301 redirects, efficiency and dynamic URLs
-
Hi,
I have 2 301 redirect questions.
Question 1:
I have am working with a designer on the redesign of a website that currently has over 5,000 indexed pages. The majority of these are dynamic URLs from the Stone Locator database. (see below)
http://www.domain.com/storelocator.php?zipcode=91784&page=12
How can I efficiently deal with these pages from an SEO perspective when developing the new site?
Is there a way to do a bulk 301 redirect to a store locator page, for instance?
Question 2:
If a rel=canonical tag has been established on a page (www....), is it necessary to add 301 redirects to all of the other versions on:
-
the home page (domain.com , domain.com/index.html, domain.com/index.html, etc.)
-
all other pages with those same extensions
?
Thank you for your help!
Erin

Hello Again Erin,
- 301s are used for 2 purposes. One way is to tell or direct bots to crawl the other page and it will send linkjuices to the new page. The second way is to redirect visitors to a new page. If you are bulk redirecting all pages to the home page, it is kind of a waste. Visitors want to visit a specific page but then you redirect them to the home page? They will be frustated since it is not what they are looking for and may leave your page. Bad user experience. Furthermore, sending link juices to the home page might also be a waste.
The best practice will be redirecting specific pages to a new specific page. For example, Page A on old domain is about bikes, you want to redirect it to Page A on the new domain about bikes. One, it will transfer all the old linkjuice on bikes to the new one and visitors are redirected to a page where they want.
- The canonical tag is for bots to know that you want one version to be crawled over the ones. 301 is kind of for visitors as well and redirecing linkjucies. Depending on whether you want your visitors to visit only one version, then you might want to use the 301. Furthermore, if different versions of your page is getting backlinks, maybe use 301 to send the linkjuice back to the canonical page.
Hope this helps.

Dynamic links & duplicate content
Hi there, I am putting a proposal together for a client whose website has been optimised to include many dynamic links and so there are many pages with duplicate content: only the page title, h1 and URL is different. My client thinks this isn't an issue. What is the current consensus on this? Many thanks in advance.

Placement of key words in URL
I notice that the MOZ Page Grader considers "/keyword1/keyword2-keyword3" in a URL string to be less effective than "/keyword1-keyword2-keyword3". Is this correct from Google's perspective? If I am trying to maximise my SEO for the page title "Business building tips", for example, does Google think my URL is more relevant if it's in the form: 1. www.website.com/business-building-tips
On-Page Optimization | | Gavin.Atkinson
2. www.website.com/business/building-tips or
3. www.website.com/business/business-building-tips My instinct tells me 3 is more powerful, but logic tells me if I have a whole section devoted to "business" and one of those pages is "business building tips" then 2 should work just as well, possibly better?0 -
Page Titles For Local - Help on URL Structure
Trying to figure out the best way to construct localized urls for the dental website. For example, If I have the URL:
On-Page Optimization | | Czubmeister
http://www.kooskidental.com/services/cosmetic-dentistry/
and If I want to make it local to the city I would use: http://www.kooskidental.com/services/richardson-tx-cosmetic-dentistry/ But what happens is that I have other options off the menu like: http://www.koooskidental.com/services/richardson-tx-cosmetic-dentistry/teeth-whitening/ But if I am trying to rank for richardson tx teeth whitening, I would have to do http://www.koooskidental.com/services/richardson-tx-cosmetic-dentistry/richardson-tx-teeth-whitening/ But that's pretty long and ugly and I don't think I need richardson-tx in their twice. If I am trying to rank for richardson tx cosmetic dentistry and richardson tx teeth whitening, what would be the best structure for the url's?0 -
Dates in URL's
I have an issue of duplicate content errors and duplicate page titles which is penalising my site. This has arisen because a number of URLs are suffixed by date(s) and have been spidered . In principle I do not want any url with a suffixed date to be spidered. Eg:- www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm/06_07_13/13_07_13 http://www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm/20_07_13/27_07_13 Only this URL should be spidered:- http://www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm I have over 10,000 of these duplicates and firstly wish to remove them on block from Google ( not one by one ) and secondly wish to amend my robots.txt file so the URL's are not spidered. I do not know the format for either. Can anyone help please.

Hi Guys, Just have a small problem with a htaccess 301 redirect. I would like to 301: www.old-domain.com & old-domain.com to www.new-domain.com. The site is exactly the same with the same directory structure so i would also like all the subpages to work. Eg: www.old-domain.com/folder/page & old-domain.com/folder/page to www.new-domain.com/folder/page Many thanks

Wordpress pages URL's redirection.
I was checking W3C Markup Validation and in report it was shown that that pages (not post or any other URL's just PAGES) at investmentcontrarians.com are 301 redirected. e.g. original URL "http://www.investmentcontrarians.com/debt-crisis" which is redirected to "http://www.investmentcontrarians.com/debt-crisis/" I know that its not that serious issue, but still want to know why only pages are being redirected and how can we avoid it.

URL Rewrite
(By Google Traductor) Hello, I wanted to ask about some changes that we are evaluating for the issue of passing the url with variables to be more descriptive, for example: http://www.agroads.com.ar/detalle.asp?clasi=139592 tohttp://www.agroads.com.ar/humedimetro-para-cereales-draminski-gmm-139592.html In this case corresponds to the breakdown of a product if you have long published andcan be well positioned to change the title of this position would be lost unless youmanage it with a 301, as one would manage when you have more than 30000 products and title may change several times? There are tools to manage this? Finally, we must apply this to all listed with their respective filters, recommends doingtheir part with 301 redirects and analyze what funciene well to continue with the rest or implement a complete change? I hope I can bring a little light to implement this. Greetings and thanks! Roberto
