do a nofollow on all of them but I read that this is the easy way out. Google is jump ball and I have no clue what Cutts and his merry men are going to decide is cool or not cool. I'd like some thoughts or options... Thanks... A small part of the file below. Should I consider webmaster tools links and linked pages ratio to remove unnatural links?
I don't know this is a suitable place for post this question. Anyway I have done it. According to the Google webmaster tools, Links to your site page. My blog has considerable amount of links, from linked pages (from certain domain names). For an instance please refer following screenshot. When I am removing unnatural links, should I consider these, links from linked pages ratio? Almost all of these sites are social bookmarking sites. When I publish a new bookmark on those sites, they automatically add a homepage link. As a result of that, I got a huge number of home page links from linked pages. What is your recommendation? Thanks! webmaster.png web_master_tools.png

Internal Links
In OSE, it is reporting that i don't have any internal links to my homepage. In the header on every page is my logo in the top left hand corner which links back to my homepage. Shouldn't this mean then that every page should link to the home page? Similarly, internal pages which link from my main nav aren't showing up as having any internal links in OSE. Any ideas?

Devalued links or negative affect?
Hi there, I'm looking into an issue with a site that was hit after Penguin was introduced. The site lost 70% of traffic over night. The site in question seemed to have a large number of backlinks with over optimized anchor text which seems to most likely be the reason for drop in rankings. But there is also some links from blog networks here too unfortunately, so my question here really is do Google just devalue these links and discount them from consideration in their ranking algorithm or do the links still count but instead of adding positive affects in SERPs add a negative affect? My reason for this question is I'm trying to determine whether it's worth saving this website or just starting fresh with a new domain. That does bring me to another question, if I have to start fresh on a new domain is it a possibility to reuse the content from the old site? (providing I remove the URLs from Google via Webmaster tools). Any help/advice/answers here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Preserving Link Value
My client has an existing domain, domain A. They recently purchased and absorbed another company with their own domain, domain B. For marketing purposes company B will be rebranded as company A. They want to redirect domain B to domain A. The problem is that company B has by far the more visible domain, with 4x the number of inbound links. If I redirect domain B to domain A, what will happen to these links? I'm thinking their value will be lost.
