Two domains, one unique design?
-
Hi Mozzers,
There are lots of articles on using multiple domains for a company and we all know the story behind that. I have a different question though - I designed and built a really great WordPress theme for my company and it runs on xyz.com and has run on their for well over a year and has decent authority. I would now like to expand my business and offer a different service and I'd like to market the new service on abc.com
My question is: If I use unique content on the second domain, but the same WordPress theme, will it have a negative SEO effect on either site?
I should mention: I have my reasons for not just using the same domain for both services.
I'd love to see what everyone thinks

Yes, but if the two sites are running off the same hosting environment, Google might get a little unhappy with that. But, all in all, I agree about the premise of hundreds of people using the same themes.
-
@Federico - I understand what you're saying and to a degree I agree, but for this case I want the two sides of the company to be very much visually linked. The services are different, however, they fall under the same umbrella. Think actual services (web, seo, etc.) and then consulting. Similar, but different. I'll take your thoughts into account though, I don't want to make a snappy decision. Cheers
-
If they are totally different services (that you need separate domains) I would go with different themes. Not because of a SEO penalty (there's none that I am aware of) but just because of user experience. Each Website offering a specific service would work better having the design matching the service, IMHO.

You can see many premium or free themes are using for different blog by many users.
Kindly do not make it as Twins, however there will be some minor difference in them !
-
Maybe on extreme cases where you have little content and a very high code to content ratio and 100% duplicated code (not PHP but actual 'source code') from another site it might be taken into account?
I don't know, but then I guess the design would be the least of the problems! If it helps, I can tell you from personal experience that I've used site structures that I've refined over time in different sites and I've seen very good results until now.
-
@Branagan That's exactly what I thought, but I'm fairly confident that I've read about duplicate design penalties over the years, so I just wanted to checkin and see what everyones opinion is. I did spend some time Googling for the answer and couldn't come across anything worthwhile. I'm starting to think that it won't have an effect, provided the content is unique and of high quality.
-
That shouldn't cause any problems whatsoever. It wouldn't make sense to penalize a site for having the same structure or design as another. Just think of how many millions are using the same CMS and/or the same template/theme!
Treat it as any other website!

Redirect typo domains
Hi, What's the "correct" way of redirecting typo domains? DNS A record goes to the same ip address as the correct domain name Then 301 redirects for each typo domain in the .htaccess Subdomains on typo urls still redirect to www or should they redirect to the subdomain on the correct url in case the subdomain exists?

Mutiple domains with similar SEO
ok we have one main domain about our company which is about renting luxury and exotic cars. (PrestigeLuxuryRentals.com). We own other domains with similar keywords, meta, etc on the URL and SEO For example, we own domains like exoticcarrentalorlando/exoticcarrentaltampa, with same background and design as main site but, we have different content than main site to avoid duplicate. Keep in mind, all the other domain we own, all have same template with our companies name on it but, it doesnt have any content or link that pertains to main site. is this a problem?

Should I get a unique IP?
I have a couple sites hosted in a VPS that share the same IP. Should I assign each site a unique IP? Would Google affect my rankings for a sudden IP change?

Changing Domain Name
Hi all, A client has just got their .edu domain and they want to change their current domain name (a .com) to this new .edu domain. The domain's CMS is Wordpress. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but basically I will need to create a new site (but they want to keep current design), move everything across to the new domain name, and 301 URL per URL? What about all the citations that the old URLs have gotten? The website is listed on Google listings/maps for some of their local keywords. Is there anyway to preserve this? Thank you all in advance.

Penalty on two primary keywords
Hi Seomoz, I have been strugling to get www.texaspoker.dk out of what seems to be a keyword specific penalty (we are on page 5 on "poker" and "online poker"). First I thought it was Penguin related, but I'm not so sure any longer. I have removed all the bad links to my site possible (it's not easy to get other people to remove links, I can tell you), and I have reported all the links that I would like google to "ignore" (reconsideration request) ... all in all I have requested for reconsideration 5 times, and - despite some small changes - I got the same answer every time. We violate the quality guide lines and we should be looking for unnatural links pointing to our site. If any one - by having a look at our site - have any idea what could be wrong, please don't hold back, we would love to hear your point of view. Right now we are in the middle of making our partners take off their site wide links to us (the partners you'll find if you click the flags to the right in the top of the home page). On Texaspoker.dk we only link to the partners from the home page, but maybe we should consider to take of even these links? No one is really clicking on them anyway. Another thing, which is only under consideration, is to ask our partners from Betxpert.com (with whom we have exchanged our news feed - you will find their feed if you schroll down the home page) to set the feed to "no follow" and do the same our selves. What do you think of this thought? As far as I can see, there is nothing wrong with the on page optimization, but maybe some one can see what I don't see? Again - what ever thoughts you guys may have - shoot ... i'm ready to take all bulets 🙂 Thanks in advance! Nicolai, Texaspoker.dk

Domain Forwarding and SEO
I have looked around and only saw older and contradicting responses to this question but what effect does having a domain with VALUABLE-KEYWORD.com forward to MAINSITE.com or COMMON-MISSPELLING.com forward to MAINSITE.com in terms of SEO and is it considered spammy or looked down upon

When should you turn off redirects to your new domain?
Our website moved to a new domain a year ago, and we have our original domain to redirect to our new domain. We're working on contacting people who still link to our old domain to ask them to update, but 7% of our traffic is still coming as a redirect from our old domain. My question is, when should we just shut the old domain down entirely and stop redirecting people to our new domain? Or should we just keep it up indefinitely? What would be the positive or negative impact on our new domain's SEO if we shut the old domain down? Thanks!
