HTML verses CMS

Hi
My site is ranking quiet well for the past 10 years although it is becoming a bit dated. I am thinking of revamping it using Modx. Will this affect the ranking . Does a HTML site rank higher then CMS or does it no longer matter. I believe one of the reasons my site ranks so well is because it is a very basic HTML design. Should I just put a new HTML template on it
Thanks

I'm not saying that you should stay away from a CMS. In many cases there are more advantages to using them than there are using something like Dreamweaver. Just be sure that you understand the variety of SEO issues you'll run into when updating your site--regardless of whether you're coding in HTML or using a CMS.

My 2 cents: I still think a CMS site can compete with pure HTML if done in the right way (minimal bloat). Also, if using a CMS like WordPress, you have access to plugins (like Yoast, Smush.it, Google Author Link, Total Cache) that assist with simple things and site-wide changes that would otherwise take a lot of time to adjust.

OK, not so much on the redesign but the basic points are important. Here are some other resources for you.

Niteowl, here's a nice whiteboard Friday on that exact topic that's worth checking out.

Migration from HTML to Wordpress - SEO Implications?
I am in the process of having a wordpress site developed to replace my current HTML site. (I currently have my website in html and a blog in wordpress in a sub directory). I am doing this in phases to try and preserve as much of my good rankings as possible. My first phase is to replicate my site with the exact same pages, meta data, and site structure. I'm hoping that google will see this as not much change and not change my rankings for the worse. I also made it a goal that my site speed tests be at least equal to what they are now. We will have to 301 all of the URLs however since it will be going from /example.html to /example. I believe my blog will also need to move into the root directory as well, so I need to 301 all of those pages. I plan to wait a couple months for Phase 2. Phase 2 involves replacing old content (photo galleries), and introducing new content (virtual tours, videos, new pages, etc.) One of my reasons for moving to wordpress is to keep up with current trends a little easier since I have very little time. (I am owner, website maintainer, SEO - all on my own). My question here is three parts. 1. Do you think this strategy will work to preserve my current rankings? 2. Do you have any lessons learned or advice to share with me to make this as smooth as possible? 3. Do I really need to wait to add new content? I might get antsy and want to do it sooner! 🙂 Thank you in advance!

Is it worth keeping .html even if 301'ing
We're going from static to a wordpress based ecommerce site. While we can append .html to urls the directory structure will change so that www.oursite.com/productname.html goes to www.oursite.com/product/productname.html My question is: Is it worth the trouble (from an seo perspective) of using a plugin to append new urls with .html when we're going to have to use 301 redirects anyway? If not should the urls have a trailing slash?

Converting to WP - Should I add .html or 301?
Moving my site to WP and the old url structure pages end in ".html". I have seen there are plugins that allow you to add .html to the WP pages to preserve links. I am hosting on Synthesis and they do not support htaccess, although you can submit 301 re-directs through the help ticket system. My question is what is the best way to proceed? I have read that 301s "leak" some link juice, but I sure do like those pretty urls. Advice appreciated!

How to put 'Link to this article' HTML code at bottom of article & is it helpful?
Hello, I was thinking about putting a box down at the bottom of my client's main articles that let's the reader easily copy the html code it takes to link to the article they're reading. Maybe I'd put it after the author bio. Do any of you do this? If so, what format do you use? It has to look nice of course. This is a non-techie industry. Thanks.

Suggestions of some video CMS platforms?
Hi SEOmoz Community! Looking for some suggestions on video sharing CMS platforms. I haven't messed around with video sharing for a few years now and seems like a lot of the previous ones I know about are pretty much dead like PHPmotion. If anyone has any good experiences whether paid or free open source platforms, I'd like to hear what are some good options? TIA!

Effects of HTML layout on Arabic websites and SEO
Hi all, I was hoping someone may be able to help. We are putting together an Arabic website and due to reading right to left as opposed to left to right, the site HTML layout is mirrored compared to normal with everything flipped over. What we are wondering is, will this effect SEO and what are the SEO implications of this? Do the search engine bots automaticlaly know to read the content etc differently and understand that everything is purposely mirrored / the HTML is in a different location compared to a site in the UK / US etc? Any help on this would be most appreciated. Cheers!

SEOMoz crawl report shows a duplicate content and duplicate title for these two url's http://freightmonster.com/ and http://freightmonster.com/index.html. How do I fix this?
What page is attached to http://freightmonster.com/ if it is not the index.html ? Should I do a redirect from the index page to something more descriptive?

Duplicate Content for index.html
In the Crawl Diagnostics Summary, it says that I have two pages with duplicate content which are: www.mywebsite.com/ www.mywebsite.com/index.html I read in a Dream Weaver tutorial that you should name your home page "index.html" and then you can let www.mywebsite.com automatically direct the user to index.html. Is this a bug in SEOMoz's crawler or is it a real problem with my site? Thank you, Dan
