Google analytics question
-
Ok so in my traffic sources break down I have 3 sections: direct, organic, and referral. My question is under the referral tab I have recently noticed a new traffic source, my own website....
How is this possible? My top referring site is my own website.... Is this considered direct traffic or how is this being traced?

The other 2 areas that most frequently cause this kind of problem are cross-domain tracking and subdomain tracking.
Cross domain tracking usually comes from trying to track 3rd party shopping carts on eCommerce-oriented sites.
Subdomain errors come from adding a subdomain to your site and just adding the same tracking code to your subdomain pages as your main site.
In both of these instances, the tracking code needs to be customized slightly to collect the data correctly.
If your own website is the biggest source of referral traffic, you have a significant problem which needs to be tracked down. It means not only is your referral info incorrect, but a lot of your other stats (total visits, pages/visit. time per page, even bounce rate) are also incorrect.

It should also be noted that even with a completely proper setup of Google Analytics, some self-referrals are 'normal'. Anytime a user waits 30 minutes between clicks on your site, it will initiate a new session, and thus, a self-referral.
Obviously, it's not TOO common for this to happen, so your total self-referrals should always be a very small percentage of total referrals.
If you're seeing a LOT of self-referrals, as others have said, the most common cause is a page or pages that are missing the code.

If you are using WordPress hosted site and using All in SEO Plugin, just install the codvalue option. Sometimes installing your code in the theme might give you error like this.
Do not install twice, that might give you double traffic in google analystic.

I would agree with mememax - usually this means one or more pages doesn't have the Analytics code. They go to "your site" (with the Analytics), then they go to another site (no tag) and back to your site (with Analytics).
That cycle will create a "new" session - referred from your own domain, just a page without the code.
Good luck finding it!

Hi James, that seems weird. Are you sure that you've included the analytics code in all your webpages? Maybe one page don't have your code so analytics may think that is an external source even if it's an internal link... dig into your referral, see the url which sent the visit and check the html code.

Was Google Analytics and Adsense Down Today?
For the last 4 hours of so we were registering zero users and Adsense reporting has not changed. We checked the site, and there were no problems. It seems for some reason there was no reporting. Just now it came back up and we are showing live traffic. Trying to figure out if this was a problem specific to us or if it is on Google's end. Thanks,

Pandora in Google Analytics
Hi Mozers, in Google Analytics our ads are registering a 10 second page duration and a 90% bounce rate, which is pretty atrocious. My questions are: Organic page duration is 3:15 minutes, and Social + Referral are similar. Yet Pandora is bringing the average time on site way down, to less than a minute. Will those paid ad metrics be factored to the User Behavior and therefore negative affect our overall rankings? In other words does Google now see our page duration as less than a minute? The Pandora rep says that Google Analytics and Pandora have "systemic issues" such that GA is very inaccurate with Pandora metrics. I find that difficult to believe. Any insights here? Thanks all! Jane

Is there a way to find out who the admin of a Google Analytics account is?
We have a client who has been searching high and low to gain access to the GA account that is tied to their website, but previous agencies keep stating they don't have access. Is there a way to find out who the admins are on a GA account with the tracking number so we can reach out to that person and ask them to admin the client?

Google Analytics
Looking at a client's analytics - one page doesn't seem to record 'average time on page' data (it just displays 0.00 despite it receiving traffic) This isn't an issue for the rest of the website's pages. Any idea? http://www.smilestyledental.co.uk/ppc/general-dentistry-at-smile-style.html thanks for any help!

Google Analytics session update question
Hello, With reference to seomoz blog post - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/panda-24-and-analytics-session-update-rolled-out-simultaneously#jtc151292 , i would like clarification about the following - User searches Google for "Product Name" and clicks on your AdWords advertisement. User leaves site and searches a few more times, click on competition and comparing prices and features. User ultimately decides to with your product, Googles "Your Brand + Product Name", clicks your organic listing, and buys the product. This whole process takes less than 30 minutes. "Your Brand + Product Name" will appear in your organic keyword report with 1 visit. My question is whether "Product Name" will also appear in organic keyword report with 1 visit if the visitor is not signed in. ( as search won't be encrypted ) Thanks

Has Anyone Else Noticed A Jump In Google Analytics Traffic Since Session Parameters Were Changed?
Ever since Google Analytics changed their session parameters August 12th I have seen a 20% jump in organic traffic & bounce rates along with a decline in pages/visit and conversion rate. To be clear, I don't put a whole heck of a lot of stock in these metrics as stand-alone indications of how my site is performing. I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this blip. I noticed some other people mentioned a similar phenomenon in other SEO forums and blog comments, but nobody seems to be talking about this here at SEOMoz (unless I just haven't looked in the right place). I'm not saying the change I noticed has anything to do with the session update, I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar so that I can either cross it off the list of possible causes or explore further.
