Significant drop in web rankings
-
We have two websites and last week we had a significant drop in search engine rankings. Some of these search rankings we have been top 3 for the past 5 years and now we are not in the top 20.
Last weekend we changed our hosting provider and IP addresses for the first time in over 7 years.
Now is there a way we could work out if we have been hit by the latest Penguin update or if the change in hosting / IP has caused these drop in rankings?
I would appreciate any thought or ideas at all.

My site experienced a 60-70% drop in google organic traffic too, late on Friday 11th October/early Saturday 12th October, and hasn't recovered at all yet. Is this when you experienced a drop too? There doesn't seem to be any online chatter from anyone else experiencing a similar drop. I had thought I'd managed to avoid any ranking drop following the latest Penguin/Hummingbird, but it looks like a delayed reaction!

Last weekend you changed your hosting provider and IP addresses. It is now monday, a drop in the SERP is not likely noticed within 1/2 days. Seems to me not the issue.
Penguin update should have a notible effect way earlier than last weekend. So when did the drop in the SERP occurred?

No problem Lewis, but thanks for the link to the Chrome plugin. I didn't know about that one. Very helpful - thank you.

Have you received any notifications in your Google Webmaster Tools account with regards to a penalty? You can usually find this by going to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ and clicking on 'Search Traffic > Manual Actions'. Alternatively, you might have a message in there.
This would only show for a manual penalty, so if you've received a penalty due to an algorithm, this is a bit harder to spot. The easiest way to do this is look at the date your traffic dropped and comparing this with the updates that Google have released - http://moz.com/google-algorithm-change - The moz link there has a list of all known updates.
Alternatively, you could look at the following plugin which will overlay over a chart over the top of your analytics results and give you an indication of when penalties have come in along with your traffic drops.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/chartelligence/njhdcfdiifemfnfddhfjmfbkajajceag?hl=enI wouldn't have thought that moving hosting provide / IP would cause you any huge drops in the search engines. Maybe a little bit of fluctuation, but nothing significant. Where is your new server located in relation to your store location?
EDIT: I started writing my response before any other comments were posted, so looks like Peter beat me to it on most of the points

Hi, if you have Google webmaster tools then you will be able to see in there if you have suffered a penalty from Google, but if nothing has been said to you by Google that could still mean your site has suffered a Penguin slap.
I don't think a change in hosting or IP address will have as significant an impact as you describe. That said, a question re the change... do all of the page addresses on the newly hosted site have the same page addresses with your previous host? If they don't that is most likely your problem.
Without seeing your site then it's difficult to tell you more, but I hope that helps.

Product pages and rank brain
Hello, On product pages does the content matter or does the presentation and answering the user intent matter more ? I know for informational query content definitely matters but with rank brain, I am thinking that for pages where your present product content doesn't matter as much ? Am I right ? Thank you,

Ranking 1st for a keyword - but when 's' is added to the end we are ranking on the second page
Hi everyone - hope you are well. I can't get my head around why we are ranking 1st for a specific keyword, but then when 's' is added to the end of the keyword - we are ranking on the second page. What could be the cause of this? I thought that Google would class both of the keywords the same, in this case, let's say the keyword was 'button'. We would be ranking 1st for 'button', but 'buttons' we are ranking on the second page. Any ideas? - I appreciate every comment.

Spike then Drop in Direct Traffic?
We've been doing some SEO work over the last few weeks and earlier this week we saw a large spike in traffic. Yay we all thought, but then yesterday the traffic levels returned to pre-celebratory levels. I've been doing some digging to try and find out what was different Monday and Tuesday this week. Mondays are usually big traffic days for us anyway, but this week was by far the biggest, and Tuesday was even higher still, our best day ever. After some poking, I found that the direct traffic followed the same pattern as our overall traffic levels (image attached). The first spike coincides with an email we sent out that day, but the later spike we just don't know where it came from? I understand loosely that direct isn't easily traceable, but can anyone help us understand more about this second spike? Thanks! ayqL2wi

Across the board drops in DA
Hi, has anyone noticed across the board drops in DA in specific industries lately? If you're tracking 5 companies in one industry it seems odd that all five would drop 2-3 DA points all at once don't you think? Just peculiar I think and would love some insight if there is some to be had / shared.

Our website www.turbocupones.com dropped drastically in ranking today. I have no idea why this happened as we have not outsourced any SEO and sticked to google´s guidelines. Can you please check the web and give me Ideas why this happened? Our traffic dropped by 1000%. All our content is unique. I have years of experience in SEO and never had a problem like this. The rankings dropped drastically for everything. As said all SEO done is white hat. Thanks!

What would cause a sudden rise and drop in keyword ranking?
I made one change to my site - creating a good, relevant, title. A few days later, ranking for a keyword jumped pretty well - which is what I was expecting. We were ranked 9th. Then the next ranking report showed a 20 place decline. What would cause this?

Dropping dramatically in keyword rankings
One of my clients has always ranked well for this keyword (janitorial services, nh). Then within a week, they dropped out of the top fifty in Google and now in other major search engines as well. My first thought of why the drop in rankings is due to duplicate listings within online directories. The previous marketing person on staff was listing the company more than once in these directories, and it wasn't discovered until later in the link building process. Sometimes the company was listed with "janitorial services" as part of the company name, and then listed again with "carpet cleaning" as part of the company name... sometimes with duplicate address, or using the po box instead - as if two companies. The odd thing in all this is that while they dropped in ranking for this keyword, they still come in usually 1st in Google Places for this keyword with 12 excellent reviews. And yet when I check their Google Places account, it says that it needs to be reverified, again, it doesn't meet the terms. (company is a family owned business, for over 30 years, they have a lot of potential). So all this duplication needs to be fixed, but how serious are duplicate listings on places like Manta, YellowPages, SuperPages, also Yahoo Business Local and Bing Business Directory? And now that "forensics" seems to be my task, any suggestions on how to start? Any processes I should go through with Google WebMaster? _Cindy And, too, if I could add, the site ranks very poorly for this keyword and while I have provided recommendations, and they understand the onsite issue, they have yet to go forward with implementation, making this a little more difficult issue.
