Undo a 301 or Starting New Domain?
-
Hi Guys & Gals,
I have a question I'd appreciate your input on.
Quick History
When I first started in web design it was just me and a couple of clients. I had a website based on my name on the domain moxby.org.uk. The only 'SEO' work done on it was a bit of on-site work, various links based on forum and blog activity I was involved in (genuine involvement not crappy link building) and of course, building websites with a credit in the footer. When we got serious about the business we considered and finally put in place a new website, new branding and 301'd old URLs to their shiny new location on the new domain: _summitweb.net _(put in place about 12 months ago)
Ranks were pretty much maintained and until recently we ranked well locally (still figuring the fallout from the last week or so's changes).
The Question I would like to build a personal website, well I'm going to anyway. But as it's a personal/showcase website I need a personal URL for it and my natural choice would be my old url moxby.org.uk. However it is not that simple because summitweb.net is benefitting from redirected links and I don't want to harm our business' rankings just to reclaim a personal URL.
So... is there benefit or would it be to my detriment to undo the 301 and build a website on moxby.org.uk or would it, in fact, just make more sense to buy a new domain and have a clean slate?

Fab, thanks for taking the time to reply that really helps going forward. Much appreciated.

If you were going to do this on a large scale, I'd say don't do it, but as both sites are related to each other by means of you, and there's no reason you can't link to your business site from your personal site, there's not problem with that. The summitweb.net site will get some benefit of having a link to it from the moxby.org.uk site and the the moxby.org.uk site will maintain the benefit it's currently getting from it's inbound links. You're in good shape with that.

Well that was going to be my first reaction, but I didn't know whether that would dilute the link value currently being directed to summitweb.net and inadvertently harm its rankings, just to replace it with one incoming link from moxby.org.uk? Do you think building the site on the first domain is the best of both worlds or risky for the ranking of summitweb.net?
Thanks!

Why not build your website on the _moxby.org.uk domain _ and add a link from it's home page to the summitweb.net and get the best of both worlds?

Redirect old shop to new domain
I have an old Magento shop placed on a subdomain: http://webshop.teamout.dk/ Now I have created a new shop in another store system called ShopOrama on a new rootdomain: What is the best way to get all my already indexed sites from google to redirect to my new site with the new META title + description? I have tried the Magento > Catalog > URL Rewrite, but it contains over 500 redirects already and making custom redirects for all my sites will take a lot of time. Because of the old site being a subdomain I can't change address in GWT. I'm looking forward to your solutions

I have a sub domain that has live content on it but the root domain redirects to another URL. I know this is not great but what are the implications?
I have a subdomain that is populated and has content. The root domain that the sub lives on redirects to an entirely different URL. I am trying to make a case as to why this isn't great besides the fact that it is just weird user experiences. What are the SEO implications etc. Would any equity that gets built up on the subdomain get passed along in the redirect? Or will there be indexation issues with Google? Cheers, Mark

Can new content be added to a url which has a 301 redirect?
I am working on a site which is currently being redesigned. The home page currently ranks highly for relevant search terms, although on the new site the content on this page will be removed. The solution I was considering, to preserve rankings, was to move the content on the home page to a new url, and use a 301 redirect to help preserve rankings for that particular page. The question I have therefore, is am I able to add new content to the home page, and have this page freshly indexed accordingly? Any thoughts or suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks, Matt.

Preferred domain
In GWT it gives an option to do the following but which is best? and why? If you specify your preferred domain as http://www.example.com and we find a link to http://example.com, we'll consider both links the same. | <label for="no_assoc">Don't set a preferred domain</label> |

Domains
My questions is what to do with old domains we own from a past business. Is it advantages to direct them to the new domain/company or is that going to cause a problem for the new company. They are not in the same industry.

301 Redirect
The SEOmoz crawl campaign found some 404 errors in my Joomla site poker-brands.ca. So, I figured I would set up 301 redirects in my hosting account to make sure bots don't read that there is a page missing. For example: This link gave a 404 error in the crawl: http://www.poker-brands.ca/download-pokertracker-software/holdemmanager I redirected it to: http://www.poker-brands.ca/download-pt3-pokertracker-software/holdemmanager-hem-hm2 However, when I visit the first link it doesn't send me to the second link. Am I supposed to get forwarded to the second link now?

Why Google did not index our domain?
Hi, We launched tmart 60 days ago and submitted to google, bing, yahoo 20 days later. But google had never indexed our website still when yahoo indexed it in one week. What we have checked or tried: 1. We got 20~50 inlinks in one month and now 81 inlinks via yahoo site explorer. 2. This domain has registered for 13 years and we purchased it from sedo last year. We

did not find any problems from domain archive pages. 3. Page similar: the homepage is 50% similar to one of our competitors when we just launched.
So we adjusted the page structure and modified the content one month later and decreased the similarity to 30% (by tools from webconfs.com) 4. Google Robots: googlebot crawled our website every day after we submitted for indexing.
We opened GWT account for it and added the xml sitemap last week. GWT said nothing
was wrong except the time of page loading. Our questions: Why google did not indexed our website? What should we do? Thanks, wu0
