301 duplicate content dynamic url
-
I have a number of pages that appear as duplicate titles in google webmaster. They all have to do with a brand name query. I want to 301 these pages since I'm going to relaunch my new website on wordpress and don't want to have 404s on these pages. a simple 301 redirect doesn't work since they are dynamic urls.
here is an example:
/kidsfashionnetherlands/mimpi.html?q=brand%3Amim+pi%3A&page=2&sort=relevance
/kidsfashionnetherlands/mimpi.html?q=mim+pi&page=3&sort=relevance
/kidsfashionnetherlands/mimpi.html?q=mim+pi&page=5&sort=relevance
should all be 301 to the original page that I want to remain indexed:
/kidsfashionnetherlands/mimpi.html
I have a lot of these but for different queries. Should I do a 301 on each of them to avoid having 404s when I change my site to wordpress?
Thanks

I can't believe it but it worked! I've been trying to fix this for days....Thanks so much for you help!

It's really going to be a bit complex to get this done right. But based your example above, it looks like you just want to redirect anything with a query string back to the base url.
There's a discussion specifically about that right here:
http://www.webmasterworld.com/apache/3203401.htm
You could start with this code and refine it from there:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} .
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1? [R=301,L]Good luck.

Thanks Marek, I know how to do a simple 301 redirect, which the generator creates but it doesn't work for a dynamic url : http://www.dashinfashion.com/kidsfashionnetherlands/mimpi.html?q=brand%3Amim+pi%3A&page=2&sort=relevance to http://www.dashinfashion.com/kidsfashionnetherlands/mimpi.html
Any idea how to do this with a dynamic url?

Thanks for your reply. I'm actually going to relaunch a new site and want to get rid of these duplicate pages. I don't have access to these duplicated pages to put the noindex.
Thought of doing a 301 since these pages will be eliminated with the new website. Any idea how to do a 301 for a dynamic url?

I setup the url parameter tool yesterday blocking out these pages but my concern is that when I relaunch my website I'll have lots of 404s.
I thought of also doing the 301 redirect for pages listed in google webmaster as duplicate pages but I can't figure out the right script. A simple 301 redirect won't work because its a dynamic url.
Do you know how to setup a dynamic 301? For example: http://www.dashinfashion.com/kidsfashionnetherlands/mimpi.html?q=brand%3Amim+pi%3A&page=2&sort=relevance
redirected to: http://www.dashinfashion.com/kidsfashionnetherlands/mimpi.html
Thanks!

Hi,
Your title for all these pages is:
<title>Mim Pi Netherlands Holland Dutch Clothes Girls Clothes Girls Dresses Baby Clothes Kids Fashion Mim Pi Children's Clothing Girls Fashion Designer</title>
and it is the same. In my opinion if you can not differentiate titles the best solution is to "noindex" search queries pages.

Have you seen the URL parameter tool in Google Webmaster Tools? It's made just to handle these kinds of situations:
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1235687
But, there's no reason you can't setup redirects for all of these URLs, but it's probably going to be time consuming to figure out all of the possible URL combinations that you have and where to redirect them to.

Fullsite=true coming up as duplicate content?
Hello, I am new to the fullsite=true method of mobile site to desktop site, and have recently found that about 50 of the instances in which I added fullsite=true to links from our blog show as a duplicate to the page that it is pointing to? Could someone tell me why this would be? Do I need to add some sort of rel=canonical to the main page (non-fullsite=true) or how should I approach this? Thanks in advance for your help! L

Duplicate Content Issues
We have some "?src=" tag in some URL's which are treated as duplicate content in the crawl diagnostics errors? For example, xyz.com?src=abc and xyz.com?src=def are considered to be duplicate content url's. My objective is to make my campaign free of these crawl errors. First of all i would like to know why these url's are considered to have duplicate content. And what's the best solution to get rid of this?

Development Website Duplicate Content Issue
Hi, We launched a client's website around 7th January 2013 (http://rollerbannerscheap.co.uk), we originally constructed the website on a development domain (http://dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk) which was active for around 6-8 months (the dev site was unblocked from search engines for the first 3-4 months, but then blocked again) before we migrated dev --> live. In late Jan 2013 changed the robots.txt file to allow search engines to index the website. A week later I accidentally logged into the DEV website and also changed the robots.txt file to allow the search engines to index it. This obviously caused a duplicate content issue as both sites were identical. I realised what I had done a couple of days later and blocked the dev site from the search engines with the robots.txt file. Most of the pages from the dev site had been de-indexed from Google apart from 3, the home page (dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk, and two blog pages). The live site has 184 pages indexed in Google. So I thought the last 3 dev pages would disappear after a few weeks. I checked back late February and the 3 dev site pages were still indexed in Google. I decided to 301 redirect the dev site to the live site to tell Google to rank the live site and to ignore the dev site content. I also checked the robots.txt file on the dev site and this was blocking search engines too. But still the dev site is being found in Google wherever the live site should be found. When I do find the dev site in Google it displays this; Roller Banners Cheap » admin dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk/ A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt – learn more. This is really affecting our clients SEO plan and we can't seem to remove the dev site or rank the live site in Google. In GWT I have tried to remove the sub domain. When I visit remove URLs, I enter dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk but then it displays the URL as http://www.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk/dev.rollerbannerscheap.co.uk. I want to remove a sub domain not a page. Can anyone help please?

Link Structure & Duplicate Content
I am struggling with how I should handle the link structure on my site. Right now most of my pages are like this: Home -> Department -> Service Groups -> Content Page For Example: Home -> IT Solutions -> IT Support & Managed Services -> IT Support Home -> IT Solutions -> IT Support & Managed Services -> Managed Services Home -> IT Solutions -> IT Support & Managed Services -> Help Desk Services Home -> IT Solutions -> Virtualization & Data Center Solutions -> Virtualization Home -> IT Solutions -> Virtualization & Data Center Solutions -> Data Center Solutions This structure lines up with our business and makes logical sense but I am not sure how to handle the department and service group pages. Right now you can click them and it just brings you to a page with a small snippet for the links below. The real content is on the content pages. What I am worried about is that the snippets on those pages are just a paragraph or two of the content that's on the content page. Will this hurt me and get considered duplicate content? What is the best practice for dealing with this? Those department/service group pages have some good content on them but it's just parts of other pages. Am I okay doing this because there are not direct duplicates of other pages just parts of a few pages? Any help on this would be great. Thanks in advance.

Drupal URL Aliases vs 301 Redirects + Do URL Aliases create duplicates?
Hi all! I have just begun work on a Drupal site which heavily uses the URL Aliases feature. I fear that it is creating duplicate links. For example:: we have http://www.URL.com/index.php and http://www.URL.com/ In addition we are about to switch a lot of links and want to keep the search engine benefit. Am I right in thinking URL aliases change the URL, while leaving the old URL live and without creating search engine friendly redirects such as 301s? Thanks for any help! Christian

Complex duplicate content question
We run a network of three local web sites covering three places in close proximity. Each sitehas a lot of unique content (mainly news) but there is a business directory that is shared across all three sites. My plan is that the search engines only index the business in the directory that are actually located in the place the each site is focused on. i.e. Listing pages for business in Alderley Edge are only indexed on alderleyedge.com and businesses in Prestbury only get indexed on prestbury.com - but all business have a listing page on each site. What would be the most effective way to do this? I have been using rel canonical but Google does not always seem to honour this. Will using meta noindex tags where appropriate be the way to go? or would be changing the urls structure to have the place name in and using robots.txt be a better option. As an aside my current url structure is along the lines of: http://dev.alderleyedge.com/directory/listing/138/the-grill-on-the-edge Would changing this have any SEO benefit? Thanks Martin
