Tracking External Followed Inbound Links - Are We Getting Fooled?
-
This question is not about how to use SEOMOZ Link tools. It's about the numbers themselves and how their fluctuations are causing confidence issues....
My client wants to track inbound followed links over time. But as I understand it, this number will vary depending on the Linkscape crawling success (or even outages or partial crawls.) In the past few reports, we've had wild fluctuations which have made them very nervous.
If my client wants to track inbound followed links over time, what SEOMOZ metric should we use for the most reliable progress checks?

Most SEOs don't count raw links, exactly because the numbers vary wildly no matter what index you use, and also because most of the Internet is made up of "junk" links that disappear off the link graph every few months.
It's estimated that 60% of the web disappears every year. The reason for this is that much of the web is auto-generated by bots, auto-blogs, low quality aggregators and just plain spam. You often don't see many of these links because the search engines tend to filter them out indexes like Mozscape tend to ignore them as they don't influence rankings.
That said, low quality and transient links do make their way into the various indexes, including Google's. They don't count much for rankings or traffic, and they are as likely to disappear as they are to appear.
Even if the numbers were to stabilize, raw link counts tell you nothing about the value of the links. One good link can outweigh 10,000 no value links. And 100 bad links can actually hurt you.
For this reason, it's usually better to use metrics link DomainAuthority and MozTrust to gauge link building success, as well as gains in traffic and rankings.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

This is a B2B client, selling services in the $20M US range. SEO attribution can be a challenge because of the way due diligence gets conducted.
In addition to traffic, we measure several stages of the conversion funnel and do lead scoring attribution on the CRM. But, in progress meetings, I need to discuss results of SEO groundwork between observable events such as ranking changes (they are top 5 in hyper competitive phrases with some powerful uncumbants.)
Inbound followed links seemed to be one good metric to report on. I was using Linkscape for this but may need to change my approach.

I realise that this isn't quite the answer you were looking for, but perhaps trying to explain to the client that the number of inbound links isn't the best way to keep track of what you're doing? I know that personally I used to keep track of all the links I was building but after a while I realised it was a bit pointless, the only things that I really care about are conversions (and money coming in), and then traffic and number of terms driving that traffic (I try and keep things simple).
Might make your life a bit easier if you're not reliant on a third party number to keep him happy and you can show the end result of all your work is conversions, traffic, rankings etc?
Otherwise as mentioned above, I'd take a look at Majestic to show the numbers going up.

Yes thanks. The issue is not the functionality of reporting but the numbers themselves. +/- 2000 link variations between weekly runs is not okay and freaks out my clients. I'm sure we have not had that much change in link numbers.
I do think I need a 2nd tool to cross reference to. Majestic is a good one to consider.
Please, everyone keep ideas coming.

Hmm... I think you can have an inbound link report run at certain intervals and emailed out. Then you can do a comparison over time. You might also look into something like MajesticSEO which has a historic backlink tool. Very helpful and very credible.

Disavowing links and disavow tool
Hello, I have had a look on webmaster tools and Moz and can see lots of bad links on Moz only. I am thinking whether to disavow them and was wondering if you could you let me know if it is possible to have a look at your current disavow file? I do not currently know what links were included the previous time. Is there a way to check if there are any links in the file at all? I thought I would raise this question as there is a lot of negative info about the disavow tool.

Why did my DA and Links go down?
How could I begin to research this to find out why we have less total links and a lower domain authority. Our DA has gone down two points and our total links dropped by a few thousand. I'd like to find out why that happened but I'm just not sure where to start. Thanks!

SEOMoz Link Analysis Not Updating?
Hi there, I am wondering why the Link Analysis in SEOMoz takes so long to recognise new back-links. I have had the same figures showing for months when I know that I have added a lot more backlinks that are showing in my Google WebMaster account and I have also proven exist by searching directly in Google's search engine. How often does the Link Analysis section update itself? Are these figures worth following at all or are they useless? Thanks!

Link Diagnosis and Open Site Explorer
I work at a web design firm that's starting to offer SEO to its clients. They want to keep costs down until the SEO side becomes more established, so I've been using mostly free tools to do the SEO. I've been using a website called LinkDiagnosis.com to check backlinks for clients. It says the data is provided by SEOmoz, so I thought it must be pretty reliable. However, I just signed up for the PRO trial to test out all of SEOmoz's tools (& hopefully convince my company to sign us up), and I find that the link information between the 2 tools can be vastly different! Sometimes the number of unique linking domains is very close, but other times it can be off by hundreds, even thousands, with Open Site Explorer typically providing the higher numbers. Is the Link Diagnosis tool really powered with data from SEOmoz, or does it just receive a portion of the data, since it's a free tool? I'm just trying to figure out what will be the most reliable solution for me to keep using, and the discrepancies between the two tools has caused me to question the reliability of both. Thanks, Hector

Can I get a list of all links on a given domain?
Sorry, this is actually kind of a tripartite question: I was looking at the Competitive Link Analysis on one my clients' campaigns. Sometime between June and September their total links went up by about 120,000. We have no idea where those links came from (although the numbers would indicate that they're mostly internal). Question 1: In none of the other tools can I figure out how to list these links on a domain level. Is there a way to get a list of all links for our given domain? I've been playing around with the page-by-page and even that doesn't show me everything. For example, I'm looking at OSE for their homepage and it lists 45 links for a page that it claims has 151 total. Question 2: How did it pick those 45 to display out of the 151 possible? If these are only external links, why do half of them come from one of our subdomains? Also... Question 3: If our client hasn't made any major changes recently, why has the number of internal links gone up so dramatically? Thanks.

Does OSE Anchor Text Distribution CSV include internal links or external only?
Quite often when I'm using OSE and perform a CSV export, it looks like the total inbound link count and many phrases come from internal links for the domain in question. I haven't had the time to try and figure this out and don't know exactly how to go about figuring it out. So the initial question is does OSE's anchor text distribution CSV include internal links or are they external only? And alternately, how do I test for this? I deal with sites that have tens or hundreds of thousands of pages and hundreds of thousands or millions of links...
