Sudden Page Rank Drop for Weight Loss Camp
-
My site BalanceME.com has been performing really well and continually climbs more and more but in the last 7 days we have had a drop this last week. We went from #2 for weight loss camp to #6, and even further on other terms.
It is mid May and I cannot find any other explanation for the sudden drop. I am hoping someone could give me some sort if idea what could possibly be the answer. Recently we have had two press releases go out, target for keywords, and also installed images that navigate to new pages on the site. There have been few additions to the site, and nothing can explain the drop.
Other companies in our group have not had issues with recent drops, and we use the same practices with the other organizations.
Thank you for your time

We have bridge sites targeted to create content and give us good anchor text and backlinks to our site. In the past week or two we have had a serious drop in national rankings for some of the terms. It turns out the bridge sites were hacked:
weight-loss-camp-california.com
weight-loss-camp-massachusetts.com
They are still broken right now, but one of our developers is on it. This could have lead to the rankings drop. We are a white hat organization, so it was interesting to see a drop even if there was an algorithm change.
We check rankings in two ways, locally, and nationally. Locally we saw a SMALL drop in some targeted markets, but nationally we dropped from #2 to #5 almost over night. I do not understand why this happened... It has happened in the past, and we just waited it out and we actually returned to a better-than-before position.
-
What do you mean by bridge sites? Have you cleaned up this hack? If you can give us a few more details, we can help you figure out if this may be contributing to your problem.
-
Still dropping, found out bridge sites were hacked... any other ideas?
-
Changed it. The SEO footer text we use put us over in density, but scribe still had us on track.
As I said in the comment below, there was a hiccup in results in the spring that eventually corrected itself.
-
We have not lost position with the brand name, and the anchor text for most of the backlinks matches the keyword phrase we are aiming for.
I really wonder if this is a hiccup in the SERP, we had a hiccup in the spring and eventually it went back to normal, actually better than normal...
-
I didn’t witness any on-page problem in a quick audit but i guess your linking strategy have a problem the links that are pointing back to your website are mostly with a keyword anchor text... I would highly recommend you to build more links with the anchor text that says your brand name.

I haven't had time to look at your site thoroughly but I ran a quick report through our system and something did stick out a bit.
When you compare your site to the other 9 sites (in the top 10) of Google, the average number of times "weight loss camp" is on the page is 0-5 and on your site, it's showing up 9 separate times.
I would either reduce some of that exact anchor text and/or add more text to your homepage to dilute it a bit more. A combination of both is probably best.
If I have some time later, I can take a better look but that's definitely one thing you could address and optimize right now.

Lost Wikipedia page and dropped heavily in rankings. How many of you aware of and experienced this?
Hi all, We lost of our Wikipedia page for 2nd time and we dropped in rankings 2nd time too. I got confused first time whether Wikipedia was the actual reason as we had couple of major changes in our website. But recently it's been clear that losing Wikipedia page is the culprit as we have no website changes around these days. How many of you aware of this and experienced this? Please share your views. Hope this info will help you. Thanks

Is user engagement a ranking signal?
Read something about user engagement might be a signal that Google uses, along with links and on-site optimisation, to decide if a search result goes up or down. What should I believe and what are the developments in this field?

With no changes to my site, I suddenly experienced a huge drop in search queries on Aug1. Your company has still given me an overall rating of A. I just thought you may be able to help or be interested in my case due to it's strange nature. Due to some suggestions on the webmaster forums, I have disavowed all low quality back links to the site, and I am currently working through each page trying to make the key words a little less spammy. Here are some screen shots of the action...
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-WgXUf-lvUyg/U-nrWNgspPI/AAAAAAAAAEI/imoI190LUns/s1600/Analytics_081214.tiff
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-srmvn288rr0/U-pxlwoycVI/AAAAAAAAAEg/ckmyX_2Sl_Y/s1600/PAGES_AUG.tiff
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DVCYxhkutbQ/U-pxpQVfYfI/AAAAAAAAAEo/MN9PiLFT-zs/s1600/pages_july.tiff This appears to be almost a 50% 2 year set back. Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated0 -
Correct usage of expired pages -410 or not?
Hi Mozzes, We're running a property portal that carries around 200.000 listings in two languages. All listings are updated several times per day and when one of our ads expire we report this via the "410 Gone", and place a link to our users: This ad has expired, click here to search for similar properties. Looking at our competition I seems that here are many different ways to deal with this, one popular being a 301 to the corresponding search result. We've tried to get directions from Google on what method they prefere, but as usual dead silence. Advices are mostly welcome.

How could Penguin kill my top ten rank and promote this garbage page to a #5 spot
Hey, Before penguin, I had a #9 rank for the term "yoga poses". So as many of us are doing, I started looking at my link profile... and yes, there were around 300 links from an old yoga news website (anchor: yoga poses)... that lead to the page on my site optimized for this term. The problem is they took the site down, but not properly... I.E. they generate a "not available" message for browsers, but underneath, I guess the bots can still index all the pages... so I guess they were interpreting these links as coming from a cloaked site. So, I was able to get them to remove the links... webmaster tools reports half of them gone now. What I don't get though... is how Google can give this garbage page a #5 spot for a competitive term like "yoga poses"... Check out http://www.ebmyoga.com/beginyoga.html and compare it to my page... http://www.yogaclassplan.com/yoga-poses/ This page leads to highly quality 100% unique yoga pose articles... in my mind we deliver so much more value than the site with a #5 rank. I don't understand. Any insight? Thanks,

SERP and SEO Moz ranking
Until a couple of months ago the predicted SEO Moz ranking for a specific keyword was fairly close to what I actually experienced with my website. However, since then the correlation has not been good. For example, according to SEO Moz I am ranked #1 for a specific keyword with google.ca and google.com yet my site actually shows up consistently at #3 for that keyword. Has anyone else noticed this divergence?

Does the browers type affect rankings?
This may be a rooky question so apologies in advance if it is! A client of mine has asked why his site's rank is different when he searches for it from his iPhone or computer (where he uses IE) and also on Bing. Obviously I know that there will be differences between Bing and Google so I can explain that to him. But he seems to be implying that the different browsers are affecting the results on his iPhone and computer. I've tried this myself using Firefox and IE and on Firefox the site ranks page 1 but on IE it ranks page 3 (both using Google). Is this likely to do with the browser having information about my past search habits or is it actually the browser affecting the SERP? Again, sorry if this is a stupid question! Thanks in advance.
