Blog on subdomain?
-
Hello, I am going to add a blog to my site.
I use cloudfront CDN to host my whole site (its a 1 page parallax type thing now)
With cloudfront I can not easily do dynamic content but it is possible. So I have a few options
blog.mydomain.com pointing to a regular server
www.mydomain.com/blog/ uploading static html pages for my blog, its a slight hassel but not too badWhat could be best for SEO? will having blog.mydomain.com be seen that much differently to google? are they smart enough to see it as just another section of my site?
Another spanner in the works is that I have a domain for australia and a totally different domain for international sales with no content or structure duplication between them
Could I maybe be better off with a myname.wordpress.com blog and linking it to both my domains?
There are a ton of spam wordpress blogs so I am not sure what would be best. My blog will not be intended for just SEO purposes. -
As an update, here's a link to the Web Developer's SEO Cheat Sheet by Moz. They do recommend the www.domain.com/blog:

Thanks!

Thanks for pointing that out - I had no idea. In the video Matt Cutts says subdomains are "likely" to be treated like subfolders. The change was also confirned here: http://www.seroundtable.com/subdomains-google-webmaster-tools-13960.html
I wonder how other search engines treat them? More research required...

I thought Google stopped treating subdomains as separate entities? In the follow video, Matt Cutts says that they're essentially the same as subdirectories now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MswMYk05tk&feature=youtube_gdata
Have you seen evidence that shows otherwise? Not challenging your answer here; I'm genuinely curious.

Thanks and yes I thought you were saying Subdirectory.
It makes sense to me and google always changes its mind but an actual part of the site there is no chance of googles view changing like it could with subdomains.
Redesign is not a problem, Im pretty good with linux tools like "sed" and with regular expressions. I may even roll my own PHP template generator, seems faster than learning one of these static site generators that people use for static blogs.
Wordpress is a little slow, I have my own server that is very under utilised and even with an empty database WP ads around 400ms of lag

Yes... I typed a bit to quickly.
Thanks, Alex... my recommendation is the sub-directory, http://www.domain.com/blog/ as the best practice.
Thanks!

Jeff's answer is good with regards to the sub-domain/folder debate but,
"My recommendation is to go with the subdomain, and there are a whole lot of articles that back this up:"
I think he meant subdirectory?! That would be my recommendation anyway.
One big problem with uploading static HTML files is that if you redesign your site and want historical content to match the redesign, you'll have to update every single HTML file.
There are also lots of high-quality Wordpress blogs so that's not really an issue. www.mydomain.com/blog/ is the way to go if you can. Whether to have it on your Australian or international site depends on which audience the content is aimed at.

This question has been a big topic in the past.
The general thought is that:
blog.mydomain.com --> content on the blog. is treated as a different site, and SEO efforts (content, inbound links, social media) only help the subdomain.
mydomain.com/blog --> subdirectories are usually the way to go. All of the content, inbound links and social media shares will help build the overall domain authority for you.
My recommendation is to go with the subdomain, and there are a whole lot of articles that back this up:
http://moz.com/community/q/blog-on-subdomain-vs-subdirectory-best-practices
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/subdomains-and-subdirectories/
http://moz.com/community/q/best-place-for-a-blog-blog-mydomain-com-or-mydomain-com-blog
For the static vs. dynamic content: I would recommend the subdirectory structure, even if you have to have the pages published statically. Although it's more of a pain, static pages will load much faster for your end users than dynamic ones, so you're essentially putting in a full page caching mechanism.
Hope this helps...

Blog post back link
Hi, I am new to SEO and I am planning to hire someone in Fiverr regularly to submit different guest posts on the different related topic on the website with a good domain authority (>60) as a result to have some quality inbound links. As I am writing the guest post myself, May I know how many backlinks should I have per post are best for SEO? and should I only focus on anchor text backlinks? Also, here is my understanding of what I should be careful when hiring someone on Fiverr to do a blog post, please let me know if I am wrong and if there is another thing I need to be careful. It needs to be dofollow link It is permanent I check the website domain authority and spam sore that the person provides before using it. Please let me know if I missed out something. Appreciated Kind regards Chris

Blog farm?
One of our clients has recently been approached by a competitor regarding a Link building service and SEO and as part of this they have supplied example sites that they "contact" to post articles that contain a link or links back to our client site. When we researched these sites we found that the sites did in fact have a good Domain Authority but the content was extremley dubious and the links were often forced into the articles in unnatural context. We also found that the Author page of these sites often had a similar URLs but the display names were changed. On the face of it these article sites look like a good idea and to an untrained eye they could appear good value. In fact they could be passing good value and may in fact work. I have found around 150 sites that i think share simialr traits but i gave up and I am sure there are many more. My opinion is that this looks like a large farm of blogs that are utilising similar templates and author set up. I am just looking for any experience/thoughts on how to look at this. My feeling is that i dont want to be in anyway recommending this as a service yet my client may think that this is good value. Any experiences shared would be great. thanks in advance for any comments.

How does PageRank pass through a backlink on a subdomain vs. subdirectory?
Scenario 1: I earn a link on exampleblog.root.com/example-page/. The DA is 90, but it's a brand new page so PA is 0. Subdomain is also new, zero backlinks. Scenario 2: I earn a link on root.com/example-page/. The DA is 90, PA is still new so 0 for now. My assumption is that PR will flow from the homepage through the subdirectory then ultimately to my domain. If the subdomain doesn't inherit any of the root-level metrics, then should I even be worried about the DA in scenario 1? What are the seo implications between the 2 scenarios?

External linking on a company blog
This has been bothering me for a long time. Our company has a sub-domain blog that gets a respectable amount of traffic but not a lot of SER. Most of our traffic comes from social shares (although we do rank really high for a few key searches). The blog manager is convinced that providing external links to additional resources or source material "dilutes the SEO juice" for the blog. URLs are provided, but they aren't linked. Attempts to sway her to the idea that external links are actually Good Things® have been stonewalled. Tell me I'm right and why.

Getting two BOTW.org listings? Regular drirectory + blog directory?
I have a start-up website. It's a niche market that's not all that competitive. I'm trying to get going with some basic link building, and I'm trying to focus for the time being on some recommended directories: BOTW, yahoo, business.com, etc. I already have a regular BOTW directory listing, accepted a few days ago. I'm wondering if it's worth also getting a BOTW blog directory listing? So two BOTW listings, the first pointing to the homepage, the second would point to the blog. If there is meaningful link juice to be passed, would there be an advantage of having two links? Or will the one I already have suffice? Also, since the site is new, I only have a few blog posts. Is BOTW likely to reject me because my blog is too thin? The posts I have are content-heavy (1000-2500 words per entry), but there's just not a large total quantity yet. Normally I wouldn't consider it, but they're having a cyber-monday sale today where it's 50% off the regular price, so it makes the decision easier. Thanks.

Does a Subdomain Blog Pass Juice?
I have a client who has their blog on a subdomain instead of subfolder. Unfortunately, the eCommerce platform they are using does not allow them to implement a blog in the subfolder. So now we are looking at growing their blog as a means to drive more traffic to the main site. The blog is a mirror of the eCommerce site's navigation with the main content section being a blog rather than products. Will publishing content and building links to the subdomain blog pass authority to the main site?

Getting a link from a blog on every page querying what OSE is suggesting
Hi Guys My client has been offered a link from someone within their industry on their blog. The blog has 20 categories and multiple (hundreds if not more pages within each category). The owner of the website has said that would be happy to give my client a link on each of their pages (including their homepage). They have done this for another couple of people who they like before, so I typed these domains into OSE and noticed that for each page it shows a link and also the page authority. Domain Authority of this blog giving the link is 71 Home Page PA - 76 About us PA - 60 it goes on.........the least PA being shown is 52 so lets for arguements sake say the other 18 or say categories are PA of 52 too. My question is surely the OSE is not accurate to imply that my client could be passed page authority from 18 categories at 52 each + home page of 76 + about me page of 60? Hopefully you understand the point I'm trying to make
