Can deceptive ads help sites to rank? Pogosticking effect involved...
-
Hello,
I have a question for you.I have noticed that many music sites that appear in the first top results for keywords our users search for, include all the same ads that deceive people by inviting them to "Download" or get the "Full Album" of what people may be search for.
Look at the following websites that are often displayed at the first spots for keywords like "Christmas Sheet Music" (just an example):
[....]
They all have, most of the times, the same ads. Look at the following screenshots taken from the sites above (the ads are at the top of the page):
http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/storage/google/Shot1.jpg
http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/storage/google/Shot2.jpgThose deceptive ads could engage users more than legitimate websites not showing those ads or not showing ads at all, making Google think that people are more engaged on those website showing those deceptive ads.
If it is quality that Google is looking for, shouldn't they do something to avoid having sites ranking well just because of some deceptive ads that take users into action, but without any useful result?
I am eager to know your ideas on this issue.
Thanks!
Fab.

Ok, I understand what you mean, but I do think that those kind of ads (the ones you can see in the screenshot links I posted above) could let Google think that users are "engaged" inside the website more just because they clicked those ads and didn't get back to Google (pogosticking effect). That would actually affect rankings. Do you see what I mean?
Thank you.

Could visitors engaging the ads help them rank?
In my opinion, yes, maybe.
How might your site benefit from this idea?
A) Those ads are google adsense, so you could sign up for adsense and run those ads too. If they are getting clicked by the huge percentage of people that you suspect then you could make the same money that they are making.
B) You could make a nice portfolio of printable music and offer it for free. Offer it conspicuously at the top of the site, just like those ads. Lots of people would accept your generous offer. That would get your site some great engagement and get lots of people printing sheet music from your website - which might bring people back to make a purchase.
C) You could get really aggressive and offer lots of free music. You could do that in a variety of ways... offer them the first page for free... they could then try playing and see if it is at the right level for them, if it is an arrangement that they like, they can come back and buy the rest. Offer tons of free music for beginners. Offer a different selection of free music each month. Lots of people will come back over and over to see what you have. Some of them will become buyers, all of them can be shown ads.
There are many ways to structure free printables. I have a website that offers lots of free printables (not related to music). Printables had 160,000 visitors last month and 522,000 pageviews (not counting pdf views). I don't sell the products that are given away for free, I make money from the ads. The income was more than a lot of retail sites make. Free printables can be a great business model.

Those ads are generated by Google AdSense to target the user - you. Google keeps track of your search history and pages you've visited to generate relevant ads to increase clicks and sales for the companies paying for those ads.
So in short, the ads have nothing to do with the sites rankings. The fact that they are the same is explained by them being AdSense ads.

At a bit of a loss as to poor rankings
I have a site in the UK, with these metrics: 15 years old 500 pages in sitemap, but Majestic says 186,000 indexed URLs ? DA of 45, PR of 3 1000 links from 200 linking root domains, across from 150 IP's (from OSE) 33,000 links in OSE when I use the compare tool and look at the "links to this root domain" section 24,000 external links according to Majestic 350 shares, 2,000 tweets, 60 +1's Median PA of linking root domains (from OSE export) = 20 no Moz on-page errors, or webmaster tools issues The above metrics are better than 2 competitors who have only just launched, have fewer links, lower DA, etc, and are ranking for keywords like "wedding entertainment", "corporate entertainers" Our site is www.superted.com Why doesn't OSE show 33,000 links when I select "links to this root domain". Why will those links only be shown when I do a domain comparison in OSE? I'm thinking our anchor text distribution is the problem. We have very few links containing the keywords want. Also maybe our sitemap is an issue as it only lists 500 of our pages? But given our domain age, DA, etc... surely anchor text / site map isn't the only issue here? Any hints would be awesome.

SEO ranking question
Hey, If a site for had a series of articles, and had the privilege of guest posting on several sites, such as mashable, entrepreuner.com, inc.com, and a few other not as big sites. and let us also say that this site is new and currently has pagerank of 0. How would the above benefit the site and the visibility of the articles on google? Also, with guest-posting, is it problematic to have the exact article also on your site? thanks in advance!

Spam affiliate outranking quality site?
I purchased a site hotkeyit.com which was making decent revenue without much work (all via PPC or CPM) but then afterwards started looking at the SERPs and realized I was being outranked for the main term, 'starcraft 2 guide/s' by crappy ClickBank sites like starcraft2guide.com and many others. Researching starcraft2guide.com specifically in SEOMoz/Rush/Majestic shows hotkeyit.com as being quite superior in everyway, not to mention it has quite a social following for a small gaming site, yet Google seems to care not. Can someone please explain what's going on here? It seems like the site was penalized, but there was never any link building done for it aside from word of mouth on forums (this was mentioned beforehand). Thank you everyone.

Keyword Search - another site bypassed me and they are not ranked well...
I was trying to optimize the keywords "music for kids" . This is a no brainer because my URL is "musicforkids" My On-Page Report Card for "music for kids" gives my site a "A". The on page report card for the other site gets an "F". But the other site comes up number ONE in the organic Google search and my site comes up number three. The two sites above me receive a crappy on page Keyword report for the key words "music for kids" but they still come up above me for that search term. What's the deal?

Free SEO tools appearing in SERPS for a site
Hi there, I've just taken over a site and it doesn't have a huge amount of shelfspace on the SERPs for it's brand name. Looking at the results that are there are a lot of free SEO tools that are coming up. They haven't had an SEO before so it's not coming from their side. There's such a lot of them I was wondering if anyone had come across this before - is it simply a competitor looking at the seo, could it be one of the seo analytics packages using free sites or is there anything else to be aware of. I can start knocking the sites down the SERPs but just wondering if anyone has a good solution for this. thanks Shiv

Image only site on top of Google
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to rank in Google for 'Hid xenon' in the netherlands, but there is one site above all results: http://bit.ly/qlsjne As you can see the site almost has no backlinks, and has not a single word in it's content, all images. it's a keyword only domain, and that's probably the only reason why it's ranking that high, but that means then that i can never get higher then him in Google because of it's domainname? Even when it's such a shitty site? Thank you, regards yannick
