the term is used as the name of the page in the URL.
Can you please show where that is occurring? The full URL to the page is "http://theboardgamers.co.uk/". In Google.co.uk you rank #1 for the term "the board gamers". You should recognize "board games" is a different keyword.
the H1 tag at the top of the page is an exact match
I believe you are mistaken. You are using an image in a H1 tag. Please refer to this Q&A: http://www.seomoz.org/q/would-you-use-images-inside-h1-tags. Even if Google was to consider your ALT tag as the H1 text, it would not be an exact match. An "exact match" is exactly as it sounds, a perfect text match. Any changes, includes the change of tense, plurality, spaces, etc. would affect the search results.
Any advice on this one? As an eCommerce homepage I obviously can't go writing paragraphs full of information about board games. The people visiting aren't looking/needing that (on my site).
There is a variety of methods to improve your relevancy in this area. Just a few to consider:
-
you have a rotating banner at the top of the page. You could replace it with a banner that is helpful to your users and search rankings. One possibility would be a background with the following HTML text "All your favorite board games in one place! The Board Gamers"
-
your image names and alt tags should probably be reviewed
-
you can focus your home page on your brand, "TheBoardGamers" and provide a "Board Games" page
-
You can offer a short snippet of text describing your site
I clearly need to add a block of text/content somewhere but I find it hard to think what to write without doing it for the sake of getting keywords in there.
It is great you are including your users in the thought process. They should be first and foremost in your mind.

Hi Rhys,
What is the URL of the page you are trying to rank for the term? I could not locate any page on your site optimized to rank for the term "Board games".
I will guess you are trying to rank your home page for the term since it's title is "Board Games | The Board Gamers". First let's take a look at the wiki page which ranks #1 for "board game" and #2 for "board games": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Board_game
This page ranks #1 for the term "board game" and is very well optimized for the term. Specifically:
-
the term is used as the name of the page in the URL
-
the H1 tag at the top of the page is an exact match
-
The very first words of the first sentence on the page are "A board game is..."
-
The term "board game" is used 58 times on the page. To be clear, I am not referring to keyword density, but rather keyword focus. The page is clearly focused on discussing this topic. The use of the term is natural and not stuffed in any way.
Now let's look at your page.....
-
the term is used ONCE on the page, at the bottom of the left sidebar which is not even above the fold. It is part of a community poll asking people if they play board games.
-
the term is used in your title tag
Why would you feel your page should rank for the term? How are you establishing any relevancy? Answer that question and you will begin to help improve your rankings.

Removing the Trailing Slash in Magento
Hi guys, We have noticed trailing slash vs non-trailing slash duplication on one of our sites. Example:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | brandonegroup
Duplicate: https://www.example.com.au/living/
Preferred: https://www.example.com.au/living So, SEO-wise, we suggested placing a canonical tag on all trailing slash pointing to non-trailing slash. However, devs have advised against removing the trailing slash from some URLs with a blanket rule, as this may break functionality in Magento that depends on the trailing slash. The full site would need to be tested after implementing a blanket rewrite rule. Is any other way to address this trailing slash duplication issue without breaking anything in Magento? Keen to hear from you guys. Cheers,0 -
Potential downside of removing past years' calendar events
hi there. my website is for a school. We have several calendars for athletic events, school events, etc. there are thousands of events each year that link to pages for each event. the URLs/pages are generated dynamically, and the urls and pages are very similar from year to year, so we're being penalized for duplicate content. I can delete past years events in bulk, but there's no way to redirect them in bulk. am i taking a big chance by deleting events that occurred prior to 1/1/2019?

First attempt at manual penalty removal fails - all example links provided by Google not in Majestic, GWT, Ahrefs, LinkDetox, or OSE.
Hello all, I am trying to recover a site from a manual penalty. I already submitted once. Here's what we did. We took the link profile from webmaster tools, majestic seo, ahrefs, link detox, and ose. We manually looked at every link to exclude good links. Then used a tool to run the removal campaign. Submitted a disavow file and reconsideration request. Google came back with a denial. When I looked at the three example links that Google provided, they were definitely spammy (forum profile and comment spam). But none of them were in any of the original csv downloads from GWT, Ahrefs, Majestic, OSE, or LinkDetox. What can I do? Thanks in advance for any help.

Does Google throttle back the search performance of a penalised website/page after the penalty has been removed?
Hi Mozzers. Back in 2013 my website www.octopus-hr.co.uk was hit by a Penguin 2.0 penalty owing to a harmful backlink profile built by a dodgy SEO consultant (now fired). The penalty seemed to apply to the homepage of the site but other pages were unaffected. We got what links we could removed, disavowed the rest and were informed in September 2013 that the penalty had been removed and our re-inclusion request had been successful. However our website homepage still ranks poorly for the search terms we're targeting in the UK: "HR Software" "HR Systems" On page factors are in my opinion pretty well optimised for these search terms. In terms of link building post penalty we've focused on high authority and relevant sites. I believe that compared to most of our search competitors the back link profile to our homepage is in pretty good shape, however it still ranks badly. Has anyone had any experience of a penalty hangover from Google in the past? Are there other things I should consider? Thanks David

How long should you wait between submitting link removal requests?
I'm in the process of trying to clear up a spammy link profile for a site I'm working on. I'm using the excellent data from MOZ and the list of links from Google Webmaster Tools to come up with a list of sites and Remove'em to manage the process and before I go to Google I want to make sure the file I am going to submit for the disavow process is as strong as possible. I am aware that I need to contact webmasters about three times to do the removal request properly. How long between requests should there be and how long should I wait between submitting a final removal request and submitting the file to the disavow tool? Any advice welcome. Thanks.

Any SEO Penalties from Removing RSS Feed?
Hi, I have a site that has a Feedburner feed that has been in place for 5+ years. I am considering getting rid of the feed or starting a new one to combat content scraping. Google continues to rank thieves' sites ahead of mine. Google and Bing have no issue and always get it right. I use Wordpress and have the plugin PubSubHubb, but that is no guarantee. Nonetheless, there is no monetary value of my subscribers whereas the content not being accredited to me takes money out of my pocket as my model is advertising. Is there any SEO issue if I do any of the following: Delete the feed and not have one? Change the feed address and drop all subscribers? Attachments: DMCA Dashboard; example of being outranked by scrapers. My site: www.furniturefashion.com Thanks for your time and hopefully I did not vent too much. OWmou6k f6W3xkq.png

Fastest Way To Remove Footer Link? (post-Panda)
Hello, I have a website with 1k+ links pointed directly to an inner page and home page from blogspot domains. There are 3 links in the footer that points to different locations. 1st anchor text points to the person who designed the page template and links to their website (this doesn't affect us) 2nd anchor text uses a direct keyword that I am trying to rank for and links to the inner page. 3rd anchor text uses my website name and links to the home page I know that these are not good links and the content inside the pages are irrelevant to my own website. The links are embedded into the template on the footer and is site wide.I have already contacted the designer and have the links removed but those that have downloaded the templates still have the footer link. What would be the best way to remove all these footer links? Trying to contact each individual person who is using the template is not working out as most have not responded and some of the websites have not seen an update in years! Any thoughts? If you need additional information feel free to send me a direct message so I can send you an exact link.

Is 404'ing a page enough to remove it from Google's index?
We set some pages to 404 status about 7 months ago, but they are still showing in Google's index (as 404's). Is there anything else I need to do to remove these?
