Domain Switch - With lost control of original domain.
-
Hey all,
A client finally sold a domain name after being harassed to sell for many years, without talking to us about it first. They moved the site to a new domain, and the purchasing company took over the original domain. Then they called me, wondering why the site is no longer showing up in Google.
I've done some initial research, and everything I find for advice assumes that you have control over the original domain. We don't. I'm hoping someone here has some creative advice, so we don't have to start from the beginning, and/or painfully update links we've acquired.
My only thought was that the new company may be kind enough to post 301's for us if we provided them....
Any thoughts / advice / life rings will be greatly appreciated!

You are most welcome!
Good luck to you

Thank you! This is exactly the information I was looking for - gives me the perfect place to start. I really appreciate it!

If you can get the buyer to put redirects in place, here are your three options:
1. Redirect ANYTHING to the new domain's homepage: olddom.com/* => newdom.com
This is very easy to do technically, can even be done in the domain registrar's control panel. However, that's a bad option from an SEO point of view as you would be redirection anything (pages, contact info, product...) to your a single page, your homepage.
Should be used as a last option.
2. Redirect pages individually. You would end up with an .htaccess like that (I am assuming you didn't change anything to the site's structure):
redirect 301 /dir1/page32.php http://www.newdom.com/dir1/page32.php
redirect 301 /dir1/page33.php http://www.newdom.com/dir1/page33.php
redirect 301 /dir1/page34.php http://www.newdom.com/dir1/page34.php
...
This option is obviously time consuming but will give you the most control and the best SEO results as you will direct every single page (old one) to the new one (updated URL) passing its link juice and everything.
3. A generic redirect that will automatically redirect each and every page to its corresponding one on the new domain:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^oldsite.com
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://newsite.com/$1 [R=301,L]
This is very similar to option 2 but it is not as time consuming.
Hope that helps.

You're right, and thanks for the confirmation!
On the subject of redirects - am I correct in assuming that a general redirect is impossible (as it would redirect all traffic, even "legit" traffic to the new site), and that we'd have to create a 301 for each page?
Thank you for answering my questions / confirming my suspicions. Being that this is an extremely inadvisable situation to get yourself into, there's really just not a lot of info/advice out there, even if it's just to tell you that you're SOL!

I think you know the answer, you just need someone else to confirm that there is little you can do!
Obviously, you should start by updating the links you control and build some new ones.
You must alos make certain the content is unique and that the buyer doens't use the original content.
If you had implemented authorship, you could still benefit from it by updating the links.
That's all I can think of.
Of course, the best thing you could get is a nice 301 Redirection for the buyer.
Google luck!

Redirect old shop to new domain
I have an old Magento shop placed on a subdomain: http://webshop.teamout.dk/ Now I have created a new shop in another store system called ShopOrama on a new rootdomain: What is the best way to get all my already indexed sites from google to redirect to my new site with the new META title + description? I have tried the Magento > Catalog > URL Rewrite, but it contains over 500 redirects already and making custom redirects for all my sites will take a lot of time. Because of the old site being a subdomain I can't change address in GWT. I'm looking forward to your solutions

Best practice for multiple domain links
A site i'm working on has about 12 language domains - .es, it, .de etc. On each page of every domain the header has links to every homepage. At the moment these are all set to no-follow as an initial step to stop potential link profile issues spreading around. Moving forward i'm not totally sure how to handle these links. On one side I see and agree that no-follow is not necessary, but do-follow is just filtering out and weakening link juice. What is the best way to handle this scenario?

Effect of temporary subdomains on the root domain
Hi all, A client of ours tends to have a number of offers and competitions during the year and would like to host these competitions on separate sub-domains. Once a competition is over (generally these last for approximately a month) the sub-domain gets deleted and pointed back to the main site. I was wondering whether this would have any effects on the root domain. Can I get your opinion please?

Deleted Old Site - Relaunched on Same Domain
Now I have a bunch of links that are dead. (45 to be exact) What should I do? Rebuild the links, 301 redirect them to the homepage, 410 them? I didn't get a lot of external traffic from the links (maybe ~500 uniques/mo). Of that traffic, most of the users would bounce, my SEO wasn't very good so the content they received wasn't as relevant as it could have been. I'm not really worried about losing the traffic, but rather minimizing any penalty from google.

Subfolder to Root Domain, Should i or not?
Dear All, I am kinda of stuck and need your helps, I have major client's site which is located in subdirectory. Instance: http://www.majorclient.com.cn/cn/ and as you can see domain name is already localized and they are not planning to make any english version of the site, So there will be no /eng/ folder but clients whole website is /cn/ subdirectory which is totally unnecessary and i would like to 301 whole site to **http://www.majorclient.com.cn ** But the problem is that this site has been /cn/ folder forever since the beginning and lot of trusted links are pointing to www.majorclient.com.cn/cn/ So should i move it or just configure 301 www.majorclient.com.cn to www.majorclient.com.cn/cn/ leave it there and don't bother. Help?

How to 301 multiple domain names to a single domain
Hey, I tried to find and answer to this seemingly simple question, but no luck. So, I have one domain name with a website attached to it. I also registered all the other domain names that are similar to it or have different extensions - I want to redirect all the other domain names to my one main domain name without getting penalised by the big G. It looks like this: www.mainsite.com - this is my main domain I also have www.mainsite.com.au, www.mainsite.org, and www.mainsite.org.au which I all want to just redirect to www.mainsite.com I have been told that the best way to do this is a 301 redirect, but to do that you need to make a CNAME for all the other domains that points to www.mainsite.com. My problem is that I cannot seem to create a CNAME record for http://mainsite.com - I have it working for http://www.mainsite.com but not the non www record. What should I be doing differently? Is it just my DNS provider is useless? Thanks, Anthony

Keyword domains
Hi everyone. Two questions regarding keyword domains (e.g. "widgets.com") If we have to choose a domain with an extra word, does it make a difference to have the added word before or after? E.g. "my-widgets.com" vs "widgets-now.com" Does it make a difference if the extra word is a generic vs a 'real' word? E.g. "my-widgets.com" vs "japanese-widgets.com" Thanks a lot for your feedback!
