Rankings and search traffic fell off a cliff

Hi Moz community,
One of my clients has a beast of a website built in ASP.NET (which causes me problems cos I don't have much experience in that)
It is a job-site that aggregates job opportunities from other job-sites and provides a job matching service by email etc.
They used to have great presence on Google naturally for thousands of job searches.
Since Penguin and Penguin 2.0 (I think) their traffic has fallen off a cliff.
I have been doing some "off-page" experimentation, seeing if we can fix a lot of issues by re-sculpting their backlink profile (seeing as it was after penguin). but what I have found is that some pages respond to this off page work but some just do not at all, despite how we approach it, such as disavowing previous links building fresh new top quality content links with natural anchor text etc....
Which has lead me to the conclusion that the wider issue is on-page and potentially site structure. Unfortunately as it is ASP.NET I am not so comfortable diagnosing the issues.
I think also some issues will be related to dupe content etc.... but I would LOVE to get some input from my learned Moz colleagues.
The website is http://www.allthetopbananas.com/ - any tips on how to recover from this dramatic loss of traffic would be massively appreciated.

Hey Mark, given the Panda correlation I would look at content issues first and see what we can dig up there.
So, the 60 second SEO audit:
1. I grabbed a chunk of content from one page:
"Female PE Teacher, Permanent - Bath - Pay to Scale Full time role paid to scale depending on relevant teaching experience Required for September 2013 Full time as in accordance with the Teachers"
Run that through Google and what do we see.....
Lots of listings for that exact piece of content - approx 40 reported. But, we hit the third page and we see:
In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 21 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.No sign of your clients site though!
So, we open it up and look at the omitted results and there are now over a hundred results and your clients site is in something like 95th position.
Conclusions?
The client site is basically a conduit to other sites like totaljobs.co.uk and re-purposes content available in several other locations. Therefore, they are being filtered as they are not the originator of the content and they bring nothing new to the table.
Pros & Cons
Pro - It's content so can be sorted easily enough by creating unique content.
Con - there seems to be a lot of it
Your client needs to do a content audit and create descriptions of the jobs that add some value and uniqueness. Given how many other folks there are pumping out these same descriptions there is likely some opportunity there but the old model is broken and they have to bring some value.
Caveat - this was the quickest of quick looks but certainly, it seems there are no real mysteries here so just dig in and do some deeper analysis. I imagine the site might give copyscape.com a heart attack!

Many thanks for your response. I have found the tools you recommended (Barracuda Panguin Tool and Link detox) extremely useful.
I have attached the barracuda results for allthetopbananas.com. It looks like Panda is the culprit.
Their link profile returned a result of "Low Risk" in Link Detox as expected, so I don't think Penguin is an issue.
If you have any further suggestions or direction from here, I would be most grateful. I am thinking that sites like this one, that have relied on basic on-page keyword optimisation and backlinks to attain their Google rankings in the past are now suffering because since Panda Google is putting more value on a wider set of signals such as social, authority, freshness, authorRank, mentions etc.. Would you concur with that?

Penguin can and often does have page specific problems. In fact, most often it seems the homepages of many sites are most affected and seemingly Penguin 2.0 does a better job of targeting inner pages.
I have worked with several companies who are still struggling to rank their homepage after Penguin yet can generate traffic to their inner pages.
Firstly, I would not jump to assume there are lots of problems with the site, perform an audit if you are unsure but don't make this as an assumption. Use known penalty dates to review traffic and anoint the analytics so you can get a clear picture of which updates caused the traffic drops for a quick and easy way to get more intel.
More often than not I am now advising people to just start over on a new domain and redirecting the old (not with a 301) to the new. This is painful, and many folks are holding onto domains but if clean up is not working and is not practical to continue down this route then a clean domain gives you a fresh start.
I have just had a quick look at the backlink profile in OSE and it does not look like your standard penguinised site though. Are you sure about the cause of the loss of traffic? Do the drops coincide with known penguin dates?
Really, the analytics should be your first port of call here and tools like this will help you easily map algorithm change dates to traffic changes: http://www.barracuda-digital.co.uk/panguin-tool/
Then, investigate further from there on in. If links do seem to be an issue link detox is a quick and easy way to get a good grasp on what kind of links your client has.
Ultimately, it needs investigation but start with analytics, form your hypothesis and try to prove it and then feed back here.

Rank Loss Analysis Tool
I did a detailed analysis of the loss in rankings for about 100 pages on my site over the last 6 months. For few pages the SEO clicks have dropped by 40%. Tags and Categories Ranking
Hello A few times I have come across tags and categories ranking for some relevant search terms. This seems strange as all category and tag pages would have 0 external links back to them - whereas pretty much every other page on the site would have external links. In most cases thy seem to rank along with the page, for example: for the search term "voiceover recording xxxxx" The voice over recording page will rank, followed by a similar tag page... If I make the tag links 'nofollow' would that help stop this? Cheers

Ranking strangeness
Just wondering if anyone had come across this kind of scenario which I had/have with a client. Rebuilt/revamped site that has got problems with thin content we are looking to resolve. Rankings for the main keywords were ok on page 2 or 3 and being worked on. Two weeks ago ALL main keywords disappeared from ranking (category pages). The homepage took over and ranked ALL those keywords at #1! Bang -straight to top spot. However happy I was I find this disconcerting as there is a reasonable level of competition. Today homepage rankings in the main go and directories come back into the rankings at some good positions on page one. We still need to fix thin and duplicated content! I can justify the problems and swing with the category pages but the massive cross the board top position for the homepage has been pretty bizarre. Has anyone else had the experience where the homepage suddenly 'out-performs' in a big way?

2 pages ranking for the same term
Hi everyone, I have had two pages ranking on page two of Google for a while now for the same term. I have tried dedicating a page to it but as the other has a url with the search term in Google is ranking both it seems. How can I without deindexing one of the pages help better tell Google which one to rank? I imagine if it only ranked one page I would get a higher result rather than 2 weaker ones? On-site has been done and so has links to the homepage, but the innerpage still ranks also as it has the search term in its url. Would a canonical tag be worth it here? the page is however getting some traffic itself for other terms so I am reluctant to do that. Any help much appreciated.

Site re-design, full site domain A/B test, will we drop in rankings while leaking traffic
We are re-launching a client site that does very well in Google. The new site is on a www2 domain which we are going to send a controlled amount of traffic to, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% to 100% over a 5 week period. This will lead to a reduction in traffic to the original domain. As I don't want to launch a competing domain the www2 site will not be indexed until 100% is reached. If Google sees the traffic numbers reducing over this period will we drop? This is the only part I am unsure of as the urls and site structure are the same apart from some new lower level pages which we will introduce in a controlled manner later? Any thoughts or experience of this type of re-launch would be much appreciated. Thanks Pete

Organic search traffic dropped 40% - what am I missing?
Have a client (ecommerce site with 1,000+ pages) who recently switched to OpenCart from another cart. Their organic search traffic (from Google, Yahoo, and Bing) dropped roughly 40%. Unfortunately, we weren't involved with the site before, so we can only rely on the wayback machine to compare previous to present. I've checked all the common causes of traffic drops and so far I mostly know what's probably not causing the issue. Any suggestions? Some URLs are the same and the rest 301 redirect (note that many of the pages were 404 until a couple weeks after the switch when the client implemented more 301 redirects) They've got an XML sitemap and are well-indexed. The traffic drops hit pretty much across the site, they are not specific to a few pages. The traffic drops are not specific to any one country or language. Traffic drops hit mobile, tablet, and desktop I've done a full site crawl, only 1 404 page and no other significant issues. Site crawl didn't find any pages blocked by nofollow, no index, robots.txt Canonical URLs are good Site has about 20K pages indexed They have some bad backlinks, but I don't think it's backlink-related because Google, Yahoo, and Bing have all dropped. I'm comparing on-page optimization for select pages before and after, and not finding a lot of differences. It does appear that they implemented Schema.org when they launched the new site. Page load speed is good I feel there must be a pretty basic issue here for Google, Yahoo, and Bing to all drop off, but so far I haven't found it. What am I missing?

Impressions Fell off a Cliff, No Manual Action, What Gives?
Hi Moz crew, We've got a bit of a riddle on our hands here at Flightpath. You see, we're an agency that specializes in digital services like web design, social media and SEO. Unfortunately, we seem to have been hit by an a algorithmic penalty on February 28th, 2014. This is a first for us - we've never had to deal with a penalty (manual or algorithmic) for our site or any of our client sites. Here's the situation: We were averaging around 1,500 impressions per day before the drop. Since 2/28, we see closer to 250 impressions per day. No manual action notice in WMT Branded keywords did not lose rank. It was primarily our the service-oriented keywords that we lost rank on (ex: "digital agency", "digital agency nyc", "social media agency nyc", "web agency new york" - we were page 1 for all of these, though "digital agency" wasn't as secure as the others). Backlink profile looks ok. We did a clean-up (disavowed a few hundred domains) as soon as we noticed the drop, but there wasn't anything in there egregiously offensive. There definitely wasn't anything NEW that was problematic. Not a lot of non-branded anchor text at all. No major changes to the site in 2014 Any ideas? That makes sense though, we were pretty ruthless in disavowing domains and almost surely caught a few "positive" links along with the bad ones. Aside from that, it appeared to be a full recovery - every single one of our generic keywords was back for just over 48 hours. Any ideas? Was Google rolling out a new algorithm tweak, only to pull it back due to bugs? Or was it the opposite: Google rolling back the update that hurt our site to fix a few bugs before pushing it live again?

Why Keyword Ranking Fluctuate?
Hi All, I have a shoes website and I am working on it from last four months. I am targeting four main keywords but I have some issues with ranking. First one is that keywords ranking fluctuate many time a day but they remain on the same page.
