Creative ways to dramatically increase content on ecommerce category pages?
-
I need to signficantly boost the content on the category pages on my ecommerce website. Currently, they're pretty thin, with some only having approx 50 words of unique content. In the past, I've intentionally kept the content on these pages quite light, to keep the aesthetic a certain way. It's a fashion-based site, so it's very much about the visual.
However, with the introduction of Panda, I need to change this mindset. But, there must be slightly more creative ways to boost the content to stop the pages looking too text heavy. I'm not talking hidden text or anything, but ways to break it up in different blocks on the page to make it look natural/relevant, while keeping it looking great.
Anyone have any good ideas? Or, any links to ecommerce sites that have employed brilliant methods?

Good point, I think I probably need to err on the side of caution and not go overboard, as you say.
Yes, already planning things like product Q&As and reviews to help with the product pages.
Thanks for taking the time to answer.

That's probably fine, but you want to be a little careful about how much content is visible. There are perfectly legitimate, user-focused reason for having content that isn't immediately displayed, but you don't want to go overboard. The primary thing is that if someone looked at the page, they would think the way the content is displayed (or not displayed) on the page looks perfectly natural and good for users, not like you're trying to stick optimized content onto a page without displaying it. I'm suggesting your plan is to hide optimized content. I just think it's important that it be said.
Craig's suggestion of user reviews creating your original content is good if you can get them. It's not always so easy. It can be helpful on product pages. Though, it may not really help with your category pages as reviews are usually on product pages.

Thanks Kurt, appreciate your reply. I will be using both ideas to incorporate as much text content as possible!
For some of the category pages, it won't be possible to do this as the category only contains, say, 9 products. So, for these categories, I was thinking of using a secondary description below the products. Only the first paragraph will be visible, the rest appears on clicking 'read more' (but all content loads at once). Good or bad idea?
Appreciate any comments you may have!

Most ecommerce sites use user reviews to do this.
Encourage your customers to write reviews of the product, or to submit pictures of the product in use with a description of the photo or setting.
That way you'll gain real content from people talking about your product.
You can also engage in some contests to encourage user reviews and that will both help to sell your products and provide additional non-boilerplate content for your ecommerce pages.

I can think of two ways to add content and keep the site very visual:
- Use a content rotator. You can have a single area of the page which cycles through content so it isn't all being displayed at the same time. All the content in the rotator is in the code. With some smart coding, you can even make the content rotator itself very visual while including a decent amount of content.
- Setup popup overlays for the pictures of fashion...uh...stuff (not sure what kind of fashion site you have) and, instead of putting the content for the overlays on a separate URL, write it into the category page itself.

Unsolved Should I combine pages?
Hi, Im not sure of the correct route to take here... We are a training provider and I manage the website. The main course offered is the transport manager CPC. Currently, I have a "catch all" landing page which links to each different course option: Landing page > Classroom Online Self study Distance learning The main keyword revolves around "transport manager cpc" I want searchers to land on the online page is they search "online transport manager CPC" for example but I think its confusing Google. I'm wondering if I should de-index the store pages (although some perform very well) and increase the content on the main landing page to rank for every related keyword on that page. Initially, I wanted to devalue the landing page in favor of the store pages but I'm unsure if that's the right way to go. I've stripped out the bulk of the keywords and content and shifted it to each individual page. but as above, Im now unsure if that's the right route to take. Any help would be greatly appreciated 👍 Thanks

Duplicate content? - Ecommerce reviews loading the same products on every page
Hello there! I use a plugin on my ecom site that shows customer reviews - not product reviews but general shopping experience reviews. The plugin also loads links and short descriptions of products those customers bought. Having installed it site-wide, on every page there are short descriptions of the same products. Of course, as people leave new reviews the content changes (but it doesn't happen very often). So the question is: Is having links and short descriptions of the same products on every page harmful for SEO in this case? I'd be grateful for any insight into this matter.

How can I make sure pages with similar content don't damage the other's SEO?
I work for a travel company and I have a 'tour page' targeted for pre-booking and a 'booking pack page' post-booking page, with some similar content but with details such as hostel locations, meeting places and times etc. I want to make sure the tour page keeps the authority as this is what I want to rank on SEO. I've got a couple of similar problems to this across site, there are a few pages on site that are post-sale and don't really need to rank on Google but it would be great if they could contribute to other pages' rankings. Thanks!

Building a new page: What on-page SEO would you build in?
Hi all, Building a new page for a fairly competitive keyword. Need to make sure the on-page SEO is pretty top notch, because link building (including internal links) will be difficult. I've optimised the meta description, the alt tags and image names, and included the keyword in the Title Tags. Not a great deal I can do with regards to optimising for mobile or considering migrating to the AMP project because this is handled externally. What else would you suggest? Cheers in advance, Rhys

Should extra content be added to item page or resource center?
We run an ecommerce company which sells machines. After the machine is used for X amount of time, we suggest changing the blades in the machines. We have a resource center for customer convenience. We are creating videos and content on how to change the blades in each machine. (each machine is a different process). Do we create videos and content in the resource center and link to the product page or do we beef up our content on the product page by adding that information there? 1 part of us thinks - "The new blade-changing content" is valuable to that product so buyers know the process before buying and hopefully gain some rank juice on the item pages. The other part of us thinks - Keep all resources in the resource center and link to learning resources from the product pages. This version doesn't beef up our product pages but seems to be the logical place to hose the content on the website. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Best category page structure on MY ecommerce site? Advice please
Hi all, I run the site: http://goo.gl/YATL2i I have had this category set up like this for a while now - but wonder if its confusing to google, and potentially my users... let me start by saying my products are available in 3 formats (soon to be 4), so for example i have 3 pages for cctv systems: Analogue / SD cctv systems: http://goo.gl/SPkdYW hd sdi systems: http://goo.gl/uksRAD ip systems: http://goo.gl/UMHBd0 each of the above sub categories then have a further sub category of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 16 camera kit page... I am trying to figure out if it would be better to just have one "cctv systems" page, and use filters in the left menu so users can filter by format, number of cameras etc etc... but these filters would not navigate to other pages but simply limit the view on the one "cctv systems" page. If you think 1 page with filters is best - can you then advise what should i do with all the sub category pages i no longer need? 301 rediret to the main cctv systems page? Basically i currently have my site set up so cctv products are categorised by the format i,e SD, HD-SDI or IP... Which i thought was very important the user doesnt mix formats as it can not work - but am thinking maybe i should catorgorize by type i.e CCTV Camera, CCTV Recorders or CCTV Systems, and then use filters to drill further down in the categories. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. thanks

Long list of companies spread out over several pages - duplicate content?
Hi all, I am currently working with a company formation agent. They have a list of every limited company spread over hundreds of pages. What do you guys think? Is there a need for Canonicals? The website is ranking pretty well but I want to make sure there aren't any problems in the future. Here are two pages as examples: http://www.formationsdirect.com/companysearchlist.aspx?start=MULLAGHBOY+CONSTRUCTION+LIMITED&next=1# http://www.formationsdirect.com/companysearchlist.aspx?start=%40a+company+limited&next=1# Also what about the actual company pages? See an example below http://www.formationsdirect.com/companysearchlist.aspx?name=AMNA+CONSTRUCTION+LTD&number=06630333#.U8PW6_ldX1s Thanks in advance Aaron

Page Title
Hi All, I am wondering if you could help me please. I am getting the following result after I run my On-Page Analysis Avoid Multiple Page Title Elements _Easy fix _ <dl style="font-style: normal;"> <dt>Page titles</dt> <dd>"Aquashowers-Shower Repairs Dublin -" and "Aquashowers - Shower Repairs Dublin"</dd> <dt>Explanation</dt> <dd>Web pages are meant to have a single title, and for both accessibility and search engine optimization reasons, we strongly recommend following this practice.</dd> <dt>Recommendation</dt> <dd>Remove all but a single page title element.</dd> </dl> Does this mean that i have 2 pages that are nearly identical or i should only name a page with one word? The reason i ask is because i have 1 page called "Aquashowers-Shower Repairs Dublin" and another called "Aquashowers-Dublin Shower Repair" I don't have a page called "Aquashowers - Shower Repairs Dublin" (with the space inbetween the words and the hyphen) Any help would be great. Thanks again Aidan
