Meta description and Meta Keywords
-
Hi,
We are new to SEO and have some meta Q's
Should Meta descriptions and meta keywords be different on every page?
Is it bad to have the same meta data repeated on the site?
If it has to be different does it have to be totally different per page of just slightly different?
Should the description contain keywords is there an advantage to that?
Thanks

Hi few last quick question.
Are "Meta Keywords" and "Meta Keyword Tags" the same thing?
I am going through each page and adding
- Meta Title Tags (Unique and 70 chars or less)
- Meta Descriptions (Not unique same on every page)
Is this correct and all I need? And how long should the Meta Description be, is there a limit?
Sorry I know this is basic stuff but I want to get the basics 100% correct or else we are doomed from the start!
Thanks
Andrew

Both meta title and description should be unique and also not too short or too long or Google will replace it with whatever they feel is more relevant.
The meta title is VERY important to SEO and keywords need to be well researched and crafted.
The meta description does not effect rankings, and should be written from a marketing perspective for best CTR. That might mean having one instance of the keyword in the sentence to make it appear more relevant (that is what I usually do) but it doesn't help with SEO.
The meta keywords can hurt you if you stuff it, but if you populate it with a couple of phrases, and don't repeat any you should be fine. I just wouldn't waste too much time on the keywords tag because Google ignores it.

Meta description tags should be as unique per page as possible.
Is it bad to have the same meta data repeated on the site?
Yes
If it has to be different does it have to be totally different per page of just slightly different?
Slightly different at a minimum. Common examples might be a service that is done in multiple locations and you tweak the description to highlight the different location, but the service itself is the same.
Should the description contain keywords is there an advantage to that?
Absolutely, just don't stuff words in a way that is, well, disgusting. Remember that "meta description" may be used as the summary of the page in your search result for the given page.
Don't use meta keywords tag.
1) Search engines don't really pay attention and 2) your announcing to your competitors the keywords you are trying to opitimize for.

Ranking for combined version of keyword but not separated version
Hi All, My site is currently ranking on page 1 for the term "golfholidays" but is ranking at the bottom of page 3 for the term I am targeting and have optimised for, which is "golf holidays". Does anyone have any experience with the combined keyword ranking above the singular version? Nowhere on my page doesn't it mention the term "golfholidays" and backlinks to my site mostly use the anchor "golf holdiays" Thanks!

Is there a way to EDIT the description that appears under my sitelinks?!
I know you can't add Sitelinks since Google does it automatically but is there a way to edit the description that appears on the sitelinks? It's not the same as the meta description I've written for my landing pages. The keyword where you can see the sitelinks is Digital Media Construction.

Meta Description Being Picked up from another site!?
Hi, when we search for a phrase (which is the most searched for phrase for our company) the meta description which is displayed isnt the one we set, and it hasnt picked it up from any text on the page. The description is incorrect, it says we have an office in a city that we dont, and it just isnt a very good description generally. What has been suggested to us by our website developers is that the description is being picked up by google from a website which lists companies details. The description which is displayed on that website, is the same as the description which is shown for our company in the search results. But is it possible for Google to ignore the meta description which is set in our homepage and the other text on the home page, and pickup the text from another website and use it as our description? Many Thanks

When do I change out my meta tags after a full website revamp?
We're creating a new version of our entire website - look and feel is completely different, though core functionality and results are the same. Just cleaner, faster.. etc. We're doing a temp redirect to the temporary url for testing and to slow roll the release to some of our users for a more friendly approach. Eventually, the new look and feel will be under the original url. I've researched best practices for the site transfer, including "make sure the meta tags for title and description are exactly the same". The concern I have is that Moz Analytics is detecting a lot of errors in the existing meta tags. They're too long, have changed and become inconsistent after being passed through different hands, & some have some keyword stuffing in there. I have plans to change them out and really clean them up... I'm just wondering, when is the best time to do that? Since the tags are bad, should I just do it now but make sure that the old and new are matching? Or should I wait (and for how long?) after the new site is switched over and everything is on the original URL?

Google description problem
Hi all, My website is www.ipbskinning.com I'm having a problem with how my site is appearing in google. I have this in the head of my website: <meta name='<a class="attribute-value">description</a>' content='<a class="attribute-value">Free and Custom IPB Skins for Invision Power Board.</a>'/> Yet when I google 'ipbskinning' it says: Solid Skins. 1We test all our skins in all browsers to insure that they are compatible. This ensures that your users have the best user experience. which is random text from the content of my site. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks a lot all

UK and US subdomain. Can both rank for some keyword terms?
One of my clients has one root domain http://www.website.com and there are two versions, the US and the UK. So there are two subdomains uk.website.com and us.website.com. Both subdomains contain similar content/landing pages and are going after the same keywords. One site is supposedly crawled by UK crawlers but still shows up in US-based SERPS. Will Google take into account that both subdomains are going for the same keyword terms and only rank one of them? How is this kind of thing handled?

Keyword and URL
I have a client who has a popular name (like 'Joe Smith'). His blog URL has only his first name and the name of his company in it, like joe.company.com. His blog doesn't rank well at all in the first 3-4 Google SERPs. I was thinking of advising him to change the URL of his blog to joesmith.company.com, and having his webmaster do 301 redirects from the old URL to the new one. Do you think this is a good strategy, or would you recommend something else? I realize ranking isn't just about the URL, it's about links, etc. But I think making his URL more specific to his name could help. Any advice greatly appreciated! Jim
