301 Redirect htaccess
-
Hi Guys,
I have a website that has plenty of links with parameters. For example:
http://www.domainname.co.uk/index.php?app=ecom&ns=catshow&ref=Brandname-Golf-Shorts&sid=201v04gxs2hlozv161tfo43qk98583elI want to place a wildcard redirect on the .htaccess but don't know what exactly code for this. Ideally I want the URLs above to be:
http://www.domainname.co.uk/Category/Brandname-Golf-Shorts
Any help pls.
Thanks,
Brucz -

No worries, yes anything pre 8am is a risk (coffee depending)!

Hey Mark,
I should not answer questions in around 6 a.m. Sorry for that
My example works only when you want to redirect from an old domain to a new one - or from http://www.domain.com to http://domain.com
If you want the links to be on the same domain, things get tricky quite fast. I'll deep dive into the documentation and be right back

Hey Christoph,
Glad our needs can spring you into action
Appreciate that very much, will test it out in the morning and post my findings.
Thanks again, thats great.

Hey Mark,
Finally a question that I can answer (yay!)
I use the following code on my website:
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.it-engelhardt.de/$1 [R=301]</ifmodule>It basically takes every URL like http://itengelhardt.de/microconf-2013-hub-page/
and just redirects it (301 of course!) to http://www.it-engelhardt.de/microconf-2013-hub-page/
UPDATE 1: (after carefully re-reading the question)
OK, hopefully this is the correct answer to your question:
**Assumptions I made: **
- You want to extract the category name from the query string (i.e. everything after the '?')
- "ns=catshow" in the query string stands for "category show" and tells the server to show a category
Then this is hopefully what you want:
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ns=catshow
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ref=([^&]+)
RewriteRule ^index.php /Category/%1? [R=301]**What it does: **
- checks if "ns=catshow" is present in the query string
- extracts the value from the "ref=" variable in the query string and stores it in %1
- rewrites every request to the server, that matches conditions 1. and 2. and starts with "index.php" to /Category/%1
4. the "?" at the end of "/Category/%1?" tells the server to throw away the original query string - this might not be desirable, if not: remove the '?'
5. the [R=301] tells the server to redirect using HTTP 301Tested with: http://htaccess.madewithlove.be/

How to handle potentially thousands (50k+) of 301 redirects following a major site replacement

a major site replacement and I mean total replacement. Things you should know
Existing domain has 17 years history with Google but rankings have suffered over the past year and yes we know why. (and the bitch is we paid a good sized SEO company for that ineffective and destructive work)
The URL structure of the new site is completely different and SEO friendly URL's rule. This means that there will be many thousands of historical URL's (mainly dynamic ones) that will attract 404 errors as they will not exist anymore. Most are product profile pages and the God Google has indexed them all. There are also many links to them out there.
The new site is fully SEO optimised and is passing all tests so far - however there is a way to go yet. So here are my thoughts on the possible ways of meeting our need,
1: Create 301 redirects for each an every page in the .htaccess file that would be one huge .htaccess file 50,000 lines plus - I am worried about effect on site speed.
2: Create 301 redirects for each and every unused folder, and wildcard the file names, this would be a single redirect for each file in each folder to a single redirect page
so the 404 issue is overcome but the user doesn't open the precise page they are after.
3: Write some code to create a hard copy 301 index.php file for each and every folder that is to be replaced.
4: Write code to create a hard copy 301 .php file for each and every page that is to be replaced.
5: We could just let the pages all die and list them with Google to advise of their death.
6: We could have the redirect managed by a database rather than .htaccess or single redirect files. Probably the most challenging thing will be to load the data in the first place, but I assume this could be done programatically - especially if the new URL can be inferred from the old. Many be I am missing another, simpler approach - please discuss0 -

Penalty after 301 redirect?
We run a training center. We had 1 main website and 2 dedicated websites to certain themes. The 2 dedicated websites are older and the main website is about 6 months old. The 2 dedicated websites had a top 5 ranking for their most important keywords. 2 weeks ago we imported all the content from the dedicated websites into the main website. Then immediately after we did a perfect 301 redirect of these websites to the main website. 2 SEO companies checked it for us and so I'm very sure this is done right. Google immediately caught this up and gave the main website a boost. We where in the top 10 for many important keywords for 1 week. The next week all our rankings dropped. We only have a top 50 ranking for 10 keywords. Before it was 75 keywords in the top 20. Do you know what could have caused this? Any suggestion, thought, ... is welcome!

301 redirect recommendations
One of our clients we are working on have two sites the main with a PR5 and a separate one with a PR4. We are planning on doing a 301 from the PR4 to a page on the PR5 Is it best to do: www.PR4.com ----> www.PR5.com/releveantPR4page or www.PR4.com/page ----> www.PR5.com/releveantPR4page Most pages on the PR4 site can fit into one PR5 page logically. However the PR4 has an about us, contact us, blog/with posts, FAQ, Applications, Legal Resources which are all pretty out dated.. The PR4 site is kinda messy and we are not sure if it will be easy to 301 each page individually with the user in mind. can we do a sitewide 301 redirect from the root PR4.com to a page PR/5.com/releveantPR4page and also do deeper 301's? PR4.com/PR4page ---> PR5.com/releveantPR4page

.htaccess newby
Sorry to ask a really dumb question. I want to sort out a load of old 404 errors. I've exported the list of URL and I'm more than happy to go through that and work out what needs to go where. After that my only option at the moment is to use the re-direct function in my WordPress install and do all the work manually. There are loads to do so I want to be able to upload all the re-directs. I know I need to create a htaccess file and upload it. I know where to upload it. This is where I get nervous. I need to get this file right. Is there a really obvious idiots file which I can use and then save as the correct file type? I've got all the URLs in a CSV at the moment. Sorry for being a bit thick. Hope you can help.

Changing a parent category and 301 redirecting
I have a set of three pages that are subpages of a parent. The structure is as follows: mysite.com/directory/personal-widgets mysite.com/directory/commercial-widgets mysite.com/directory/widgets-services The partent page name "directory" really isn't working for where I want these pages to evolve. So I want to change it to "guides" In a world without worrying about google, I would simply change the parent page to guides, so they look like this, and be done with it: mysite.com/guides/personal-widgets But, the obvious problem is that I have external links to the page now. And the pages have a nice PR. And they also have Facebook page Likes and I don't know if I'll lose those. I know that if I should do this I should redirect the pages to the new pages of course. My question is: Will redirecting the old URL to the new URL with a 301 cause anything negative to happen that I might not be expecting? Does Google dislike Redirects for any reason, or understand they are sometimes necessary?
