Dump Penguin Hit Domain
-
Just wanting to get some feedback from others dealing with Penguin hits on client's websites. We've got one particularly client that has been hit badly because of a high proportion of link toxicity. After running the Cemper Detox Tool we found that only about 25 links are healthy. We're actually thinking of dumping the domain and moving the website to a new domain and starting again with link building (manually grabbing as many of the existing healthy links as possible on the way).
Has anyone out there used this strategy? What do you think of the potential of the Sandbox of the new site vs. the Penguin hit on the old site. Do you think the 'drag' of Penguin is higher than the 'drag' of the Sandbox on rankings?
Thanks guys, look forward to your insight!

Hi Linda
Do NOT redirect - If you set up a redirect you will pass the penalty to the new domain and you will have the exact same results. I suggest you clean the profile and once you see your traffic picking up then do 301.
Try to think why you got penalised. Go to webmaster tools and download your latest links - there is a tab and you can select it. Since you were hit with the latest update I would start to check links within the 2 update dates. Disavow those links or try to remove them. I am sure you will pick up.
I can have a look for you if you want should you give me the web site url on a PM.
Best of luck!

Thanks for your responses so far guys. Just to clarify, there has not be a manual penalty, just a hit from the Penguin 2.1 algo update on October 3rd.
My concern is that given that there is not manual penalty, we can't ask for re-consideration and therefore have no idea when the next algo update will happen and if it will fix the problem.
With regard to traffic, they are getting around 500 visitors a month from direct traffic and almost nothing from referrals, however I was thinking that I would just set up an automatic redirect of the domain, or alternatively just set up a simply page telling customers 'we've moved'. The domain would be similar, so brand name recognition would be ok going forward.

I agree with Federico if we are dealing with a "manual penalty" case which seems to be the case since he is mentioning reconsideration requests. You have to remember that there is not a one size fits all solution for penalised domains, each client is a unique case that needs a unique action from your part.
For example:
- Is the cost of your extra hours of work and the time he is going to lose in order to revoke the penalty less thanbuying a domain, uploading the site and rank it again.
2) Is the domain a branded domain? If so you need to try and clean it, if not maybe worth changing it? - Does the client have referral web sites driving good quality traffic to the site? This is extremely important. For example one of my clients who got penalised (manual penalty) was getting 6000 visits a month from a referal web site Google pointed out as against their "quality guidelines". Needless to say I did not disavow the site and carried on cleaning the rest of the domain. Few months later the penalty timed out and client got back all his rankings and traffic, also impressions got increased on google webmaster tools.
Up to date everything seems fine.
- Is the cost of your extra hours of work and the time he is going to lose in order to revoke the penalty less thanbuying a domain, uploading the site and rank it again.

Is the site still getting customers accessing the site directly? As if you established a brand name, that people is used to, I should consider cleaning up the domain instead.
I've done it myself, 95% of the links were toxic according to Link Dtox, we tried disavowing just the worse ones, reconsideration declined, then we disavowed over 1500 domains and left around 50 that were healthy links, reconsideration approved and penalty revoked. The very next day we started seeing 100% increase in search traffic, and although we are not ranking as high as we expected, Google's Matt Cutts told a few days ago that even after a penalty is removed, it may take some time until Google trust the site again.
All the work was done KNOWING that we couldn't just "dump" the domain as we had over 100,000 customers accessing our site directly. And if you change to a new domain and redirect the penalized one, chances are the new domain gets the hit too.
So as a first step, I would ask myself if it is worth the clean, depending on how many direct traffic you have, brand, etc.
Hope that helps!

Do I need to undo a 301 redirect to dissavow links from the source domain?
A client came to me after being hit by Penguin and had already performed a 301 redirect from site A to Site B. Site B was subsequently hit by the penalty a number of weeks later and we are planing on performing link removal for Site A. Only the webmaster tools account for Site B exists, none is still available for site A. I assume that I cannot dissavow links to site A from Site B's webmaster tool account (even though website A's links show up in the GWT account). So do I need to undo the 301 and then create a new GWT account for site A in order to disavow the links pointing to site A, or can I submit from Site B's GWT account since they are 301'd to site B? Thanks! Chris [edited for formatting]

Both domains have same name, different extensión. So the question: Can i link with photo domain A to domain B, if i place nofollow and no ancor text on those linked photos. I want to have my traffic unified and i dont want to go against google guidelines

Removing a sitewide backlink without damaging the domain
Hello, I have a client that partnered up with a person in his field 4 years ago and got him to place a sitewide link to his site, high domain authority. Now with recent developments this site owner wants to take off these links so that they won't leak pagerank. The person insists in taking all the links off with his next website redesign. I have found several years ago in my own SEO efforts that removal of a sitewide link actually damages the domain. Is this still true? Should he ask for a nofollow or will that change damage our domain as well? Is there any way he can not take a huge hit on this? He doesn't mind the loss of links, he just don't want to be damaged. Please only post if you have recent experience with sitewide link removal, or if you have something related or a solution.

competitor sites link to a considerable amount of irrelevant sites/nonsense sites that seem to score high with regard to domain authority
According to my recent SEOmoz links analysis, my competitor sites link to a considerable amount of irrelevant sites/nonsense sites that seem to score high with regard to domain authority... e.g. wedding site linking to a transportation attorney's website. Aother competitor site has an overall of 2 million links, most of which are seemingly questionable index sites or forums to which registration is unattainable. I recently created a 301 redirect, and my external links have yet to be updated to my new domain name in SEOmoz. Yet, by comparing my previous domain authority rank with those of the said competitor sites, the “delta” is relatively marginal. The SEOmoz rank is 21 whereas the SEOmoz ranks of two competitor sites 30 and 33 respectively. The problem is, however, is to secure a good SERP for the most relevant terms with Google… My Google pagerank was “3” prior to the 301 redirect. I worked quite intensively so as to receive a pagerank only to discover that it had no affect at all on the SERP. Therefore, I took a calculated risk in changing to a domain name that translates from non-latin characters, as the site age is marginal, and my educated guess is that the PR should rebound within 4 weeks, however, I would like to know as to whether there is a way to transfer the pagerank to the new domain… Does anyone have any insight as to how to go about and handling this issue?

Please help? unique penguin problem with a blogger template
**Can any one help? The problem: **There is a free blogger template on this site http://btemplates.com/2012/blogger-template-crystalweb/ that has a anchor text link to our site using the keyword "wholesale" in the footer, that is the main course of our site being hit with a penguin penalty.**The story so far:**On the 24th April our website dropped out of the serps for our main keywords, traffic has been down 90% ever since, we are a small family run business that relies on the inter-net and goggle for our site to work. Goggle organic serps is about 30% of our turnover and have already had no choice to let 3 people go, problem now is we are left with Me, my Dad and Mum, Both my Brothers and nephew and my wife and my brothers wife so unless we can turn this around I can see us going bankrupt.**What I have done so far:**After the 24th I have learnt a lot about S.E.O , and managed to remove 99% of all bad/spammy links and have now come to a dead end. I have been promoting what we do as a company and promoting our blog over the last 4 months and also built a great twitter/facebook following with lots of re-tweets and shares which we have made some good sales from. We have re-designed most parts of our website and managed to up the conversion rate by 300% We have worked on all aspects of our website to make sure we have little/no duplicate content , have worked on ways to speed up the site and fixed most dead links/404 problems.<var id="yiv904548185yui-ie-cursor"></var>**Now onto our main problem:**After a few weeks of removing links I found a blogger page that kept coming up with the same link, after some detective work I found the template was originally designed by http://www.deluxetemplates.com/ after a few emails we found out that someone paid deluxetemplates to add the link to the site, I'm guessing it was a S.E.O. company we used for 2 years, but they did not admit to this and could not help. A guy called Klodian from deluxtemplates was really helpful and helped remove from his site, also he agreed to a cost of $250 to remove all the pictures on his server to force the blogger's to update, this is what the template from deluxtemplates now looks like vozconuncion.blogspot.co.uk .Now this was only helping fix this issue a small bit as a different site called btemplates also used the template and added it to there website as a free download and hosted the template pictures on there servers. I have emailed a few times, I have sent them twitter messages and also added messages to lots of there templates on there site in the hope they can help, I have also contacted the owner directly on his goggle+1 page but no reply. This template is being downloaded once or twice a day, with no way to get hold of the blogger's using it. As a last resort I offered the owner $1000 to help me remove the template but still no luck.Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve? we are willing to pay to resolve this and will do what ever needs to be done.Thank-you for taking the time to read.Karl.

Is this Penguin or Manual Penalty?
I have a client that's traffic dropped off on April 10th. They did get a message in GWT on March 21st. The April 10th date leads me to believe that it is a manual penalty and couldn't be penguin since penguin was released on April 24th. I guess either way backlinks need to be cleaned up though.

Google Penguin for non-English queries?
Does anybody know if non-English queries were also 'hit' by the Google Penguin update? All Penguin horror stories out there are from sites focusing on English queries, and in some (Dutch) industries I'm monitoring, some sites with spammy backlink profiles are still ranking.
