Social button yes or social button no...
-
Hi everybody!
It's quite clear that if you have a pretty, clean, compact html code on your website, Google loves you as a lovely mom does with her kids.
But it's not a dream world and you have actually to choose between social and clean code.
In fact to add, for example, the Facebook social button, you have to include some files from the Facebook servers. Even though the googlebot doesn't download them (but people do, with page optimization decreasing), it reads some javascript code. Moreover you have to add some code where you want the button appears.
I think it hasn't much sense for the googlebot, so that could it be punitive for your website / page to place that bunch of code?
In the end my question is the following:
Does the social power win against negative factors like additional files to download and a bunch of ugly code in your body?
social power > bad factors (file downloading+more code)?

Thanks for your reply Jamie.
I think there's not only black and white in code writing. Theoretically you have to produce perfect html/xhtml W3C standards compliant code but you also have to face many changes in standards, the needs of your website, cost ties, velocity issues etc. For example, if you try to validate the piece of code I placed upon, using xhtml 1.1 standard, the w3c website will warn you because you can't use not supported attributes.
It's clear: Google doesn't need to follow standards, beacuse Google makes the standard, but what really Google thinks about my site without Facebook buttons is the same as it would think with them? For example if I insert the following piece of code which is a tag that describes the entity your page represents, what's the googlebot's impression?
In the end also a visitor will perceive the difference, if he will have to wait additional secs, waiting for the file download, especially if he uses an old single download channel browser.
I don't know if the sum of all theese issues exceedes the advantages. Does someone has some evidence about it?

Hello,
How do you measure "clean, compact code"? As far as I am aware the primary measurement is code validation as per W3C standards (http://validator.w3.org). I checked the line of code you shared and it is valid HTML5 code.
Google has the ability to crawl invalid code as well. There are millions of sites and many of them use invalid code, including Google.com. I always recommend using valid code but just because code is invalid does not mean Google will have any problem crawling or indexing your site. Each error needs to be evaluated.
In the case above, there does not seem to be any problem with the code so I do not see any concern in using it. Aside from code optimization, I would still use it. Social media has been shown to offer a greater traffic boost then any other factor. It's a must for your website.

How to reach beyond main social accounts
My blog is still very young - and I feel like a total newbie, but I'm working at it consistently. I've got 21 posts that I've put up since the beginning of January (except for 2 from October) and another in the pipeline and of course, plans to continue on this way. I've been building up my confidence and feel like it's just about time to branch out farther than my Google+, FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts (which I've been doing regularly). My hope is to gain more visitors by publicizing the posts in some other environments. I would so appreciate some suggestions on how I might do that. And also, is it too soon? I don't want to jump the gun before there's an respectable/acceptable amount of content.

B2B Social Media Creeping
I recently posted an (insightful) comment in a LinkedIn group. I can see that someone from this group has taken a look at my profile, so I'm assuming that they read my comment and they were at least a little intrigued as to who exactly I was. I would regard this person as a prospect. Maybe a slightly unlikely prospect as there's a couple thousand miles that separate us geographically. I'm wondering what sort of etiquette/best practices there are for connecting somehow with this person/company. Initially I thought I'd follow them on Twitter, maybe like them on Facebook, but they have no such presence. I like the idea of connecting with them that way because it's a 'soft' connection - not too aggressive. Doing something like emailing or calling and saying 'Hey, saw that you looked at my LinkedIn profile', seems creepy & desperate. Even sending an invitation to connect seems a little too forward. I feel the only thing to do is to continue to involve myself in this group by posting thoughtful & insightful comments in order to get noticed further that way.

Like .vs Share Button - for SEO which is better?
I personally from what I have read believe the share button to be more powerful when it comes to SEO but I don't know for a fact so anyone have any input on this subject? One thing I do know, is it's a lot harder to gain a 'Share' then a 'Like' and im talking about these buttons being onsite maybe in a blog post. If you gained 100 shares and 100 likes which one would generate the best signals? Thanks

How to best promote this content via social media to gain backlinks
I have created this content http://www.musicliveuk.com/live-music/the-worst-function-bands-and-wedding-bands-ever in order to promote it via social media. Ideally I want it to be shared across the web in order to gain backlinks. My question is how can I best do this? I know I can post it on twitter, facebook, google plus etc... but is that it? I'm new to social media and don't really understand how to use it to good effect. By posting it on social networking sites am I risking people copying the content and duplicate content penalties? Any help would be much appreciated!

SEO w/o Social Webinair experiment - how can RTs of a URL of a google search possibly affect the position of one of the search results?
I missed the webinair but have just been going through the slides. Looking forward to watching the video when its up. I have a question however regarding the experiment conducted by Rand to find out: Is Social Influencing Primary Algorithms (slides 7 - 20) The suggestion is that an RT of a google search URL affects the ranking of one individual ranking site. The +1 side of the experiment I understand completely - it is clear how Google can see that there is a social preference for the site and reward accordingly. But how would retweeting the search result URL possibly affect its rankings? Is the suggestion that those doing the experiment also clicked on the relevant link? And if so, how is Google discerning that this additional traffic is down to Twitter? I feel I am missing something incredibly obvious. Anyone want to help me out here?... otherwise I'm not going to sleep tonight...

Custom Social Media icons: Good or bad?
Hi guys, In our never-ending search for better SEO strategies and results, our journey has led us to question the idea of creating custom social media icons for our site. We are wondering if anyone has had experience, either negative or positive, by using these icons, or if there is no difference at all? I would like to make it clear that we are only thinking about customizing the icons that lead to our Facebook page, Twitter profile, YouTube channel, etc. NOT the like/share/tweet/etc buttons. We understand the negative effects in changing those icons, but are interested in knowing if creating general icons that match our design will be a good or bad thing. Any replies are appreciated, thanks!

Does social media really work?
I just finished a 2 week test using Twitter. The person running the test was tweeting for 1 hour every day, but the tweets were broken up into several different times throughout the day. She engaged in conversations, retweeted, posted interested and catchy topics and linked to our blog. By the end of the test, we only saw a 7% increase in traffic to the blog. There was no noticeable increase in sales. According to an article I read by Business Insider, Applied Predictive Technologies ran a test to help companies like Starbucks measure the impact of social media. They concluded that social media accounted for a 2% increase in sales. That's not much for the time and money that goes into it. What's your experience with social media? When I first posted this, I neglected to say this Twitter account is one we have been activly using for about 2 years, and we have posted to it at least once or twice every day for the last couple of years. And, we are a well established company for the past 8 years, and we regularily submit press releases and have written 2 articles per day on our blog for several years.
