301 Re-Directs Puzzling Question on Page Returned in Search Results
-
On our website, www.BusinessBroker.net, we have 3 different versions of essentially the same page for each of our State Business for Sale Pages. Back in August, we did a test and did 301 redirects using 5 States. For a long while after doing the redirects, the pages fell out of Google search results - we used to get page 1 rankings. Just recently they started popping back up on Page 1. However, I noticed that the new page meta data is not what is being picked up -- here is the example.
Keyword Searched for in Google -- "Maine Business for Sale"
Our listing shows up on Page 1 -- # 8 Result
URL returned is correct preferred version: - http://www.businessbroker.net/state/maine-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx
However, the Page Title on this returned page is still the OLD page title -
OLD TITLE -- maine Business for Sale Ads - maine Businesses for Sale & Business Brokers - Sell a Business on Business Broker
Not the title that is designated for this page -
New Title - Maine Businesses for Sale - Buy or Sell a Business in ME | BusinessBroker.net
Ditto for Meta Description.
Why is this happening?
Also have a problem with lower case showing up rather than upper case -- what's causing this?
http://www.businessbroker.net/state/maine-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx
versus -- http://www.businessbroker.net/State/Maine-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, MM

thanks - we did some more research on our end and our developer found this --
The problem with the title, description and keywords is because we updated these for just Wyoming, West Virginia, Vermont, Maine and Florida. I made the mistake of assuming the URL would always have the proper case of the state in the URL but as we have discovered that was a bad assumption. The code was looking for those 5 states with the first letter capitalized and the link from Google was not so it defaulted to the format for the other states that we haven't changed yet. I have fixed that code so now those 5 states will display the correct title, description and keywords regardless of the case of the state in the URL. I will update the live site in the morning so this issue will be taken care of. We will still need to discuss the how best to handle the URLs that Google is getting with the incorrect case.

I can't say for sure what happened last time since I am not exactly sure what you did. But as long as the 301 redirects are set up correctly and Google is not having any trouble accessing and crawling them, then you shouldn't experience any major negative results over the long term.
Now that I've read your initial post again, I see that the Maine page is one of the States you tried to redirect as part of your test. However, as I posted above, the old page is not being 301 redirected to the new page, so Google may have dropped your site in the rankings since you essentially had two very similar pages competing against each other for the same terms.

The page that is ranking #8 in Google for me is http://www.businessbroker.net/state/maine-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx, and on that page, it has the old Title tag and it is not redirected to the version of the URL with the new Title tag.
When I visit http://www.businessbroker.net/State/Maine-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx, I am seeing the new Title tag.
Since these are two completely different pages you will need to 301 redirect the URL with the old Title tag to the new one. That should solve your problems.

follow up question regarding the upper and lower case question from our web developer ---
The question hasn't been how to do it. The question is what happens to all of the pages that are indexed by Google improperly when we do this? Are we going to see the same thing as when we redirected the states with a big drop for 6 months?

Thanks for the response, appreciate it. I'm pretty confident we re-directed the non-preferred URLs to this preferred page --
http://www.businessbroker.net/State/Maine-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx
This page has the updated Title Tag, Meta Description, etc. however, is not the one that shows up in the Google Search Result for "Maine Business for Sale"

I visited the page http://www.businessbroker.net/state/maine-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx and the Title tag in the HTML is "maine Business for Sale Ads - maine Businesses for Sale & Business Brokers - Sell a Business on Business Broker" so perhaps you did not publish the new versions of the Title tags?
As for your lower case/upper case issue, I went to both URLs and they both resolve to an active page. I would suggest making the URLs consistent to minimize the risk of duplicate content. First, I would set the designated URL in the rel="canonical" tag for each page. And depending on the type of server, I would suggest forcing the URLs to 301 redirect to a single version of the URL. Here is a good blog post on how to address this specific issue - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/common-technical-seo-problems-and-how-to-solve-them

301 Question - issue
A while back we had a 'bleed' on one of our sites, which basically meant one of our sites started to leak across pages to another and that site started to rank for the same pages and now we have hundreds of pages ranking for urls that do not exists. It's hard to explain, bare with me. If you were to click on the cached view in Google for the ranked page it would show you the main site, but if you were to click it as usual, then you would be taken to the site but a 404 would show as the intended page was not for that site. We believe we fixed the 'bleed' and have setup 301s for all the affected pages to go to the home page for the site it affected. But these pages have not been removed from Google, which we thought a 301 would do. So we still have hundreds of pages being ranked but are redirected to the home page. Why hasn't these pages been removed?

301 redirect to search results page?
Hi - we just launched our redesigned website. On the previous site, we had multiple .html pages that contained links to supporting pdf documentation. On this new site, we no longer have those .html landing pages containing the links. The question came up, should we do a search on our site to gather a single link that contains all pdf links from the previous site, and set up a redirect? It's my understanding that you wouldn't want google to index a search results page on your website. Example: old site had the link http://www.oldsite.com/technical-documents.html new site, to see those same links would be like: http://www.newsite.com/resources/search?View+Results=&f[]=categories%3A196

Viewing search results for 'We possibly have internal links that link to 404 pages. What is the most efficient way to check our sites internal links?
We possibly have internal links on our site that point to 404 pages as well as links that point to old pages. I need to tidy this up as efficiently as possible and would like some advice on the best way to go about this.

Pagination and View All Pages Question. We currently don't have a canonical tag pointing to View all as I don't believe it's a good user experience so how best we deal with this.
Hello All, I have an eCommerce site and have implemented the use rel="prev" and rel="next" for Page Pagination. However, we also have a View All which shows all the products but we currently don't have a canonical tag pointing to this as I don't believe showing the user a page with shed loads of products on it is actually a good user experience so we havent done anything with this page. I have a sample url from one of our categories which may help - http://goo.gl/9LPDOZ This is obviously causing me duplication issues as well . Also , the main category pages has historically been the pages which ranks better as opposed to Page 2, Page 3 etc etc. I am wondering what I should do about the View All Page and has anyone else had this same issue and how did they deal with it. Do we just get rid of the View All even though Google says it prefers you to have it ? I also want to concentrate my link juice on the main category pages as opposed being diluted between all my paginated pages ? - Does anyone have any tips on how to best do this and have you seen any ranking improvement from this ? Any ideas greatly appreciated. thanks Peter

Mobile Search Results Include Pages Meant Only for Desktops/Laptops
When I put in site:www.qjamba.com on a mobile device it comes back with some of my mobile-friendly pages for that site(same url for mobile and desktop-just different formatting), and that's great. HOWEVER, it also shows a whole bunch of the pages (not identified by Google as mobile-friendly) that are fine for desktop users but are not supposed to exist for the mobile users, because they are too slow. Until a few days ago those pages were being redirected for mobile users to the home page. I since have changed that to 404 not founds. Do we know that Google keeps a mobile index separate from the desktop index? If so, I would think that 404 should work.. How can I test whether the 404 not founds will remove a url so they DON'T appear on a mobile device when I put in site:www.qjamba.com (or a user searches) but DO appear on a desktop for the same command.

Pages Returning A 403 Error
Hiya Moz Community I hope you are all great, I have a question regarding one of my websites, I have the main site and 2 sub folder sites essentially, I decided to upgrade one of the sites and placed it in a different sub folder, I then set up a 301 redirect to the new location, so far so good, I have been having a look at my link profile using AHrefs, inside there is an SEO report facility, I ran the report and I have over 500 pages returning a 403 or Forbidden error. my question is whether the Equity from those pages is being passed to the new site? I actually removed all the old site from Google Cache to avoid misleading visitors, I suppose I could set the re-directs up manually if I the equity is not being passed to the new site although I was under the impression it would be, or 85% - 90% of it would be anyway. The reason why I am asking is that I have seen a significant drop in rankings for keywords that my site has always ranked highly for. thought I would see if you guys can clear that up for me. Thanks and regards Wes Dunn

301 redirect for page 2, page 3 etc of an article or feed
Hey guys, We're looking to move a blog feed we have to a new static URL page. We are using 301 redirects but I'm unsure of what to regarding page 2, page 3 etc. of the feed. How do I make sure those urls are being redirected as well? For example: Moving FloridaDentist.com/blog/dental-tips/ to a new page url FloridaDentist.com/dental-tips. So, we are using a 301 on that old url to the new one. My questions is what to do with the other pages like FloridaDentist.com/blog/dental-tips/page/3. How do we make sure that page is also 301'd to the new main url?

Redirect Chains - Accept the 301 chain or link from the original page??
Hi everyone, I have a client that re-launched his site and it's gone from 100 pages to 1000 (new languages/increased product pages etc) We've used 301's to map the old site to the new database driven site. BUT the new site is creating extremely long URL's: e.g. www.example.com/example_example_example/example_example_example_example Obviously I want to change these URL's: THE PROBLEM..... I am worried about the Chain Redirects. I know two 301 redirects is okay (although it's not great), but I wonder if there is an alternative: When I've implemented the new URL structure the chain will look like this: www.oldsite.com 301 redirects to www.newsitewithdodgyurls.com which then 301 redirects to www.mynewsitewithgreaturls.com Seeing as the new site has only been live for a month, and hasn't really gained many external links, should I: 301 from the original site (www.oldsite.com) straight to the new site (www.mynewsitewithgreaturls.com)? If so, what would I do with the pages that I have not redirected? Let them 404? OR Leave the 301 chain in place? Your advice, and any other suggestions would be much appreciated Thanks
