Too many navigational links
-
Hi there,
I have an issue with the amount of internal links on my webpages.
Moz campaign manager gives a lot of 'too many on page links' issues. Over 7000.
I know the importance of a good internal linking structure.1. Not too many internal links (over approximately 100) is good for flowing through some authority from authoritive pages.
2. Too many internal links can spend all of the 'crawler budget' so the crawlers won't crawl the complete website anymore (right?). This can cause problems with indexing new webpages (right?).This is the situation:
- The website is a webshop
- The header contains 6 links, the footer contains 32 links, the homepage contains 42 links, the body content of some category pages contains a variated amount of links from 30 to a maximum of 100 links. Product pages do contain a maximum of 25 links. There is no problem here.
Now here's the problem:
- The website navigation is a dropdown menu that contains 167 links to tier 2. These links are very important for our visitors. They can immediately find the right category/product by it. Removing or shrinking this dropdown is not an option.
But the dropdown navigation is causing all of the 'too many on page links' issues.
Question: is there a SEO (indexing, PA) problem in this situation which i should solve? What should I solve and how should I solve this?
Note: pages have good organic positions and authority.
Thanks a lot.
Marcel

Hello Peter,
Thank you for your very clear answer. I was thinking about collecting user behaviour data for this dropdown menu by using Analytics' onclick event trackers. Your idea is way better to use a clickmap or heatmap!
I checked the internal links again and I think there must be a way to cut out some unimportant product categories in the navigation menu and cut out some non-essential footer links.
So, I am not going to change my winning team drastically. I am going to collect some data and I will decide after that what to do with all the links in the dropdown menu.
Once again, thanks for the help. I can move on now.

When you say 7,000, do you mean that you have 7,000 links on each page or that 7,000 pages show a "too many links" warning? I'm having trouble resolving 7K with your other numbers.
Ultimately, it's a balancing act, as I wrote about a while back:
http://moz.com/blog/how-many-links-is-too-many
The more links you have, the less love each page you link to will get. It's not just SEO - it's anything. The more options you give people, typically, the less attention each option will get. So, it's a balancing act. Highlighting more options might get link equity to more places, but it'll be spread thinner. There's really no way in 2013 to get around that.
On the usability side, I'd only ask this (from many prior experiences) - do you have data to back up that these links are very important for visitors? I've found many times that, once we did user testing or click mapping (like Crazy Egg), "essential" secondary navigation links turned out to be rarely used. Even now, many visitors to many site (especially non-technical sites) don't really understand or use dropdowns, especially multi-level ones. Too often, these links are important to management, not the actual visitors. I don't know your audience or your site, so I don't mean to make assumptions, but I'd strongly encourage you to collect that data, if you haven't.
As Miki said, if you're generally ranking well, and if these links really do have user value, then I wouldn't do anything drastic. There may be ways to prune a few non-essential links or maybe fine-tune your information architecture, but slashing away at them may do more harm than good.

If you are already enjoying good rankings in the SERPS, I would not worry about this issue. Rather, I would spend your time developing your site more with good content, as well as continuing to try to build high quality links.

That's what I thought too. But I'm still affraid search engine spiders can't find their way no more in some time. The worst pages has 305 links on it. And building up the authority costs a lot of money.
Will solving these issues bring a lot of benefits?

If "Removing or shrinking this dropdown is not an option.," AND "pages have good organic positions and authority" - I would not worry about the error - continue to build authority and valuable content and you'll be fine. Look how many internal links Amazon has, and they are doing just fine in the SERPS.

Internal Links issue in webmaster
we implemented our website on the basis of WordPress, then we migrate our website to PHP (YII Framework). after a while, we found out an issue around internal links which they were increasing severely. when we check our landing pages in webmaster (for example Price list), in contains 300 internal links but the reality is that there are no href tags on this page. it seems that webmaster calculate most of our links with the links of a single page and show them to us. is it natural or a mis configuration has been happened? I'm working with a client that has a page which has many internal links to the same page .
Let me illustrate it.
So as you can see I have a page which is called in the image "page" :D.
As you can see, the **page **has many links to the solutions.htmls' anchor links which mean they are basically the same page ( solutions.html)
Is it going to be a problem for us to do that ?
And is there anyway to handle this problem?
Thank you for you patience. And sorry for my bad english 😄 4deRc1W.png0 -
Better to Remove Toxic/Low Quality Links Before Building New High Quality Links?
Recently an SEO audit from a reputable SEO firm identified almost 50% of the incoming links to my site as toxic, 40% suspicious and 5% of good quality. The SEO firm believes it imperative to remove links from the toxic domains. Should I remove toxic links before building new one? Or should we first work on building new links before removing the toxic ones? My site only has 442 subdomains with links pointing to it. I am concerned that there may be a drop in ranking if links from the toxic domains are removed before new quality ones are in place. For a bit of background my site has a MOZ Domain authority of 27, a Moz page authority of 38. It receives about 4,000 unique visitors per month through organic search. About 150 subdomains that link to my site have a Majestic SEO citation flow of zero and a Majestic SEO trust flow of zero. They are pretty low quality. However I don't know if I am better off removing them first or building new quality links before I disavow more than a third of the links to the site. Any ideas? Thanks,

Link juice and 301 redirects
Hi, I have a page with a lot of links going to it. I want to change the name of the page (thereby changing the URL). I can do a 301 redirect, but does a 301 send the "link juice" to the new page? The page in question is www.aerlawgroup.com/dui.html, and I want to change it to www.aerlawgroup.com/dui-lawyer.html. Thank you in advance for your time.

Developing a link profile.....
So we are a brand new site looking to establish a link profile of earned links vs. manipulative link building practices and have received some conflicting information. Our goal is to provide users and webmasters of relevant websites with useful content about the areas and topics we cover and let them decide to link to us. We have been advised by some parties that in order to develop a base set of links we should enter our website into directories. Now I understand entering it into some of the main directories such as BOTW and Yahoo etc, but please offer your thoughts on smaller less official directories. Thanks in advance. Scott

Should links to tech data sheet be no follow?
I'm an SEO beginner, and on a new ecommerce (shopify) store I have a collection of paint. Each of the 52 products will link to the technical data sheet PDF. Should these links be no follow? or noreferrer? If all the links to this PDF signal that it is important - it is not more important than the home or product collection pages. Thanks!

External Links from own domain
Hi all, I have a very weird question about external links to our site from our own domain. According to GWMT we have 603,404,378 links from our own domain to our domain (see screen 1) We noticed when we drilled down that this is from disabled sub-domains like m.jump.co.za. In the past we used to redirect all traffic from sub-domains to our primary www domain. But it seems that for some time in the past that google had access to crawl some of our sub-domains, but in december 2010 we fixed this so that all sub-domain traffic redirects (301) to our primary domain. Example http://m.jump.co.za/search/ipod/ redirected to http://www.jump.co.za/search/ipod/ The weird part is that the number of external links kept on growing and is now sitting on a massive number. On 8 April 2011 we took a different approach and we created a landing page for m.jump.co.za and all other requests generated 404 errors. We added all the directories to the robots.txt and we also manually removed all the directories from GWMT. Now 3 weeks later, and the number of external links just keeps on growing: Here is some stats: 11-Apr-11 - 543 747 534 12-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 13-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 14-Apr-11 - 554 066 716 15-Apr-11 - 521 528 014 16-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 17-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 18-Apr-11 - 515 098 895 19-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 20-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 21-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 26-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 27-Apr-11 - 520 404 181 28-Apr-11 - 603 404 378 I am now thinking of cleaning the robots.txt and re-including all the excluded directories from GWMT and to see if google will be able to get rid of all these links. What do you think is the best solution to get rid of all these invalid pages. moz1.PNG moz2.PNG moz3.PNG
