Determining Penalization
-
Hello,
I have a site that initially ranked in the first 30 google results for targeted keywords. However, after I contracted out further SEO work to a consultant, my site is nowhere to be found for any keywords. I'm afraid that they have done something to get me penalized, but I'm not sure how I would tell if 1) I have in fact been penalized and 2) what the issue(s) are so I can fix them. Thanks in advance and any help would be appreciated.

I see very few links at all. http://gyazo.com/21b501732b681d58943fe23f92297dbd.png
See that? Zero links on OSE.
ahrefs.com says you have 7 linking root domains. That's nothing. Nothing at all. GWT's link report is the most untrustworthy of all of them, don't pay much heed to what it tells you.
"I'm less concerned with the poor design right now and more concerned with the 0 traffic that's coming to it."
STOP RIGHT THERE!
This mindset needs to change if you want to have any success in your internet marketing campaign. Your website's poor design is the first and foremost reason you are not ranking well and you will most likely never rank well with a poor design. And even if you somehow were able to rank well it wouldn't matter when your bounce rate hovers right around 99% as nobody wants to spend any time on a page with terrible design and nothing going on.
Google's ranking factors have everything to do with your design. And your ability to gain links and retain visitors does as well.
If your site is interesting and unique you will find it much easier to gain links organically. If your site looks like poo you will find it incredibly hard.
If your site has a long average visit duration and low bounce rate Google will notice and determine that people are finding it useful. If people are visiting multiple pages during their time on site you will see this as well. What do your analytics say for these factors? I'd bet they're not good.
Any digital marketer will tell you that your site's design is everything. It's like saying "it doesn't matter what my restaurant looks like, if we don't have a sign on the street nobody will come." That may be true. But when people come in and your restaurant is filthy and you're using lawn furniture purchased from big lots you will quickly find that the place is empty.. YOUR WEBSITE IS YOUR STORE FRONT! Invest in this.
Bottom line is you need a marketing campaign launched for this site. And you need a better site. That's the honest truth and I can't tell you anything different. Nor can anybody else. There's nothing happening with your site preventing it from being ranked. But there's also nothing happening with it causing it to be considered authoritative (which would lead Google to ranking it).
That's the best advice I think I can give you and I wish you the best of luck.

They worked on the site for about 6 or 7 months

Organic link-building. But I'm not sure if it was organic or not. You said you could tell by the domain, do you see the links as "poison"?
-
I'm less concerned with the poor design right now and more concerned with the 0 traffic that's coming to it. I could have the greatest design, but if no one can find it...
-
I see that I have a few links to the Webmaster Tools "links to your site" section, not zero.
-
Yes, I agree the content could be linked better.
-
-
I recommend a company like Portent who has a team of web developers and designers on staff... cause that's definitely an aspect you could use.
-
Okay let's back up a second.
1.) How long did you employ the consultant?
2.) What work did they say they were doing or were going to do? Explain how these services went.
3.) Who designed this website? It needs help. It's so incredibly drab and so strangely arranged. I would be looking at a complete redesign.
4.) You have a total of zero linking root domains with zero links pointing to you. You will never ever rank this way.
5.) Why is your content hidden? By looking at your sitemap I'm able to determine that somewhere you have more than one page and maybe even some articles. But there is absolutely ZERO navigation on your homepage... Why are you hiding this? How would you react if you landed on this page? It looked like it was under construction and nothing more than a form template at first and if I were browsing I would have left immediately.
What's your bounce rate like?
Sorry if this is harsh, but these are a few quick easy things that any SEO worth-a-darn should be able to tell you in mere seconds. Find a new marketing firm who knows what they're doing. It'll change your life.

In order to truly get potential answers to these questions we would need the domain in question. Without it all we could offer is guesses.
As for how to determine penalty, if it is a manual penalty you will see notice in Google Webmaster Tools. Login to your account and find the manual action section as well as the notifications section. However, if it is an algorithmic penalty you will likely not see anything here.
There's a good chance whoever you "contracted" did black-hat SEO tactics and built poison links. This would be the most likely scenario. I could tell you for sure if you gave me the domain... But that'd be my guess from the limited information offered here. I'd definitely fire them ASAP either way if you haven't already.

Penalized for keyword?
Hi There! We have been building our website (https://systemfarmer.hu) for years, and had a great position for the keyword "office 365" in hungary. Now our site dropped in the middle of nowhere in natural search list. Is it possible that google penalized us? Tried to find out the reason without any luck. Thanks! Laszlo

Can I Get Penalized for 301 Redirects (Too Many or In Any Scenario)?
A client of ours owns several domain names that are keyword similar to the domain they actually use to run their site. They are asking us if we should 301 redirect all of these websites to the domain they use. However, I don't want this to work against them and their site get penalized later for this. I have heard buying out competitors and redirecting their domain to yours is frowned upon and penalized when you get caught (they did not do this). We are also wondering if there is a limit as to how many domains you can 301 redirect and what type (keyword similar, misspellings, .net's, etc.) and if you are penalized after too many (i.e. >50). All of the domains in question are keyword/brand name similar only and do not exist as actual websites. We just want to do the right thing. Thank you for your help.

Unable to find why my site was penalized since 24th April
I'm into the 1 month free trail of pro membership for my niche site http://www.creditcardpaymentgateways.in. The traffic dropped from around 250 to 50 on April, 24th but as of now it has recovered some to 100. This site has original content and not a spammy site. Out of all the metrics I see in my PRO Dashboard I'm not at all able to figure out the reason of being penalized. After this penalty I've worked on to reduced the "payment gateway" keyword density from 7-9% to below 5%. Today I notice some rankings upgrade. Overall Seomoz pro membership is useful for very large sites who have dedicated teams to monitor SEO but for me I'm trying to figure out what to do with all those stats.

Hacked Server IP Range Penality?
I use a justhost.com reseller account to host about 15-20 of my own websites. None of the sites are related, nor do I interlink or do anything blackhat with any of them. All of the sites have unique content. Some of it isn't great, but I didn't use a writing service on any of then, it was all written by myself. Recently I found a list of my sites (as well as about 200 others hosted by justhost) on a hacker website that listed the cpanel usernames. I alerted the host and the issue is being fixed. I am changing all of my usernames and passwords for all of the sites. Anyway, I recently took a look at some analytics and rankings and noticed that I lost a lot of my rankings on a handful of those sites recently. I know there was the big de-indexing of junk blogs recently, but I don't think that is the case. I can still find all of my sites in Google, they are just out of the first 50 results, when a majority of them were ranked from 5-20 in the SERPs. Here are three of the sites and their phrases: http://nintendoconsoles.com/ "nintendo consoles" - This domain I bought from someone so there could be some sort of sandbox period for it. http://webhostingfordrupal.com/ "web hosting for drupal" - This was a new register. http://seotirical.com "seotirical" - we don't show up, but all of the tweets and links to us do. - This was a new register. I realize these sites aren't perfect, and might not have been ready for the first page. The Nintendo site is about 3 months old, but the Drupal site has been around for 8+ months. I might try adding a fresh piece of content tonight to see if that helps, but I thought it was curious that it happened across the board with about 5-6 sites on my one reseller account. I don't even know if the top portion of this post has anything to do with the problems, but I thought I'd see if anyone has insight. Cheers,

Penalities in a brand new site, Sandbox Time or rather a problem of the site?
Hi guys, 4 weeks ago we launched a site www.adsl-test.it. We just make some article marketing and developed a lots of functionalities to test and share the result of the speed tests runned throug the site. We have been for weeks in 9th google serp page then suddendly for a day (the 29 of february) in the second page next day the website home is disappeared even to brand search like adsl-test. The actual situalion is: it looks like we are not banned (site:www.adsl-test.it is still listed) GWT doesn't show any suggestion and everything looks good for it we are quite high on bing.it and yahoo.it (4th place in the first page) for adsl test search Anybody could help us to understand? Another think that I thought is that we create a single ID for each test that we are running and these test are indexed by google Ex: www.adsl-test.it/speedtest/w08ZMPKl3R or www.adsl-test.it/speedtest/P87t7Z7cd9 Actually the content of these urls are quite different (because the speed measured is different) but, being a badge the other contents in the page are pretty the same. Could be a possible reason? I mean google just think we are creating duplicate content also if they are not effectively duplicated content but just the result of a speed test?

How does Google determine freshness of content?
With the changes in the Google algorithm emphasizing freshness of content, I was wondering how they determine freshness and what constitutes new content. For instance, if I write a major update to a story I published last July, is the amended story fresh? Is there anything I can do in addition to publishing brand new content to make Google sure they see all my new content?

How can I see if my website was penalize by Google?
Hello, I have a website http://digitaldiscovery.eu that I have been working for 7 months. Everything is alright in the index of the search engines like Google, Bing e Yahoo. I also have like 1000 visits a month wich is not bad for the topic Im pointing at in my country. However my pagerank insist to be on 0, and I really dont understand why. Some of the my competitors that started at the same time, already have a pagerank of 3 and they do not have the same visitors that I do. In the rank system of Alexa im climbing very fast and the visits of my website are growing. So why does the pagerank dont climb aswell?! Tks in advance, Pedro M Pereira

Google Penalize?
Hello, I read an statement somewhere which stated: "2 identical URLs linked to 2 different popular key phrases next to each other (on the same website/domain) will lead to a Google penalize. Google knows, that both terms are popular. This means, Google will ignore the links to your site (you'll not have any benefit) and the site you have your links on loses authority." What are your thoughts on this statement? Thank you.
