Directories in the linkbuilding strategy

Hi all, what's your opinion about the impact of directories in the seo strategy? Are they efficient? Is it worth to pay attention to them? Could you give me some exemples of well-considered directories (apart from dmoz and yahoo)?

If you are focusing any of your strategy on local search there are worthwhile directories to look at using such as Yelp, foursquare, hotfrog, bing, google+, citysearch, superpage, YP, localize, info group. Regardless of the value that comes directly from these links, there are other more indirect but valuable results of being listed and getting reviews on the review directories.
SEOMoz getlisted.org is a great free tool for these.
Also, if there are any reputable niche or industry directories that relate to your business, those are worth investigating.

many thanks Oliver. Do you use any tool to manage the linkbuilding process? On the other hand, I've seen sites that have thousands of links. Taking into account that obtaining links via content generation implies much effort and time it makes me think that some of these links are "artificial" or something. I'm just starting with the the linkbuilding process from the scratch and believe me it is difficult! I'll watch the webminar you suggested.

From what I have read most directory sites, outside the likes of Yahoo, are actually link farms in disguise. Google is targeting these websites and you will receive no benefit from the transfer of link juice. You are far better off spending time creating strong links with relevant sites and share-able content that will provide great information for your visitors.

Link from a directory
Hi, im submitting a clients website to some directories. They are a dental practice and I'm adding them to this website http://goo.gl/Tvyabd Once i added the business to its directory it asked me to add a link (in so many words) back to its website from my clients website. Is this ok to do or is it seen as spam? Im confused about this as sometimes directories are free and sometimes they ask for a fee for it to be fast tracked to put it on the website. I always check the Domain authority of the websites and make sure they are relevant to the industry that I'm working in but again not sure if this would be seen as "paying" for links. Thanks Ade

Paying to be listed on link directories... a little help?
So, I was perusing SEOMoz's suggested link directory list and noticed some sites there require paid links. I have a couple questions regarding this: Is paying for directory listings a good idea? I'm not crazy enough to buy a bunch of links; I want to create a sustainable SEO strategy. But I do know that most everyone does at least a little paid linking. Is there a budget or percentage of ones total links you would recommend for this? Is it REALLY ok to do this at all? Also, assuming I have about $200-$500/month I could spend purchasing links, what sites are best to get links for first? Just a bit of background: we're starting a content marketing strategy for our business and are spending about $2,000 per month "buying" content (design, data, writing, etc.) so purchasing links is definitely NOT our strategy and never will be. Average time to see results after linkbuilding?
Hello everyone, I did some linkbuilding in the last few weeks, most of these links are already indexed by Google when i check their Google-cache. But i don't see any improvements in my own positions, despite my backlinks are really good. I'm now wondering, how long does it normally take to see position improvements after your linkbuilding? (Further the on page SEO is good and i'm regulary updating my website) Regards, Yannick

Other than the homepage, what other pages need linkbuilding TLC?
With my linkbuilding efforts, I know what keywords I want to target but my homepage ranks for most of my keywords. The other pages were written and built for specific keywords, but do they need linkbuilding TLC? They don't rank in the SERPs much anyway (if not at all) and the homepage is by-far the strongest in the SERPs.
