Huge Drop in Rankings
-
I just (this week) experienced a huge drop in rankings for one of the keywords that I was sitting in second spot on Google US. 'What Should I Read Next' I dropped to 82, but none of my other keywords suffered a similar drop. Any ideas?
Webmasters offers no clues as of yet either. I was doing link building through blogs and some article sites, but it was all white hat as far as I know.

Not doing that, thanks though.

Thanks Oleg,
So if I build more links to the page with different anchor text and more links to the homepage it should fix the problem? Or is it more of a long-term penalty from Google?
-
And as an aside, the links in Q&A are nofollow, so it's not a place to use to build or diversify your anchor text to your site.
-
My guess is Penguin - specifically because it 1) a single page that was effected and 2) the anchor profile for that page. You built a lot of links to that specific page with the same anchor text. In fact, you have more links to that page/anchor text than branded to your homepage. I would build more links to your homepage with your brand/URL as well as more diversified links to your /what-should-i-read-next/ page.
Cheers,
Oleg

Backlinks from subdomain, can it hurt ranking?
I just started doing an SEO audit and noticed I have 40,000 some odd back links from an OLD version of our site that has been moved to a subdomain. The back links are for articles that already exist on our main site. I don't think Google is picking it up as duplicate content because that site isn't being crawled anymore. Could this hurt us SEO wise? I plan on removing the site, but how long after it's been removed should those back links disappear?

Has anyone seen a recent drop in Page Authority?
We have seen a sizeable drop in Page Authority for three of our key category pages over the last one week. The total number of linking root domains has increased for all the three pages. We have disavowed a few spammy links but we doubt that would cause a drop in page authority. The domain authority is unchanged. Is there any way we could figure out the cause of the drop? Has anyone else also noticed a drop in page authority for their pages? Puzzled by high ranking page (#2 in SERPs) with zero/low page or domain authority
So, I get the smoothie that is page authority and domain authority and the link metrics that Moz uses to predict how well a page will rank for a certain keyword. I can look at a specific search term where we are on say, page 2 or 3, with a page authority of 1 and domain authority of 26, I get why competitors rank above us. But then I look at a keyword that is much more competitive, where we rank #2, which is awesome, where the landing page is also showing a page authority of 1, and domain authority of 26. How can we rank higher than competitors with a page authority of 56 and domain authority of 65? Their onpage optimization for the keyword is no worse, and sometimes better that ours but we maintain this ranking. By the way the competition also have hundreds if not thousands more linking root domains than our page. Any ideas why one keyword is a rockstar and one is a dud, with the same poor PA and DA?

Website is Dropping in PR
Hey there. I'm new here at our company, and I'm working on SEO for a website we are working on (www.greenthumbdepot.com). We are doing some link-building (forums, articles, blogs, directory submissions, etc) and are currently trying to find some good quality links, as well. After 3 months, the site was on page 15 for the search term "hydroponics nutrients" on Google, and on the first pages of organic search for Bing and Yahoo!. However, looking again, our website has disappeared from the first 50 pages of Google (according to SEOMOZ). From what I can see, the incoming links are not spammy, and the articles we have been submitting have been driving a small amount of traffic to the site. Are we doing something incredibly wrong here? We've changed the meta tags a couple of nights ago. I'm a noob here, so please go easy on me! I'm learning... so thanks for any advice you can give. -jen

Site size affecting page rank?
I've noticed the sites that rank above me for certain phrases are much larger than I am. Here are the results of the 'site:' command for the top 6 results for a phrase I want to rank for (yes, I know that 'site' is not exact): 32,600 pages 8,760,000 pages (wikipedia) 684 pages 148 pages (domain name equal to search phrase) 1400 pages 120 pages (my site) Now, I appreciate that larger sites have more stuff to link to, and therefore have more juice flowing to them from external links. BUT, is it also true that they are generating lots of internal juice by having so many pages? I've looked at the PageRank algorithm and understand that the max page rank for a site (with no external links) is based on the number of pages of that site and how well linked they are). My question is: based on all the experts here, is number of pages in the site an important factor (assuming good on-page SEO), or does it really come down to number of external links (from relevant sites with appropriate anchor text, of course)? Can a small site with tons of external links rank above much larger sites? Has anyone beaten Wikipedia for a phrase they were targeting? How did you do it? Thanks!
