Google Manual Penalty - Unnatural Links

Hi,
We are in the process of trying to remove a partial manual penalty for unnatural links. I would like to do a complete link audit of our site, where can I get complete data on sites linking to my website? Webmaster tools only appears to show the top 1000 domains.

You'll get way more than 1000 links from WMT. It says you get links from the top 1000 domains but it's usually quite a bit more. I have had some spreadsheets from WMT that contain over 30,000 links.
John Mueller (Google employee) once said that WMT was all you needed in order to remove a penalty. So, for over a year that's all I used. However, in the last couple of months since Google has started to give examples of unnatural links when a site fails, many of those examples are not in WMT! I think what John meant was that you could see the patterns in WMT such as articles, directories, etc. and then use those patterns to find additional links. But, if you don't have a list of all of the links that you have made then that is not going to work for most people.
So, now, what I do is combine the links from WMT, ahrefs.com, majestic SEO and Open Site Explorer. It's a pain. I've written a script that combines them for me but it still takes me quite a while to put them together.
With that being said, I have removed penalties from some sites by just using the WMT links. And then I've had other ones that Google has been really nitpicky on and has not removed the penalty until we addressed every single self made link.

I would recommend using Majestic SEO in this instance. So long as you are working on a website which you can verify as your own, you will be eligible to free link data from Majestic SEO. They can explain better than me:

It isn't free but Link Detox is quite handy for showing links/ showing which links need to be gotten rid of.

Hello, you should be able to find more links than a 1000 from Google Webmaster tools. It's also worth trying Bing and majestic as mentioned above. This is a great resource to get you on your way...

Internal Linking - Can You Over Do It?
Hi, One of the sites I'm working on has a forum with thousands of pages, amongst thousands of other pages. These pages produce lots of organic search traffic... 200,000 per month. We're using a bit of custom code to link relevant words and phrases from various discussion threads to hopefully related discussion pages. This generates thousands of links and up to 8 in-context links per page. A page could have anywhere from 200 to 3000 words in one to 50+ comments. Generally, a page with 200 words would have fewer of these automatically generated links, just because there are fewer terms naturally on the page. Is there any possible problem with this, including but not limited to some kind of internal anchor text spam or anything else? We do it to knit together pages for link juice and hopefully user experience... giving them another page to go to. The pages we link to are all our pages that produce or we hope to produce organic search traffic from. Thanks! ....Darcy

Unnatural links warning and steps to fix it
Hi there, Firstly our website is - imrubbish.co.uk Basically we were unintentionally using a rogue seo company for about 5 months who charged a lot of money and built absolute rubbish quality links. When i saw the type of links being built i immediately stopped them as i knew they were bad news but the damage had been done. I have since moved to a completely ethical seo company who for the past 6 months have tried with me to remove this penalty without success. Here are the steps we have taken. Unnatural links warning. Submitted a file with all the links we know are bad and resubmitted. Not good enough We then used disavow tool as there were so many links we had no control of. Along with a detailed write up of what has happened and who had done it. Not good enough Now the problem my seo guy thinks is because there are more and more links appearing almost daily that are still left over rubbish from the old seo company. I think there might also be other problems - maybe my anchor test distribution is spammy etc, i dont know and i am hoping someone can maybe help with a couple more pointers. I have asked a similar question before where there was a discussion about even just leaving it and concentrating on building more ethical links with brand anchor text but that was not working so we used the disavow tool. We have been stuck in this rut for over a year now and could really do with some extra help/guidance from anyone who has experience or knowledge of what we should do. I saw the post yesterday about this very subject and hope someone could help drill done specifically what could be the problem in our case. We would also look at hiring someone if they could help. How do you find out sites banned from Google? I know how to find out sites no longer cached, or is it the same thing once deindexed? As always aprpeciate your advice everyone.

Measurement of Link Value
Over the past few months I have encountered webmasters who claim to be using instruments far better than open site explorer but they will not disclose what they are. Are there better ways of determining the value of a link than OSE? Is "link juice" more important than page/domain authority where the link resides? Or vice-vesa. Any help understanding this would be appreciated. I do not want to offend other webmasters but I also do not want to be fooled by them either while negotiating a link exchange with them

Link Architecture - Xenu Link Sleuth Vs Manual Observation Confusion
Hi, I have been asked to complete some SEO contracting work for an e-commerce store. The Navigation looked a bit unclean so I decided to investigate it first. a) Manual Observation Within the catalogue view, I loaded up the page source and hit Ctrl-F and searched "href", turns out there's 750 odd links on this page, and most of the other sub catalogue and product pages also have about 750 links. Ouch! My SEO knowledge is telling me this is non-optimal. b) Link Sleuth I crawled the site with Xenu Link Sleuth and found 10,000+ pages. I exported into Open Calc and ran a pivot table to 'count' the number of pages per 'site level'. The results looked like this - Level Pages 0 1 1 42 2 860 3 3268 Now this looks more like a pyramid. I think is is because Link Sleuth can only read 1 'layer' of the Nav bar at a time - it doesnt 'hover' and read the rest of the nav bar (like what can be found by searching for "href" on the page source). Question: How are search spiders going to read the site? Like in (1) or in (2). Thankyou!
