I want to place reviews from a review site also on my client's website, what's the right way to do that?
-
My client is doing a good job fitting rooftops out with solar panels. his customers are happy and ready to show this in online reviews. He has a partnership with a review site that gives him new leads, but I just don't want him to lose this valuable reviews just to this one review site..
Here's what i came up with and I love to hear your opinion on this;
I'll copy the content of the solarpanel review site, place it on my client's website in hreview. the contents canonical will be rightfully set to the review site, this way I want to avoid the duplicate content thing, but get the hard earned yellow stars in my client's SERPs. and show the visitors of my clien't s site what a great job he is doing, on his own website..This is the first time I thought of this solution and I wonder if I'm forgetting something.. Is this solution safe with Google/Bing/Yahoo?

Hi Van,
Good question! I'll do my best to answer.
There are two forms of customer feedback:
-
Reviews published on third party sites. This would be reviews customers are publishing directly, themselves, on your company's profiles at places like Google+ Local, Yelp etc. This content belongs to the platform on which it is published. It does not belong to the business owner and should not be republished on his website. Many review platforms have guidelines specifically prohibiting the re-publication of reviews elsewhere.
-
Testimonials published on the company's website. This would be praise the business owner receives from customers via email, filling out a rating card at the time of service or by some other means. In this case, the business owner chooses to publish this content on his website. He can use Schema markup to format these testimonials so that they are ideally crawlable, and may even earn the business stars in Google's SERPs. In this scenario, the business owner owns the content and is free to publish it on a Testimonials page of his website or something similar.
These two forms of user generated content should not be confused. They each exist in a separate 'box' and each have distinct uses.
I'm very excited these days about a recently launched tool, GetFiveStars.com, that makes it super easy for any business to earn both testimonials and reviews, keeping within the guidelines I've mentioned, above. Using GetFiveStars, the process for the business owner will look something like this:
-
At or near time of service, business owner asks customer to use GetFiveStars to leave feedback.
-
The tool is programmed to judge if the feedback is positive, based on a 10 point rating scale. If positive, the feedback is automatically pushed to a designated testimonials page on the website in Schema-encoded format.
-
The customer is then prompted to go further in the process to leave a review on their favorite review site.
-
But, if the initial feedback is not positive, this gives the business owner the chance to go back to the customer to try to rectify the situation, hopefully lessening the chances that the customer will go leave a negative review somewhere on the web.
Really, it a pretty brilliant system. You could replicate this process yourself, but GetFiveStars makes it so easy. I recommend you check it out!

Changing existing URL's to improve SEO
Here's a general question: At what PR/page rank (or Moz 'page authority') would you no longer change an existing URL that's cryptic to one that includes the related page keyword or at least relevant terms? Does using a 301 redirect to the new URL preserve the page rank? Thanks!

Do sites with more pages rank better?
If a site has more pages and also has good internal linking, then logically it would rank better. Is this the case? Should I be building big (but high quality) sites?

Should I remove 'local' landing pages? Could these be the cause of traffic drop (duplicate content)?
I have a site that has most of it's traffic from reasonably competitive keywords each with their own landing page. In order to gain more traffic I also created landing pages for counties in the UK and then towns within each county. Each county has around 12 towns landing pages within the county. This has meant I've added around 200 extra pages to my site in order to try and generate more traffic from long tail keywords. I think this may have caused an issue in that it's impossible for me to create unique content for each town/country and therefore I took a 'shortcut' buy creating unique content for each county and used the same content for the towns within it meaning I have lots of pages with the same content just slightly different page titles with a variation on town name. I've duplicated this over about 15 counties meaning I have around 200 pages with only about 15 actual unique pages within them. I think this may actually be harming my site. These pages have been indexed for about a year an I noticed about 6 months ago a drop in traffic by about 50%. Having looked at my analytics this town and county pages actually only account for about 10% of traffic. My question is should I remove these pages and by doing so should I expect an increase in traffic again?

Building an optimised friendly website
We are in the process of having a new website built and was wondering what factors do we need do we need to instruct our web company to include, at the build phase, to ensure that we can easily optimise it for SEO purposes. They have designed us a previous site that has excessive duplicate URLs and they haven’t given us access to the code so we can’t add 301 redirects etc and would like to avoid this in the future. I look forward to hearing from you

Competitor Out Ranks My Site
Hi This is my first question on SEOMoz and I am confused how a competitor can out rank me for a local search term SEO Tamworth. I have a higher Page Authority, Domain Authority, Number of links etc.. Would this be down to the quality of the links to my site or could it be down to the structure. I score an A for SEO on the on page analysis. Regards James

Not using H1's with keywords to simulate natural non SEO'd content?
There has been a lot of talk lately about making a website seem like it is not SEO'd to avoid over optimization penalties with the recent Google Algorithmic updates. Has anyone come across the practice of not using Headings (H1's, H2's etc..) properly to simulate that the current webpage isn't over optimized? I've come across a site that used to use multiple keywords within their headings & now they are using none. In fact they are marking their company name & logo as an H1 and non keyworded H2's such as our work or Contact. Is anyone holding back on their old SEO tactics to not seem over optimized to Google? Thanks!

Streaming Google Places Reviews
Google no longer lets users pull an iframe of places reviews. I can't find a plugin for wordpress that will do this either. Any suggestions on how to show Google places reviews on your website? Or... should we blow it off and just go with yelp / City Search reviews?
