My websites position has dropped, any ideas why?
-
Hi,
First off im new here, so hello to everyone.
Now to the reason why I have joined.
I am currently trying to rank for 2 terms:
**UK Bank Holidays 2013 (Term 1) **and Bank Holidays 2013 (Term 2)
The page which im trying to rank these terms on is:
http://www.followuk.co.uk/bank-holidays
Now some background history:
On the 29th Dec 2013, term 1 was 5th and term 2 was 7th - rankings achieved through guest blogging.
Last night I changed the h1 tag from 'Bank Holidays 2013' to 'UK Bank Holidays 2013'.
Re-worded the meta description to try and increase the CTR.
And removed the term 'Bank Holiday' from the end of each sub-heading - Ex: 'New Year's Day Bank Holiday' to 'New Year's Day' - I did this because I felt it was to much so in total 'Bank Holiday' term had been removed from 5 sub-headings.
Ok, so I went into WMT and resubmitted for indexing, over night the page got reindexed - the term 'UK Bank Holidays 2013' stayed at the same position (5) BUT the 'Bank Holidays 2013' term dropped into hell at roughly position 250.
I'm thinking of changing everything back and crossing my fingers that term which dropped comes back BUT maybe im being to rash and it might jump back as the page stands.
I did a grade test using SEOMOZ and both terms generate a grade of 'A'.
Has anyone got any ideas? Sorry if the thread is a bit messy im currently crying all over the keyboard as im typing.
Thanks

"The guest blogging I did was through the MyBlogGuest system so 99% of the time links are do-follow.
Roughly 15 guest posts have been put up, the anchor text was split from 'UK Bank Holidays 2013' to 'Bank Holidays 2013' so roughly 8 each."
I made an assumption regarding the links you built as being manipulative, and based on your feedback so far it is likely I am correct. Can you post a link to one of the blog articles you wrote?
Regarding your traffic / ranking drop, it could have happened due to the changes you made or your links being devalued as manipulative or other factors. The links are my largest concern at this point.

Uh thanks for coming to have a look Ryan much appreciated.
The page itself is roughly 2 months old.
The guest blogging I did was through the MyBlogGuest system so 99% of the time links are do-follow.

I am a little confused with your statement about guest blogging because I thought guest blogging was a good way of generating good links, I have seen a few videos from Matt Cutts and Rand on this subject but maybe I am doing the wrong type of guest blogging.
I understand what your saying about flux and term positions for different locations but I have consistently generated 50 visits a day from the term 'Bank Holidays 2013' and in the last 24 hours this has dropped to 0.
If it is as you say and it's just the way the cookie crumbles im fine with that and I know I need to generate more auth links but my worries are have I effected the ranking from the content changes I made, by the sounds of what your saying probably not.
Thanks again Ryan for looking into this.

You are trying to manage SEO as you would a PPC campaign. SEO does not work in this manner.
How old is this web page? New web pages naturally bounce around in SERPs as Google tests the performance.
What kind of "guest blogging" did you do? It is highly likely any links you created to your site via a guest blog was either nofollow, in which case it does not directly benefit your SERP results, or is viewed as a manipulative link in which case the link is more likely to harm your site rather then help it.
Google rankings are not static. They are influenced by your location, which Google site you are using, your browsing history, and much more. You may see yourself in #5 where another person might not see you at all for the same term. I am not suggesting you completely ignore rankings, but neither should you use them as the holy grail. Examine your traffic.
With the above noted, I see your results in Google.co.uk as follows:
uk bank holidays 2013 #5
uk bank holiday #9
uk bank holidays #7
bank holiday 2013 #6
bank holidays 2013 - not in top 50

Ranking issue for new website
Hi all, I have got a specific SEO challenge. 6 months ago, we started to build an eCommerce site (located in the UK). In order to speed up the site launch, we copied the entire site over from an existing site based in Ireland. Now, the new UK site has been running for 5 months. Google has indexed many pages, which is good, but we can't rank high (position: between 20-30 for most pages). We thought it was because of content duplication in spite of different regions. So we tried to optimize the pages for the UK site to make them more UK-related and avoid content duplication. I've also used schema to tell google it's a UK-based site and set up Google my business and got more local citations. Besides, If you could give me any suggestions, it'd be perfect.

Website Snippet Update in Search Console?
I have a company that I started working with that has an outdated and inaccurate snippet coming up. See the link below. They changed their name from DK on Pittsburgh Sports to just DK Pittsburgh Sports several years ago, but the snippet is still putting the old info, including outdated and incorrect description. I'm not seeing that title or description anywhere on the site or a schema plugin. How can we get it updated? I have updated titles, etc. for the home page, and done a Fetch to get re-indexed. Does Snippet have a different type of refresh that I can submit or edit? Thanks in advance https://g.co/kgs/qZAnAC

Content position and topic modelling
Hi, Two questions here, First: Does the position of content have any impact on performance? For example say a page displays a league table (20 rows) so eats up most of the above-fold space. Would that table being top followed by content have a negative impact? Would creating 'some' content before a table help? Second: Does topic modelling actually help relevance signals? So say I sold guitars and the page had the word 'guitar' throughout the content, would including electric, acoustic, strings, amps etc also in the content help the page become more relevant for the term 'guitar'? Or would it just expand the terms the page would be eligible to show for? Thanks.

Website keeps dropping in ranking with no visible penalty.
Hi everyone! I would really appreciate your help on this! The website URL is: www.gipsydharma.com It has now been over a year, but we're finding it very difficult to start ranking for any useful keywords. Some keywords like: leather boots / boots for women / handmade clothing at some point went up to page 20, but have now dropped again below page 50. Now, most of our traffic comes from social media so the business is going OK. But the question still remains, what does Google have against the above URL? Its not a super amazing website, but it provides unique and engaging content and has zero spam. I also don't think its over optimized, but I may be wrong on this. Recently, I've also noticed that the Domain Authority has also been going down, it was 46 at some point and now its 40. There's no visible penalty and all the pre-Penguin links (of which there weren't that many, I think) were cleaned up months ago, without Google suggesting that. There are very few keyword rich backlinks and a lot of them come naturally anyways. So again, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

My homepage dropped off of Google today? Any ideas?
My site, www.leaffilter.com, previously ranked #1 for searches of "leaffilter" and "leaf filter". Today the #1 ranking for "leaffilter" with Google is gone. Well, it's not gone on all internet connection. At home the #1 ranking is in place. At the office computer it is not anywhere near page 1. I'm testing searches logged in, not logged in, cache and cookies cleared, different browsers. Other, secondary pages, are appearing on page 1. It looks as if the homepage is just no longer indexed...but not on all internet connection. Any ideas what is happening? Does anyone have any troubleshooting tips?

Duplicate Content http://www.website.com and http://website.com
I'm getting duplicate content warnings for my site because the same pages are getting crawled twice? Once with http://www.website.com and once with http://website.com. I'm assuming this is a .htaccess problem so I'll post what mine looks like. I think installing WordPress in the root domain changed some of the settings I had before. My main site is primarily in HTML with a blog at http://www.website.com/blog/post-name BEGIN WordPress <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On

How long till pages drop out of the index
In your experience how long does it normally take for 301-redirected pages to drop out of Google's index?
