How can a page be top rated for a phrase it does not have?
-
Hi,
While looking to buy a Christmas gift to my wife I was searching for yellow diamonds.
Being a bit familiar with SEO I gotta understand how the following page was ranked 4th for "yellow diamonds":
http://www.bluenile.com/diamonds/fancy-color-diamonds
The phrase yellow diamonds is not mentioned even once!
Thanks

I have ranked 100's of keywords on sites that I wasn't allowed to touch the front page of. The keywords were not mentioned on their pages at all either. In some instances your keyword doesn't even need to be on the page to rank like i this instance.
Have a great day.

BTW, I was curious and just now had a look at the page you are referring to, using the SEOMoz On-Page Analysis tool and it gave a "C" for the keyword "Yellow Diamonds". A "C" means the keyword appears in 70-80% of the tested elements.
So, now you can see what I've been talking about above comes into play for the exact keyword "Yellow Diamonds".
BTW, For "Diamond" it received "B" (Which is higher than "C") and for "Yellow" it received "C" again. So you can see that these combination led to the SEOMoz On-page Analysis tool giving a "C" for the exact keyword "Yellow Diamonds"

Hi,
Based on the OpenExplorer Tool, it seems like the sites are linking to them on the keyword "Blue Nile."
However, based on Rand's prediction on Google using Co-Citation, it seems to make sense. It may be because other sites are mentioning Yellow Diamond by Blue Nile without linking to them and Google sees that or used Blue Nile as anchor text and linked but Google is still picking up that Yellow Diamond is associated with Blue Nile. Therefore, it is ranked 4th.
Hopefully this solve your curiosity. I actually learned something new as well.

Since your question is about on-page optimization...If you look at the page source code, for this particular page you are referring to, you'll see that the words "yellow diamond" and a combination of Yellow and Diamond(s) appear several times. To be specific:
-
Yellow Diamond - Once (On meta name="<a class="attribute-value">keywords</a>" content= )
-
Diamond/ Diamonds - More than 70 times (Including on ahrefs, links, alt tags, h tags etc.)
-
Yellow - More than 50 times (Including on ahrefs, links, alt tags, h tags etc.)
Add to that the fact that they might be having good references from outside pages.
So, there you go.

Just wondering,
Are the backlinks for "yellow diamonds" or you didn't go so deep?
-
Hi,
I took a quick look at the website and actuallly did the search on Google. Although the word "Yellow Diamond" is never mentioned in the text ,but they did use yellow "text text" diamond (such as Yellow Radiant Cut Diamond) and from what I see, Google is picking up on that. Furthermore, I see that they also used Yellow "text text" diamond for the Image Alt Texts and Image URL which are also factors for on-page SEO.
Furthermore the keyword yellow "text text" diamonds are mentioned a lot of times in the related items section.
I understand why you wondering why although they didn't use "Yellow Diamond" on any on-page factors, but since you are familiar with SEO, you should know that backlinks are really important to ranking factors as well. I just used SEOmoz's research tool to check on bluenile.com's linking and saw that they have a lot of backlinks from high authority sites. I believe that is the reason why it is ranked 4th.
Edit: I just saw the video that Tyler mentioned in his answer and it seems like it applies to this situation as well.
Hope this helps!

Thanks but I'm not even talking about anchors and/or links from other places.
I'm talking about plain on-page texts.
The page does no have the phrase "yellow diamonds" written even once.
It's amazing

The best answer I have seen is from a Whiteboard Friday that Rand put out a few weeks ago.
Take a listen, it is interesting and if I read your question correctly, it is the answer you vare looking for -or at least a good starting point.

Why is my home page ranking much higher than my collection page?
Hi everyone, Why is my client's home page ranking high for a certain keyword phrase rather than a collection page I have which is well optimised for this keyword? The collection page is on the 10th SERPs page. I did see there were keywords used in the footer of page and the keyword was also used in some intro text on the home page so I removed the keyword from these two places nearly 2 weeks ago and requested google to reindex both the collection page and home page and I've not seen any improvement of the collection page's ranking in SERPs. I also changed the meta description and meta title as the ctr was poor but there wasn''t that many impressions either. It is a competitive keyword organically so maybe the collection page's authority is just not good enough compared to the competitors hence why they are choosing the home page as it has higher page authority however this still is not helpful to searchers who land on home page. Does anyone have any ideas of what else I can do to get google to rank the ocllection page higher for the keyword instead of home page?

Insane traffic loss and indexed pages after June Core Update, what can i do to bring it back?
Hello Everybody! After June Core Update was released, we saw an insane drop on traffic/revenue and indexed pages on GSC (Image attached below) The biggest problem here was: Our pages that were out of the index were shown as "Blocked by robots.txt", and when we run the "fetch as Google" tool, it says "Crawl Anomaly". Even though, our robots.txt it's completely clean (Without any disallow's or noindex rules), so I strongly believe that the reason that this pattern of error is showing, is because of the June Core Update. I've come up with some solutions, but none of them seems to work: 1- Add hreflang on the domain: We have other sites in other countries, and ours seems like it's the only one without this tag. The June update was primarily made to minimize two SERP results per domain (or more if google thinks it's relevant). Maybe other sites have "taken our spot" on the SERPS, our domain is considerably newer in comparison to the other countries. 2- Mannualy index all the important pages that were lost The idea was to renew the content on the page (title, meta description, paragraphs and so on) and use the manual GSC index tool. But none of that seems to work as well, all it says is "Crawl Anomaly". 3- Create a new domain If nothing works, this should. We would be looking for a new domain name and treat it as a whole new site. (But frankly, it should be some other way out, this is for an EXTREME case and if nobody could help us. ) I'm open for ideas, and as the days have gone by, our organic revenue and traffic doesn't seem like it's coming up again. I'm Desperate for a solution Any Ideas gCi46YE

Should I apply Canonical Links from my Landing Pages to Core Website Pages?
I am working on an SEO project for the website: https://wave.com.au/ There are some core website pages, which we want to target for organic traffic, like this one: https://wave.com.au/doctors/medical-specialties/anaesthetist-jobs/ Then we have basically have another version that is set up as a landing page and used for CPC campaigns. https://wave.com.au/anaesthetists/ Essentially, my question is should I apply canonical links from the landing page versions to the core website pages (especially if I know they are only utilising them for CPC campaigns) so as to push link equity/juice across? Here is the GA data from January 1 - April 30, 2019 (Behavior > Site Content > All Pages😞

What to do about endless size pages
I'm working on a site that sells products that come in many different sizes. One product may come in 30 sizes. The products themselves are identical, except for the size. There are collections pages that are all of several kinds of product in a particular size and then there are individual product pages of one product the specific size. Collections pages for widgets size 30 is the same content as widgets size 29. A single product page for gold-widget-size-30 is the same content as the single product page gold-widget-size-29. To make matters worse, they all have the same tags and very little written content. The site is in Shopify. Last month there were almost 400 pages that produced visits on organic, mostly in the 1 to 4 per month range, but all together about 1000 visits. There are several hundred more that produced no traffic in organic, but are duplicate (except for size) and part of this giant ball of tangled string. What do you think I should do? Thanks... Mike

On Page vs Off Page - Which Has a Greater Effect on Rankings?
Hi Mozzers, My site will be migrating to a new domain soon, and I am not sure how to spend my time. Should I be optimizing our content for keywords, improving internal linking, and writing new content - or should I be doing link building for our current domain (or the new one)? Is there a certain ratio that determines rankings which can help me prioritize these to-dos?, such as 70:30 in favor of link-building? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Page Authority Issue
My home page http://www.musicliveuk.com has a domain authority of 42 and page authority of 52. However I have set up other pages on the site to optimise for one keyword per page as I thought this was best practice. For example http://www.musicliveuk.com/home/wedding-bands targets 'wedding band' but this has a page authority of 24 way below my competitors. Having used the keyword difficulty tool on here it appears that is why I am struggling to rank highly (number 9). This is the same problem for several of my main keywords. I am building links to this and other pages in order to increase their authority and eventually rank highly but am I not better off optimising my home page that already has a good page authority and would probably out rank my competitors? Or am I missing something?
