Broken Links/Images Non Optimized Content Help
-
Hello,
After 4 years of incorrect blog creation and 4000 blog posts I have seen the light.
I have implemented a new theme, SEO friendly, based on a yoast website report and have been creating timeless blogs with correct structure.
However, I have 5400 broken links and images based on the Broken Link Checker.
Additionally, of our 2500 blog posts which are on app reviews, only 500 are optimized so I have been painstakingly been going through each to optimize, while balancing new content output.
The trouble is Google is seeing massive changes and we are tumbling in search.
Any suggestions on how to approach this as it is my understanding that the broken links/images are doing considerable damage to our website overall.
the website is crazymikesapps.com
thank you
Mike

Also regarding fixing the broken links - the reason I asked about what caused them to break is that, if a couple of permalink structure changes are responsible for the bulk of them, it's likely possible to fix most of them with just one or two rewrite rules.
This will be vastly quicker than manually redirecting each one, and will be much better for your site, as that many individual redirects is going to slow down your site.

Ah - guess I misunderstood the question. If you're asking should you fix the errors quickly or slowly, I'd definitely recommend fixing them as quickly as possible. There's no upside to dragging the process out.
As to the importance, I'd say it's very important. First, for all of those broken pages that might have old incoming links to them, you'll be rescuing the value of those links. which will help your site rank. (I'm assuming you're redirecting the broken pages to appropriate existing ones)
Secondly, but just as important, you'll be fixing the user experience on your site. Nothing lowers a user's trust & enjoyment of a site quicker than constantly coming upon broken images and links that don't work.
Hope that helps;
Paul

Paul,
Actually, we did not change the permalink structure this go around. We have a professional development house assist us.
The 5,400 are from my permalink changes over the years, which have created these issues. So I am going through all 4400 blog posts, so far only 2000 left and removing them.
Some of my questions were: 1) is it better to do this all at once 2) how important is it to fix broken images/links
I got some feedback from a guy on Warrior Forum who was helpful, as well as my developer and I appreciate any feedback you may offer.
After 4 years I have finally figured out correct page structure, too bad this did not come sooner
thank you

Mike, if you're seeing 5400 broken links, its highly likely that your redesign created a configuration change that is causing those breaks. In these cases, it is often possible to fix all the broken links at once with just a few rewrite rules. (I'm betting you changed the permalink structure in the new design per Yoast's recommendations, but then didn't' redirect the old permalink structure.)
Can you give us some examples from the list of broken links and images?
Paul

Automated checking for broken links within content pieces
Hi, I am wondering if anyone can send me in the right direction on a system suggestion. We have currently grown out amount of content pieces on our website and our manual checking if the links in the content pieces are still 200 status is becoming extremely time consuming. Does anyone have a recommendation of a system that will crawl your pages and check both the internal and external links within the content for a status code (404,200,etc)? Preferably something server side so it can just run on a schedule but really anything would be fine. I have tried things like Screaming frog, etc and it just doesn't seem to be the right tool.

Duplicate Content aka 301 redirect from .com to .com/index.html
Moz reports are telling me that I have duplicate content on the home page because .com and .com/index.html are being seen as two pages. I have implemented 301 redirect using various codes I found online, but nothing seems to work. Currently I'm using this code. RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^jacksonvilleacservice.com
RewriteRule ^index.html$ http://www.jacksonvilleacservice.com/ [L,R=301] Nothing is changing. What am I doing wrong? I have given it several weeks but report stays the same. Also according to webmasters tools they can't see this as duplicate content. What am I doing wrong?0 -
Unable to see internal link numbers on Opensiteexplorer - Need help
I'm Anuj, a regular user of SEOMOZ. I need some SEO guidance from SEO experts. I'm trying to optimize a webstore for few keywords. I am facing some issues on SEO I was using https all over the webstore and was advised by the community members to not have https through out the site (Due to various reasons). The internal links were not showing up in opensiteexplorer & Google Webmaster Tools too when the site was with https (They were just showing 1 or 2). After changing the pages from https to http, I'm now able to see all the internal links of my website on GWT. Unfortunately, the internal link count on opensiteexplorer shows a very small fraction when compared to the # of internal links shown on GWT. The link update from Opensiteexplorer was on 27th FEB 2013. I had done the https to http (for all pages) somewhere between 17-24th of JANUARY 2013. I wanted to know if I have missed something as I am unable to see those numbers on Opensiteexplorer or will it take time for opensiteexplorer to show the internal link numbers ?

Excessive Internal Links & links to same location
Hi, When Google is counting internal links on a page and it comes across two links to the same url, do both of the links count towards Excessive Internal Links? The reason I ask is that on our website we allow users to navigate through the website in different ways (either by dropdown menus or side menu or through breadcrumbs); which cause some links to appear multiple times on the same page. Any thoughts? K.

Singular / Plural
Hi SEOmoz staff I'm doing on a French website that sells Wall Stickers. The main French keyword therefore is: stickers muraux (wall stickers) sticker mural (wall sticker) When you look at my homepage title; I've put the singular and plural in there. Do you think it hurts my website? Should I eliminate my least favorite one (= sticker mural)? Any other advice? Thank you! Jacob from Belgium X45qb.jpg
