Seomoz.org Category and Tags practice
-
Hello,
I have been checking seomoz sourcecode and architecture these days in order to learn and to apply it in my site but I havent managed to find "tags" at all. Just the "Posts by Categories" on the right sidebar. Is this the only way you are categorising content?
In this case, the only way spiders have to find your content is via these category archive pages and the general sitemap?
Thanks!

Thanks for the complete answer!
I also have an old site with around 1000 posts and also around 4000 products and just use categories. It is quite difficult to arrange everything and I was wondering how do you do it.
In fact you just have categories in sidebar and then "sections" in the main menu so user can nav in your site.
As I see it, the important thing is usability and easing the navigation. "urls" dont mind so much.
Thanks again

Hi Antonio,
You're correct - we don't currently use tag pages. We rely on our site map, category archive pages, and inbound links to surface up content, and this is working pretty well for us (in part because we have such an active community who share and tweet and post about our content, so we have a solid external link foundation).
With as much content as we have, I would be hesitant to add tags as an added layer of complexity, as it would be difficult to scale. For one thing, these pages wouldn't have any unique content, which is already a problem with our category pages. For another, we already have some categories that don't get posted in too regularly - adding tag pages would increase the number of pages in the /blog folder that have no unique content and don't get updated regularly. Finally, our users seem to be able to drill down into our content as needed just fine, so there's no added user benefit.
Our site is a big, old site and has a lot of the same problems a big, old site has. I wouldn't necessarily use us as the example of what to do or not do on your own site. If you feel that tag pages would add a user benefit to your blog, I say go for it - but in my opinion, they're often unnecessary.

Schema Markup for eCommerce Category Pages?
My research indicates that applying an ItemList schema markup to our category pages is likely the best way to go. However, I've also ready that Google discourages schema markup on category pages. I'm just wondering if any of you have applied schema markup to your category pages and, if so, how did you do it? John,

Nofollow Meta Tag
Hello, I'm new to this forum so please forgive if this has been discussed before. I have a question about the nofollow meta tag being used at the page level. We have external links within our website's guest blog pages that we do not want followed. I would use a nofollow rel attribute on the link itself, but since we allow the blog to be posted using a wysiwyg-type text editor, that proves to be a little difficult to enforce. I was thinking about using the nofollow meta tag at the page level to handle this, but was a little unsure on how that may affect our own links...such as menu and side-bar links...that are on those pages. I'm not too concerned about those internal links not being followed on those particular blog pages, but I wanted to make sure a nofollow for a link on one page won't have any negative side effects on those same menu links that appear on various other pages without the nofollow meta tag. Would there be any negative side effects to using the nofollow meta tag like that? Thanks in advance for any insight. Best Regards, Ken

H1 tag positioning impact
Hello, I am currently working with a dev team to develop a new site. We have designed the title tags to sit below a banner image on each page but the technical team are insisting the h1 title tags must come above the banner for maximum SEO impact. I am sceptical about this, can anybody please shed some light and/or share any up to date resource on this? I have attached a side by side wireframe to illustrate the pages with the h1 tags in both positions. Thank you! HnWcLTx

Duplicate Content on Category Pages
Hi Everyone, I have a few category pages within a category for my eCommerce store and I've recently started writing a short description for each. However a lot of these paragraphs can be replicated for the same category. For instance '1 Inch thickness' I'll show all the information, and it'll be very similar to '2 inch thickness' but obviously one is 1 inch and one is 2 inch so I would only be changing one keyword and that is the thickness. I feel that this is helping customers because it has all the information in each category e.g. how to filter your choices. But it might be duplicate content. What would you recommend?

Canonical Tag for Ecommerce Site
My client has an ecommerce site with over 1,000 products. We have a ton of duplicates because of how their ecommerce system handles product pages. Each time a new product is added, there is a default product page created (/product/12345-product-name.aspx). Each time that product is added to a specific product category, another, separate URL is created (/product/office-chairs/12345-product-name.aspx). The site has over 1,000 duplicates (at least one for each product) because of how the ecommerce system structures URLs. We are unable to have unique content on /products/12345-product-name.aspx and /product/office-chairs/12345-product-name.aspx because both pages pull from the same database. Their webteam informed me that they can't implement canonical tags on individual pages, they must be dynamically added to the site all at once. Thus forcing me to choose all of the default product pages as primary URLs. Both types of URLs are getting indexed and the product URLs that were added to the categories are SEO friendly so I'm leary to eliminate one or the other with a canonical tag or a no index. Suggestions?

Using commas in the title tag?
Is there a disadvantage/advantage to using commas to separate words in the title tag. Which will be more effective as a title tag: "keyword1 keyword2 - Brand" OR "keyword1, keyword2 - Brand"?
