Nice looking ecommerce menus with featured product categories - bad for SEO due to duplicate content?
-
My ecommerce website has menus which contain 'featured product sub-categories'. These are shown alongside the other product sub-category links. Each 'featured product category' includes a link, an image (with link) and some text.
All menu content is visible to search engines.
These menus look nice and probably encourage CTR (not tested!) but are they bad for SEO?

Thanks, I think I'll just leave these for now as it's only three sub categories that have the 'tripling up' of links. Appreciate you both taking the time to reply.

Hello Coraltoes,
I would not rely on a nofollow attribute for those links. Instead, you could approach this in several different ways...
#1. Don't worry about it. If you're talking about an extra few links it really isn't going to make that big of a difference, though the text link should probably be first since it has the best anchor text.
#2. Remove them and rely on sub-navigation in the sidebar for sending people to the "featured" section of each category.
#3. Put the Featured fly-out navigation in javascript, while keeping the rest of the main navigation in HTML/CSS.
#4. Sometimes it is possible to wrap a single href tag around an image AND text, which would cut the superfluous links in half.
If you discuss these options with your developers perhaps some other ideas will come to light as well.
Good luck!

I may be relying on out-of-date information. I read about this here

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, the same link is displayed three times in the navigation menu (so two repeats)! There are 3 of these featured menu items in total.
I thought the official line from Google was no to nofollows for internal links? Has this changed?

Are you saying that you have the same link displayed multiple times in your navigation menu? If so, you should probably rel="nofollow" the duplicates.

Will google consider page 1 and page 2 as duplicate content? Page 1. You will find all the Amazon coupon codes and Amazon discount codes currently available listed below, if Amazon doesn't currently have any coupons available you may want to check for Amazon deals or find related coupon codes or promotional codes for similar online stores selling the same products as amazon.
We always have the latest coupon codes for Amazon which are updated daily, so if you can't find any Amazon coupons here then you won't find them anywhere else.
Shop online today at Amazon, and take advantage of the coupon codes that Amazon currently has on offer, these coupon codes, offer codes, and promo codes for Amazon may never be available again. Page 2. You will find all the Target coupon codes and Target discount codes currently available listed below, if Target doesn't currently have any coupons available you may want to check for Target deals or find related coupon codes or promotional codes for similar online stores selling the same products as Target.
We always have the latest coupon codes for Target which are updated daily, so if you can't find any Target coupons here then you won't find them anywhere else.

Duplicate Content - Blog Rewriting
I have a client who has requested a rewrite of 250 blog articles for his IT company. The blogs are dispersed on a variety of platforms: his own website's blog, a business innovation website, and an IT website. He wants to have each article optimised with keyword phrases and then posted onto his new website thrice weekly. All of this is in an effort to attract some potential customers to his new site and also to establish his company as a leader in its field. To what extent would I need to rewrite each article so as to avoid duplicating the content? Would there even be an issue if I did not rewrite the articles and merely optimised them with keywords? Would the articles need to be completely taken by all current publishers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Duplicate Content only an Issue on a Huge Scale?
To what extent is duplicate content an issue? We have a support forum with some duplicate content because users ask the same questions. The Moz reports we receive highlights our duplicate content and page title for our support forum as a "big" issue. I'm unsure to what extent it harms our SEO, and making the support section non-crawable would impair our level of support. It would be nice to know for sure if we should be concerned about this, and if yes, how can we do it differently? Thanks, I appreciate you help. -Allan

Fresh Content Strategy - What does it look like?
I understand the growing importance fo content freshness, but I have some questions about how to incorporate content freshness components into an existing SEO strategy: Here are some specific questions I would love some help with: If I have a specific "product or services" page that is properly optimized, and getting a decent amount of traffic, would I benefit from updating/modifying the content on a routine basis to improve rankings? In general, should I be considering an occasional re-fresh of content on my site even if I don;t necessarily have anything new to say? For my homepage, if I am pulling in headlines from various news and events sections within my own site, and those sections are updated pretty frequently, is my homepage going to be viewed as fresh when the site gets re-crawled? In other words, is updating my homepage via rss feeds that pull from content areas from within my site keeping my homepage "fresh"? Thanks!

Suggestions to avoid duplicate content
Hi, we have about 6500 products, almost all with descriptions. SEOMOZ is showing about 2500 of them with duplicate content. The reason for this is that only one or two words are different for each product. For example, we have 500 award certificates. All are the same size and have the same description. But one is swimming, one baseball, one reading, etc, etc. Apparently the 1 word difference is not enough to differentiate. We have the same issue with our trophies - they are identical, except for figures. Does anyone have any good tips on how to change the content to avoid this issue and to avoid making up content for 2500 items? Thanks! Neil trophycentral.com

Duplicate content issue in SEOmoz campaign.
Hi, We are running a campaign for a website in SEOmoz. We get a dup content issue warning: http://www.oursite.com and http://www.oursite.com/ are being seen as 2 different urls. Only difference among 2 urls is the trailing slash at the end of the second url. Why is this happening? I was aware of www vs non www but never heard of an issue related to the slash. Thanks for your help!
