Member's Badge as Link Building to Homepage or Internal Pages?
-
Providing members and embeddable badge is a well known link building tactic. Is it better to have the badges from hundreds or even thousands of members link back to the homepage of a website, or a lot of different inner pages?
The inner pages would the their individual's profile which sits under a category (such as a service and organisation by location).
Member's websites would be related to the content of the website generally.
What are the advantages of each?
1. Links to homepage make it easier to rank for competitive keywords on the homepage?
If the types of websites were to vary a lot, say a carpet cleaning website and a web designer website, if they all linked to the homepage, would it cause some confusion for the link profile?

Thanks for the response.
The badge would be a graphic with ALT text.
Member's would post this badge on their own website as a way of showing they are a member (a bit like the old seomoz badge), so the websites will be varying degrees of quality.
I imagine there would be similar ALT text penalties as there are anchor text penalties if there are too many focused on commercial keyword.
So perhaps it's best if the images point to the member's profile page with their own brand name in the ALT text along with some target keywords. E.g. "Brand Name Carpenter in Location".

Great question...
This question has been questioned by many SEO experts themselves for a long time. Some SEO firms like beanstalk or other very reputable older firms have footer links still from every client they have ever worked for. Many of these firms are ranking on the first page for terms like SEO services which is a very competitive term. Hence, they don't all have relevant links to their site.
I think what you mainly have to worry about is where is your link being placed. Is it a low quality website? If you woke up one morning and 1000 people posted your link on 1000 domains with DA's that were 9 and they had no intentions of trying to raise their website ever, you would most likely be in some trouble.
It also all depends on what types of links these will be. You talked about a badge then anchor text, which will this be? Will you be placing anchor text on a page, or will it be some type of image? I am a bit confused about this part..
There are many variables that we would have to know to correctly answer this question. What type of service will you be offering? Would adult sites be able to post this link on their page? Casino sites, etc.. Who would want to post this?
To answer your question about home page or inner page, this would be both. You want your DA to increase for your full site and if you just build to 1 page, it will increase your PA a lot, but wouldn't help your DA much.
Have a great night, I hope this helped some.

Would there be any benefit to creating multiple pages of the same content to target different titles?
Obviously, the duplicated pages would be canonical, but would there be a way of anchoring a page land by search term entry? For example: If you have a site that sells cars you could use this method but have a page that has (brand) cars for sale, finance options, best car for a family, how far will the (brand) car go for on a full tank and so on? Then making all the information blocks h2's but using the same H2s for the duplicated page titles. Then it gets complicated, If someone searches "best car for a family" and the page title for the duplicated page is clicked how would you anchor this user to the section of the page with this information? Could there be a benefit to doing this or would it just not work?

How to take down a sub domain which is receiving many spammy back-links?
Hi all, We have a sub domain which has less engagement for last few years. Eventually many spammy back links pointed to this sub domain. There are relevant back links too. We have deleted most of the pages which are employing spammy content or which have spammy back links. Still I'm confused whether to take this sub domain down or keep it. The confusion between "relevant backlinks might be helping our website" and "spammy backlinks are affecting to drop in rankings"? Thanks

Help Me Change My Client's Mind
My client wants to build a second site to provide targeted links for SEO to his main site. He's interested in buying a TLD with some near topic authority/links and then build the second site's authority up from there. He is clear that this could get him in trouble for a link scheme, but thinks it can all be hidden from Google. Off the top of my head I was able to recall a few of the pain-in-the-neck things you'd have to do to not get caught, but he seemed unconvinced. I recall you'd have to have: Different registrar Different contact/WhoIs Different site host Different G/A, GWT Logging into second's site's G/A, GWT with different IP address not used for main domain With the exception of the last one, he didn't seem to think it would be too hard. Aren't there more difficult maneuvers required for hiding this from Google? I want to be able to point out to him how ridiculous this low integrity effort will be, without losing the client. Thanks! Best... Darcy

Background: Contacted as many domain administrators as we could. Not a big change. Some want $$$ Submitted 3 disavow lists (3 months apart from each other). Last list was to remove all links. We still have a large number of Japanese and Chines links directories pointing to us that we cannot contact or don't know how to ask to be removal. One key thing to keep in mind, is that we don't want to change the URL. Thanks, for the help.

Are Google site links only ever shown on the top website? Or is it possible for certain queries for the site in position #2 or #3 or something to have site links but the #1 position not have them? If there are any guides, tips or write ups regarding site links and their behavior and optimization please share! Thanks.

Absolute Internal Links and their Affect on Rankings for Local Businesses
For many localized search terms (City + Profession), I'm noticing that OpenSiteExplorer is reporting high numbers of backlinks for anchortext from Absolute internal links from that same domain. Now, I'm familiar with the difference in relative and absolute internal links but am wondering if this type of linking may be carrying a lot of weight for rankings. It may be a correlation over causation situation if it's more that those companies that are including absolute internal links for terminology are just doing a better job (generally) with internal linking... but I feel like this may be something worth digging into. Everything I have read says that search engines view absolute and relative internal links essentially equally but does anybody have their own insight on the effectiveness for these two types of internal links in regards to small local businesses who otherwise are getting basically no links at all?

Outsourcing of guest blog articles and usefulness of links from guest blogging
I'm not the greatest writer but want to do some guest blogging for links and traffic. Are there any businesses out there that write world class guest blog articles for subjects that match my business? Also, i've read that doing this for links is really moot because the blog posts get archived and become pagerank "unranked" thereby offering little link value after about a month or so. Once they get archived do they still get counted by google and does the anchor text and page rank still count? Thanks in advance mozzers! Ron
