All pages were returning 404 for an hour. Will it impact the SERPS?
-
Hi,
Due to a bug in my website system, all the pages were returning an 404 default page for a period of 1 hour. Can this event impact the SERPs of this site? (the site is heavily visited, more than 500k users coming from google every day, so I assume google crawls my pages every moment)
-
If it was just an hour I don't think you have anything to worry about. In the future you may want to look into serving a 500 code instead when the site goes down.

Hi,
The GWT crawl errors section is now showling lots of my pages that were affected with the 404 error code. But these pages (most of them) are still in the serps. It seems their position were not affected.

Beyond the crawl... if a user is searching via key term to your site and the user gets a an error, that can certainly have an impact. You mentioned 500K Google search users could be impacted, so I would not be surprised if you don't notice a bounce. Moving forward, you may want to consider a Content Distribution Network service. If your main site goes down, the cached site can still be accessed by users. With the amount of traffic you mentioned, you'll need to do some research on this, but it may be a way to mitigate this risk in the future. Best of luck.

Dear Lucas,
it all depends on the fact if Google/Bing visited/crawled your website in that specific hour. If your website is receiving 500K visitors each day from Google and your websites spits out 404 pages for just an hour I don't think it will impact the rankings at all.
A client website of mine receives about 20K visitors each day, same sort of problem, due to a mistake he made his homepage was shut down for 2 days, Google bot had visited 2 times but the rankings were the same and webmaster central even gave us a notice of the problem.
I think you should be just fine.
What if the website of microsoft went offline due to a server error, electric pulse or something like that, i don't think that will impact their rankings at all.
just my 2 cents on the matter
Regards
Jarno

Returning customers segmentation
I am working on some reporting to determine the percentages of my customers return and purchase again. I was going to use segments to break it out using ecommerce transactions in the conditions, 1 purchase, 2 purchases, etc. But my question is, after selecting a date range, would that only show those figures for that particular date? For example, if a person made a purchase in Oct, and another in Nov and another in Dec, which showing only December, would it show that individual as 1 purchase or 3? Whats the best way to segment that out? I want to basically see how our repeat business is doing compared to new customers during specific periods of time.

Long list or paginated pages
Hi peeps, I am just interested in this from a usability POV and to see what you would prefer to see when you are met with a page that has multiple options. Lets say that the page looks like a list of services, each clearly marked out in its own segment, but there are 50-60 options that match your requirements. Do you like to keep scrolling, or would you prefer to take what is there and then move on if you feel you want to dig deeper? Would you like to see a long list, of have the options loaded in as you get to them? -Andy

SERP with no "www"
I have noticed that Google SERP without login is showing the domains without " www " - all of them. Have you seen this too? What does it mean for us?

When auditing a website, when do you decide to delete pages?
Given that the Panda algorithm includes engagement and user experience, when would you consider deleting a page that has poor engagement and conversion metrics? For example, consider a page that ranks well organically and receives (relatively) decent traffic from search. However, this page has poor engagement metrics compared to other pages on the site, does not convert visitors as well as other pages on the site, and doesn't have any external links. Would you consider deleting this page? Which metrics do you use when auditing a site and considering a web page from removal (bounce rate, average time on site, pages per visit, linking root domains, visits, revenue per visit, etc.)? Are some metrics weighed more than others? What kind of thresholds do you use? Finally, is there a situation when you would choose NOT to delete pages, even considering the above?

Home page (s) deindexed
Ok odd one. 2 sites hosted on go daddy, neither sites has any cause for concern. But both sites have had there home pages deindexed or - 10000 penalty for no reason. We do the SEO for 1 site and not for the other. The server is shared with go daddy no idea on how many other 3rd party sites are on it. I've filed a reinclusion request for both sites. Any help is more than welcome.

Why are my SERPs fluctuating 60+/- on a weekly basis?
I have a blog that's gone from not indexed, to indexed and ranked around 85 on 3 target key phrases. With a bit of SEO the blog jumped to around 11th on those 3 key phases in a week or so. Now, the following week, it has bombed back to 76th. Why the dramatic fluctuations?

How to get more page impressions?
I'm wondering about one of our web-projects. There's a lot of good interesting content but the statistics of page impressions don't make me very happy. Each user is visiting just 1,5 sites per visit. That's really not much. We have other (similar) projects where this problem does not exist, where user are visiting a lot more sites per visit. I have no idea what could be the reason for it. Do you know / use some tricks to get more page impressions? Thank you, Sally
