      I'm wondering if there is a duplication issue with having a singular AND plural version of a keyword in the Title Tag.

      For example: Wood Desk - Wood Desks| Furniture Store

      Would this help or hurt my ranking for this URL? I can’t find a concrete answer for this under Moz’s “Title Tag SEO Best Practices Page.”

        Basically yes, if you were to come up under the query "Wood Desk" google would highlight Wood Desks .

          True true. SERPs for a singular will not be 100% the same as SERPs for the plural in many cases but there are often overlaps. Keyword research will help in determination of which may be the better trafficked and/or more valuable term. Natural inclusion in the body can potentially make up for lack of inclusion in the title. Also, considering that Google will in some cases change your title and description to better suit a searcher's query for which you are also relevant, you can't rely too heavily on title optimization alone as a factor in your ranking though it is a viable signal.

            You said that Wood Desk and Wood Desks are the first two keywords. Are you suggesting that because "Wood Desk" is within "Wood Desks", that Google counts both keywords?

              Singular and plural search results vary and are still treated differently and if that's what you want to rank for (which was his question) i would recommend it in both the title tag and also include both singular and plural in the body content a couple times of course.

              I definitely agree though it needs to be reader friendly from a marketing perspective, and also since title tag is limited space, doing keyword research might help you uncover a secondary keyword phrase that might be more valuable than including a plural or singular secondary keyword phrase.

                I don't know that anybody can give you a concrete answer. I can say that having a plural and non plural keyword will not outright cause any penalty as our website uses this strategy for some of our pages. These pages have been ranked as far back as 50+ and over the last year have found their way to top 10 results.

                In your example the more daming issue would be the repetitive "Wood" in the title then the plural versions. When creating a title tag I find that it is very easy to get caught up in the keywords which is not good, you should focus on clearly and directly describing your page that is after all what the "Title" is for. Further harm can be done by focusing on just a couple keywords as you inadvertently discount long tail keywords, which can be as powerful as keywords you focus on. The best approach is to know your keywords, use them in the title and accurately title your page.

                To expand on your example..

                Wood Desks - Home Student Office Desk designs by | Furniture Store

                This tile has both Wood Desk and Wood Desks as its first 2 keywords, and uses nearly all the remaining characters to include more information about what would be found on this page. I'm also not a fan of ending with Brand / Domain unless it is going to be heavily marketed.

                  In most cases Google is smart enough to understand that a page relevant for "Wood Desk" could or should show up in searches for "Wood Desks" and vice versa. As such, it's not really necessary to make sure that you shoehorn in all of the plurals and singulars of your core terms. Worry about it more from a Human standpoint. Making the title more human accessible will help with clickthroughs, visits, and so on. Forcing multiple variations of the same word into a title in order to attempt catching every variable will probably make people skip over you. And ultimately, getting the qualified traffic is what much of SEO is about.

                    Desk and Desks is good but wood twice is not 😉  find strongest primary and secondary matches

                    Assuming the plural is more valuable than the singular, and wood is more valuable than wooden

                    <title>Buy Wood Desks | Wooden Desk Sets | Bob's Discount Furniture</title>

                    Assuming the singular is more valuable, and wooden is more valuable than wood

                    <title>Buy Wooden Desk Sets | Wood Desks | Bobs Discount Furniture</title>

                      Using a hyphen in title tags and the impact of spaces

                      Hi I am trying to arrive at a best practice template for a title tag for my organization so does the following template still holds Primary Keyword - Secondary Keyword | Brand Name will anything be impacted  if I eliminate the spaces between the hyphen, will search bots be still able to treat the first one as a priority and the second as the secondary?                       Using keywords in my URL: Doing a redirect to /keyword

                      My website in "On Page Grade" received an A.Anyway, I only have 1 thing to optimize:_"Use Keywords in your URL__Using your targeted keywords in the URL string adds relevancy to your page for search engine rankings, assists potential visitors identify the topic of your page from the URL, and provides SEO value when used as the anchor text of referring links."_My website is ranking in top10 for a super high competitive keyword and all my others competitors have the keyword on their domain, but not for my URL.Since I can't change my domain for fixing this suggestion, I would like to know what do you think about doing a 301 redirect from / to mydomainname.com/keyword/So the index of my website would be the /keyword.I don't know if this can make a damage to my SERP for the big change ir it would be a great choice.

                      KeyWord Density?

                      What is an acceptable density for a keyword? It's wise to push it as close to spam without sacrificing user experience, correct? I read an article on SeoMoz (outdated I think) that mentioned 6%. If it's a keyword phrase, do you have to make sure you don't go over the density level of a particular word in the phrase. If it's a three word phrase, do you have to not use any one word more than X% or just monitor the exact keyword.

                      Changing Link Title Tags & Backlinks

                      On 4/19/12 I began changing the link title tags in an effort to further optimize my website. I thought they were excessively long and it would be beneficial to make them more concise. On 4/26/12 my website traffic began to fall drastically and I'm not sure if it is from google's penguin update or from changing the link title tags. I started looking into the sudden drop of traffic and realized that when I run the site explorer tool on all of the pages I changed, the URL is redirecting. It appears that the backlinks are not passing through to the new URL. Before I Changed the Link Title Tag: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.beautystoponline.com%2FAndis-Professional-Hair-Clippers-s%2F102150.htm **After I Changed the Link Title Tag: ** http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.beautystoponline.com%2FAndis-Clippers-s%2F102150.htm So my questions are: The above example shows that the old title tag (www.beautystoponline.com/Andis-Professional-Hair-Clippers-s/102150.htm) has 43 backlinks and the new one (www.beautystoponline.com/Andis-Professiona-Hair-Clippers-s/102150.htm) has 0. Will the links eventually be attributed to the new URL. I understand that the user will still be directed to my website they click the any of the backlinks, but will the link juice pointing the old URL pass through the new one? Would it be better, in the long run, to continue optimizing the link title tags.

                      Need help with fluctuating ranking for a specific keyword

                      my website www.totalmanagement.com fluctuates for the search term: web based property management software I have been using SEO Moz for a few months now and have managed to get to the top 5 and jump around between 3 and 5. Does anyone have any suggestions to assist me? Long term goal is also to really target: Property Management Software But I am still very new at this. Thanks in advance for the help!

                      Title and Heading Tags

                      Firstly I would like to comment on how helpful this site is. I haven't posted much before but have been reading tonnes of answers for many months now and have been finding it really useful. I used the SEOmoz scanner and the main problem highlighted was duplicate content so I started to add 'customer product reviews' I had received and unique 'further information' to each page (hopefully this was the right thing to do to solve duplicate content! : ) ) Then I looked at heading and title tags. Currently I set title tags for each product page to be "Brand Name- Product Name" but after doing some research we are thinking of putting Keyword Description of Product | Product Name | Brand Name (around 60 characters long). So is this the advised thing to do and create unique titles that are relevant to each specific product page for over 200 pages we have? In addition, any advice on setting optimum tags would be great. We keep reading varying tips online. I gather ideally h1 needs to be a shorter keyword rich version of the title tag? Many Thanks

                      Tag clouds: good for internal linking and increase of keyword relevant pages?

                      As Matt Cutts explained, tag clouds are OK if you're not engaged in keyword stuffing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYPX_ZmhLqg) - i.e. if you're not putting in 500 tags. I'm currently creating tags for an online-bookseller; just like Amazon this e-commerce-site has potentially a couple of million books. Tag clouds will be added to each book detail page in order to enrich each of these pages with relevant keywords both for search engines and users (get a quick overview over the main topics of the book; navigate the site and find other books associated with each tag). Each of these book-specific tag clouds will hold up to 50 tags max, typically rather in the range of up to 10-20. From an SEO perspective, my question is twofold: 1. Does the site benefit from these tag clouds by improving the internal linking structure? 2. Does the site benefit from creating lots of additional tag-specific-pages (up to 200k different tags) or can these pages become a problem, as they don't contain a lot of rich content as such but rather lists of books associated with each tag?
